Upbringing and family
Gajala, born Gazala Shaikh Khan on May 19, 1985, in Mumbai, India, was raised in a Muslim family.[9][1] She spent much of her childhood in Kuwait and Oman (Muscat), where her family lived prior to her entry into the film industry.[10][11] In her teens, around the time she was preparing for a career in entertainment, Gajala relocated back to Mumbai, India.[12] This upbringing provided her with early exposures to international environments, and upon returning to India, she briefly pursued modeling as a pathway toward acting.[2]Education and early career aspirations
After returning to India, she continued her higher secondary education in Mumbai, attending Vidhyanidhi School in Juhu.[11] During her college years at the University of Mumbai, Gajala developed an interest in fashion and media, briefly pursuing studies in a related field before shifting focus to the entertainment industry.[9] In the late 1990s, she entered the modeling world in Mumbai, participating in print advertisements and ramp walks, which provided her initial exposure to the industry and paved the way for her acting pursuits.[13] Gajala's early career aspirations centered on acting, driven by her enjoyment of cinema, particularly in South Indian films; she attended initial auditions, experiencing some rejections before securing her debut opportunity.[6]Professional career
Debut and initial roles
Gajala entered the film industry with her debut in the 2001 Telugu romantic drama Naalo Unna Prema, directed by V. R. Pratap and produced under Sri Sairam Productions, where she played the role of Raaji opposite Jagapati Babu and Laya.[14] The film, a remake of the 1999 Kannada movie Chandramukhi Pranasakhi, marked her initial foray into acting after a brief stint in modeling that provided visibility in South Indian entertainment circles.[15] However, the movie received lukewarm response at the box office and was considered a commercial failure, limiting opportunities for the newcomer.[16] Following the underwhelming debut, Gajala changed her screen name from Raaji to Gajala and appeared in her second Telugu project, Student No: 1 (2001), directed by S. S. Rajamouli, portraying the female lead Anjali opposite N. T. Rama Rao Jr.[17] This action drama, which explored themes of justice and redemption in a law college setting, proved to be a breakthrough for her, earning positive acclaim for her fresh screen presence and contributing to the film's success as a hit among youth audiences.[16] The name change was seen as auspicious, propelling her into more prominent roles alongside rising stars in Telugu cinema.[16] In 2002, Gajala took on supporting roles in several Telugu films, including Allari Ramudu, where she essayed Rukmini, the niece of the protagonist played by N. T. Rama Rao Jr., in a comedy-drama directed by B. Gopal that blended romance and family conflicts.[18] Her performances in these early projects drew mixed reviews, with critics noting her appealing looks and poise but critiquing her limited acting range as a newcomer navigating a competitive, male-dominated industry.[6] These roles helped establish her as a versatile supporting actress capable of multi-heroine dynamics. Gajala expanded to Tamil cinema the same year with Ezhumalai (2002), her debut in the industry, directed by and starring Arjun as the titular character, where she played Anjali Nagalingam in this action-drama centered on family vengeance and romance.[19] The quick transition to Tamil films was facilitated by her growing recognition from Telugu projects and prior modeling exposure, allowing her to secure opportunities in regional cinema despite initial challenges in adapting to new linguistic and cultural nuances.[6] Overall, her initial phase from 2001 to 2003 highlighted perseverance amid modest starts, setting the stage for more substantial parts later.Breakthrough films and peak popularity
Gajala achieved her breakthrough in 2005 with the Tamil mystery thriller Raam, directed by Ameer, where she portrayed the female lead Karthikaayini opposite Jiiva. The film, which explored themes of false accusation and community dynamics, offered her significant screen time and opportunities to deliver a nuanced performance as the daughter of a police sub-inspector. In a 2014 interview, Gajala highlighted Raam as a standout project, noting, "I really liked the movie 'Raam' that I did few years ago. There was immense opportunity to act in it."[6] The success of Raam marked the beginning of Gajala's peak popularity in the mid-2000s, particularly in Tamil cinema, where she transitioned to more prominent lead and supporting roles that emphasized emotional depth over glamour. In 2006, she appeared in Em Magan, a family drama directed by Thirumurugan, playing Dhivya, the college friend of the protagonist (Bharath), in a story centered on generational conflicts and filial bonds. The film was praised for its heartfelt storytelling and ensemble performances, contributing to its positive reception among audiences. That year, Gajala also starred in Madrasi, an action drama written and directed by Arjun Sarja, where she shared the screen with the veteran actor and debutante Vedhika in a narrative about revenge and family honor. Her role in the film further showcased her versatility in intense, character-driven stories. Gajala's fan base expanded notably in Tamil and Telugu regions during this period, driven by her collaborations with established stars such as Jiiva in Raam and Arjun Sarja in Madrasi. This surge in visibility marked a shift from her earlier supporting roles to more central characters, with her on-screen chemistry and expressive dance sequences in song sequences earning appreciation from critics and viewers alike. Her work during this phase solidified her reputation for choosing roles with substance, prioritizing acting challenges over commercial formulas.[6]Later projects and career hiatus
Following her breakthrough in the mid-2000s, Gajala's roles became more selective and infrequent, reflecting a gradual shift in her career trajectory. In 2007, she ventured into Malayalam cinema with her debut film The Speed Track, portraying Gouri opposite Mammootty in a sports drama centered on racing and family dynamics. This marked her expansion beyond Telugu and Tamil industries, though the film received mixed reviews for its pacing despite strong performances. The same year, she appeared in the Telugu action film Vijetha, playing a supporting role in a story of rural vengeance and heroism. By 2008, Gajala took on multiple projects across languages, including the Tamil films Durai, where she essayed a key character in a rural drama about family honor, and Raman Thediya Seethai, a romantic ensemble that explored urban relationships and earned appreciation for its ensemble cast. In Telugu, she featured in Bhadradri, a thriller involving temple mysteries and suspense, but these roles were smaller compared to her earlier leads. Her final pre-hiatus film was the 2011 Telugu comedy Money Money More Money, a sequel where she played Trisha, a salesgirl in a lighthearted tale of greed and mishaps. These sparse appearances highlighted a slowdown, with fewer lead opportunities as the industry increasingly favored emerging talents like Kajal Aggarwal and Tamannaah Bhatia in commercial cinema.[6] Gajala's career entered a prolonged hiatus after 2011, lasting over a decade, primarily due to personal priorities. She cited the need for a break after starting young and working continuously for ten years, opting instead to focus on family time and personal growth by completing a course in interior designing.[6] In a 2014 interview, she expressed viewing acting as a hobby rather than a lifelong career, preferring meaningful roles upon any return, though no projects materialized immediately despite announced comeback plans.[6] This period effectively positioned her as semi-retired from mainstream acting, with no major film commitments until 2024. During her hiatus, Gajala engaged in occasional non-acting pursuits, including leveraging her interior designing skills for personal and select professional endeavors, though details remain limited.[6] She made a notable return in 2024 with the Hindi thriller Tariq, directed by Arun Gopalan, where she appeared in a supporting role alongside John Abraham in a story inspired by real events involving patriotism and intrigue; the film released on October 29, 2024, to moderate reception.[20] As of 2025, this marks her re-entry into cinema after the extended break, though she has not announced further projects, maintaining a low public profile focused on selective opportunities.Personal life
Marriage and family
Gajala married television actor and photographer Faisal Raza Khan on February 24, 2016, in a private ceremony held in Mumbai.[21] The event featured a simple white and gold theme and was kept low-key, attended only by close family members and a select group of friends from the entertainment industry.[21] The couple had been long-term partners, having met through their shared connections in the film and television circles several years prior to their wedding.[22] Their relationship, which spanned nearly a decade by the time of their fifth anniversary in 2021, emphasized mutual support in their professional lives.[22] Since their marriage, Gajala and Faisal have maintained a focus on privacy, residing primarily in Mumbai while occasionally traveling together, such as trips with close friends to destinations like the Maldives.[22] As of 2021, the couple had no children and led a relatively secluded lifestyle away from media attention, with Faisal pursuing opportunities in television and photography.[22] This union aligned with Gajala's decision to take a hiatus from her acting career, allowing her to prioritize personal life.[21]Health challenges and public incidents
In July 2002, Gajala, then an upcoming actress in the Telugu film industry, attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills at a guest house in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.[23] She was found unconscious by a friend and actor Arjun, with whom she was shooting, and was rushed to the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, where she was declared out of danger following prompt medical intervention.[24] The incident stemmed from severe depression triggered by loneliness and the pressures of her early career in the film industry.[23] The event garnered significant media attention in Hyderabad, with reports highlighting the vulnerabilities faced by young actors in Tollywood, including a police case of attempted suicide that was later contextualized by industry insiders as a response to emotional distress rather than criminal intent.[25] Gajala later attributed the attempt to profound feelings of isolation, stating in reflections on her experiences that the demanding nature of the industry exacerbated her sense of disconnection.[23] Following her recovery, she underwent a period of rest and support from close associates, emphasizing a gradual return to stability without public disclosure of formal counseling at the time. The 2002 incident contributed to broader discussions on mental health challenges within the South Indian film industry, underscoring the toll of rapid fame and personal isolation on performers.[23] It influenced Gajala's career trajectory, leading her to prioritize personal well-being and family time during a subsequent hiatus, where she focused on resilience and maintained a low public profile to safeguard her privacy.Filmography
