GoTo Meeting is currently owned and operated by GoTo Technologies USA, Inc., a SaaS company specializing in unified communications and IT management solutions, which rebranded from LogMeIn Inc. in February 2022 to streamline its product offerings and emphasize ease of use in remote work environments.[7] This rebranding positioned GoTo Meeting as a core component of the broader GoTo suite, integrating it with tools for enhanced collaboration across business functions.[5] As of November 2025, GoTo Meeting remains an active SaaS product tailored for hybrid work, boasting 99.999% uptime to ensure reliable virtual meetings for global teams.[8] It holds HIPAA compliance, enabling secure use in healthcare settings through features like end-to-end encryption and business associate agreements, while supporting adaptations such as AI-enhanced transcriptions and mobile accessibility for distributed workforces.[9] The platform facilitates over 80 million annual meetings, underscoring its ongoing relevance in professional communication.[10] Recent developments include the discontinuation of standalone GoTo Meeting apps for iOS and Android on January 1, 2023, with users directed to the unified GoTo mobile app for continued access to meetings, calls, and messaging.[11] In August 2025, the smart notes feature was deprecated, shifting focus to manual note-taking and other productivity tools within the platform.[12] These changes align with GoTo's strategy to consolidate functionalities, including seamless integrations with GoTo Connect for voice and messaging services, and GoTo Webinar for scaling to larger events.[13]History
Founding and Early Development
GoTo Meeting originated from the efforts of ExpertCity, a company founded in 1997 that specialized in remote access technologies, including the initial GoToMyPC product for secure desktop broadcasting. In February 2004, Citrix Systems acquired ExpertCity for $225 million, integrating it as the Citrix Online division to expand its portfolio in web-based collaboration tools.[14][15] Shortly thereafter, in July 2004, GoTo Meeting was launched as a desktop broadcasting tool designed for remote access and online meetings, leveraging ExpertCity's existing screen sharing and remote control technology from GoToMyPC and GoToAssist.[16] The service emphasized ease of setup, allowing users to join meetings quickly without complex firewall configurations, as it operated over standard HTTP/HTTPS ports to penetrate corporate networks seamlessly.[17] Early development focused on core features that addressed business needs for simple, reliable collaboration. GoTo Meeting introduced integrated screen sharing, enabling presenters to broadcast their desktop to attendees in real time, alongside VoIP audio for integrated voice communication without requiring separate phone lines.[18] This combination facilitated remote demonstrations, training sessions, and team discussions, quickly gaining traction among small to medium-sized businesses for its low barrier to entry and minimal download requirements. Early expansions included increased support for attendees per meeting, driving rapid adoption as organizations sought cost-effective alternatives to traditional video conferencing hardware. The platform's growth accelerated with the launch of complementary products under the GoTo brand. In June 2006, GoTo Webinar was introduced, extending capabilities to larger audiences of up to 1,000 participants for marketing and educational webinars, building on GoTo Meeting's foundational technology. This was followed by GoTo Training in 2010, which added interactive e-learning tools like polls, quizzes, and breakout sessions for virtual instructor-led training.[19] These expansions solidified GoTo Meeting's role in the collaborative software ecosystem, with the broader GoTo portfolio achieving significant market penetration by emphasizing firewall-friendly deployment and one-click access. Key pre-2016 innovations included evolving from basic remote control to more interactive collaborative features, such as multi-user annotations on shared screens, enhancing group productivity.[20] By the mid-2010s, the GoTo business had built substantial value through consistent revenue growth and customer loyalty, culminating in Citrix's announcement in late 2015 to spin it off as a standalone entity valued at approximately $4 billion.[21] This reflected the division's transformation into a leader in online meetings, setting the stage for further evolution, including its eventual acquisition by LogMeIn in 2016.[20]Acquisitions and Rebranding
In 2016, Citrix announced its intent to merge its GoTo business unit, which included GoTo Meeting, with LogMeIn in an all-stock reverse Morris Trust transaction valued at approximately $1.8 billion.[22] The deal was structured to allow Citrix shareholders to receive about 50.5% ownership in the combined company, positioning LogMeIn to expand its portfolio in remote access and collaboration tools.[23] The merger closed on February 1, 2017, making GoTo Meeting a flagship offering under LogMeIn and enabling the company to serve a broader customer base with integrated remote support and meeting solutions.[24] Following the merger, LogMeIn integrated the GoTo suite into its core operations, elevating GoTo Meeting as a central product while enhancing its enterprise-grade capabilities, such as improved scalability for large-scale deployments and global user accessibility.[4] This integration expanded the platform's reach in business collaboration, combining LogMeIn's remote access expertise with GoTo Meeting's video conferencing strengths to support more robust features for distributed teams.[25] By leveraging the combined resources, LogMeIn focused on enterprise enhancements, including better integration with IT management tools to handle increased demand for secure, high-volume meetings worldwide.[26] In February 2022, LogMeIn rebranded to GoTo, reviving the original nomenclature from the ExpertCity era to unify its product ecosystem under a single identity centered on simplified IT and communication solutions.[7] This rebranding incorporated legacy products like join.me—LogMeIn's collaboration tool since 2011—into the GoTo portfolio, with join.me fully transitioned and aligned to GoTo Meeting functionalities by 2023 to streamline offerings for users.[27] The shift emphasized a cohesive brand for remote work tools, reducing fragmentation and enhancing market positioning without altering core GoTo Meeting operations. Later in 2022, GoTo acquired Miradore, a mobile device management (MDM) provider, in a deal announced in July and completed in September, to bolster device compatibility and security across its platforms.[28] This acquisition introduced advanced MDM features to GoTo Meeting, enabling better management of mobile endpoints in enterprise environments and supporting hybrid work setups.[29] In 2025, GoTo continued to innovate with AI-powered features for products like LogMeIn Resolve and GoTo Connect, enhancing unified endpoint management and customer experience capabilities as of November 2025.[30][31]Technology
Core Architecture
GoTo Meeting operates as a hybrid web-hosted service, combining cloud-based infrastructure with optional installed applications for desktop and mobile devices to facilitate screen sharing and collaboration. The system employs a multi-tier architecture hosted in data centers, where the host's desktop or screen is broadcast to attendees in real-time using proprietary protocols optimized for bandwidth efficiency. This setup enables seamless session initiation without requiring inbound network ports, relying instead on outbound connections over TCP and UDP to navigate corporate firewalls and proxies effectively.[32][33][34] The connectivity model prioritizes low-latency transmission by preferring UDP ports such as 8200 and 1853 for video and VoIP data, falling back to TCP on ports 80 and 443 when UDP is unavailable due to network restrictions. This outbound-only approach allows instant joining via web browsers without software downloads, while full-featured access is provided through dedicated apps. For data handling, GoTo Meeting utilizes real-time streaming with adaptive bitrate encoding, which dynamically adjusts video and audio quality based on available bandwidth, such as during LTE or low-speed connections, to minimize buffering and maintain session stability. VoIP integration includes built-in noise suppression to filter background interference, ensuring clearer audio transmission.[33][1][35] As of 2025, platform support encompasses Windows 10 and later for desktop; macOS 10.15 and later for organizers and 11 and later for attendees via the GoTo app; Linux and Chrome OS users can join and organize through the web app using the three most recent versions of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Mobile compatibility extends to iOS 15.1+ and Android 8+ via a unified GoTo app, while integration with SIP-enabled hardware, such as GoTo Room systems, allows connection of conference room devices for enhanced in-room experiences.[36][37][38]Security and Compatibility
GoTo Meeting employs AES-256-bit encryption for data at rest, while video and audio streams in conferencing sessions use SRTP with AES-128-HMAC-SHA1.[1] For data in transit, the platform utilizes Transport Layer Security (TLS) version 1.2 or higher to secure communications between clients and servers.[35] Video streams are further encrypted using Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP) with AES-128-HMAC-SHA1, maintaining confidentiality during transmission.[3] Access controls in GoTo Meeting include meeting locks, which prevent additional participants from joining after the session starts, and one-time passwords required for entry to verify authorized attendees.[39] These features create virtual waiting rooms where potential participants wait for host approval, enhancing security by allowing organizers to manage entry dynamically.[40] For healthcare users, GoTo Meeting supports HIPAA compliance through a signed Business Associate Agreement (BAA), enabling secure handling of protected health information in telehealth scenarios.[9] The platform holds SOC 2 Type II certification, demonstrating adherence to rigorous controls for security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy following independent audits.[41] GoTo Meeting is also fully compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), incorporating data protection measures such as explicit consent mechanisms and data minimization practices for European users.[42] As part of its security posture, the service undergoes regular vulnerability scans and maintains high-availability infrastructure across global data centers, achieving 99.999% uptime to ensure reliable session delivery.[43] Compatibility enhancements allow GoTo Meeting to operate on restrictive networks through configurable firewall allowlists for DNS names and specific ports, minimizing disruptions in enterprise environments.[33] Following the deprecation of standalone mobile apps in 2023, users transitioned to the unified GoTo mobile application, which supports seamless meeting participation on iOS and Android devices with improved cross-platform consistency.[11] The platform integrates with Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) devices, enabling direct connections from hardware video conferencing systems to cloud-based sessions.[44] Browser support focuses on modern versions, including the three most recent releases of Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, providing backward compatibility for essential web app functionality without requiring downloads.[45]Features and Functionality
