Filipino orthography

Filipino orthography (Filipino: Ortograpiyang Filipino, Palatitikang Filipino) specifies the correct use of the writing system of the Filipino language, the national and co-official language of the Philippines.

In 2013, the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino released the Ortograpiyang Pambansa (“National Orthography”), a new set of guidelines for writing the Filipino language.

The modern Filipino alphabet introduced since 1987 consists of 28 letters (20 if you only count native letters).

After a consonant, it is written as a hyphen:

At the end of a word, it is indicated with a grave accent mark ⟨`⟩:

Final stress is indicated with an acute accent mark ⟨´⟩:

(The acute accent mark is also used in foreign loan words, particularly Spanish)
