Fostex is a Japanese manufacturer of professional and consumer audio equipment, specializing in speakers, headphones, studio monitors, and recording devices, founded in 1973 as a brand and subsidiary of Foster Electric Company, Ltd.[1][2][3]
Established to market high-quality speaker components and acoustic products directly to consumers and professionals, Fostex initially focused on the Japanese market before expanding internationally in the late 1970s with professional-grade speaker units and multitrack recording technology.[4][5] The company gained prominence in the 1980s for innovations like the B-16, the first 16-track recorder using 1/2-inch tape, which democratized multitrack recording for musicians and studios at an accessible price point of around $4,000.[6]
Today, Fostex continues to blend advanced engineering with craftsmanship, producing products that cater to audio engineers, musicians, and hi-fi enthusiasts worldwide, including semi-open headphones such as the T50RP series and nearfield studio monitors like the NF-1A.[1][7] Its parent company, Foster Electric—founded in 1949 by S. Nishimura and H. Shinohara—remains a global leader in OEM transducers and employs 15,606 people across multiple countries (as of March 2025), supporting Fostex's commitment to innovative sound reproduction.[8][9][10] In 2023, Fostex marked its 50th anniversary, underscoring its enduring role in the audio industry through ongoing development of electronic devices and acoustic solutions.[1]
