Early life and youth career
Early life
Homam Al-Amin Mohamed Ahmed, commonly known as Homam Ahmed, was born on 25 August 1999 in Doha, Qatar, to Sudanese parents. He holds citizenship of both Qatar and Sudan. Raised in the Qatari capital, Ahmed grew up in an environment supportive of youth sports development, which laid the foundation for his athletic pursuits.[1][8]Aspire Academy training
Homam Ahmed joined Aspire Academy during the 2016/2017 academic year, entering the institution's elite youth development program at age 17.[9] The academy, established in 2004 as Qatar's premier sports institution, provided integrated training in football, academics, and sports science for talented boys from Grade 7 onward, emphasizing holistic athlete development.[9] Ahmed, born on August 25, 1999, in Doha, excelled academically as a clever and distinguished student, known for his attentiveness, eagerness to contribute in class, and humble, respectful demeanor.[9] His time at Aspire also focused on enhancing English language and communication skills, complementing his athletic training.[9] In football-specific training, Ahmed honed his skills as a left full-back or central defender, building strong technical abilities through the academy's rigorous curriculum.[9] Ahmed's development shone in youth competitions, where he played an important role in Aspire Academy reaching the final of the 2017 Al Kass International Cup, a prominent under-17 tournament featuring global academies.[9] Ahmed graduated from Aspire Academy in 2017, marking the culmination of his formative training period.[10] The academy's emphasis on discipline, technique, and versatility prepared him for his professional debut with K.A.S. Eupen in Belgium later that year, a club linked to the Aspire Zone Foundation.[11] In January 2018, as an Eupen squad member, he participated in the team's winter training camp hosted at Aspire Academy, returning to the facilities that shaped his early career.[11] His Aspire foundation later contributed to his selection for Qatar's 2022 FIFA World Cup squad, where he was one of 18 academy graduates.[12]Club career
K.A.S. Eupen
Homam Ahmed joined K.A.S. Eupen, a Belgian Pro League club, in January 2018 on a transfer from Qatar's Aspire Academy, initially integrating into the club's youth setup.[13] He was assigned squad number 24 during the 2017–18 season and featured primarily with Eupen's reserve team, K.A.S. Eupen II, in the Belgian National Division 1 from January 2018 to June 2019, where he developed as a left-back.[14][4] Although registered with the senior squad, Ahmed did not make any first-team appearances during his tenure, which spanned the 2017–18 and 2018–19 seasons, focusing instead on reserve-level matches to hone his defensive skills.[15] His time at Eupen marked an early European exposure for the young Qatari prospect, contributing to his technical growth before returning to Qatar.[16] In July 2019, he transferred to Al-Gharafa in the Qatar Stars League, ending his association with the Belgian club.[17]Al-Gharafa
Homam Ahmed joined Al-Gharafa on 30 June 2019, transferring from Belgian club K.A.S. Eupen on a free transfer.[18] He made his senior debut for the club on 28 September 2019 in a 1–3 loss to Al-Sailiya in the Qatari Stars League.[6] His early performances established him as a regular starter, appearing in 11 league matches during the 2019–20 season without scoring.[19] Over the next seasons, Ahmed solidified his role in Al-Gharafa's defense, appearing in 23 league matches during 2020–21 and scoring twice, including his first league goal on 27 November 2020 in a 3–1 win over Al-Khor.[19] In 2021–22, he featured in 22 league games without finding the net but contributed to the team's continental efforts, playing 5 matches in the AFC Champions League with 1 assist.[20] The following year, 2022–23, saw reduced league minutes at 9 appearances and 1 goal, amid a season where Al-Gharafa reached the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League, with Ahmed logging 4 appearances.[19][20] His versatility occasionally saw him push forward, resulting in 8 goals and 11 assists across all competitions during his tenure. Ahmed's time at Al-Gharafa totaled 100 appearances, during which he helped the club maintain competitive showings in the Qatari Stars League, though no major domestic trophies were secured in this period. Notable performances included his contributions in cup competitions, such as the 2021–22 Emir of Qatar Cup, where Al-Gharafa advanced to the quarter-finals. He departed the club on 11 July 2024, transferring to rivals Al-Duhail in a swap deal involving Assim Madibo, Rabh Boussafi, and Mohammed Muntari.[1]Al-Duhail
Homam Ahmed transferred to Al-Duhail SC from Al-Gharafa in July 2024 through a high-profile swap deal designed to reinforce the club's defensive lineup ahead of the 2024/25 Ooredoo Stars League season.[21] In exchange, Al-Duhail sent midfielder Assim Madibo, winger Rabh Boussafi, and forward Mohammed Muntari to Al-Gharafa, highlighting the mutual benefits of the agreement between the two Qatari powerhouses.[21] The move positioned Ahmed as a key addition to Al-Duhail's backline, where his experience as a versatile left-back was expected to provide depth and competition in a squad aiming to challenge for the league title and success in continental play.[1] Ahmed signed a two-year contract with Al-Duhail, committing him to the club until June 2026.[1] Upon arrival, he quickly integrated into the first team, debuting in the league shortly after the season's start on August 10, 2024.[21] His role emphasized defensive solidity combined with forward surges, aligning with Al-Duhail's attacking style under their coaching staff. During the 2024/25 campaign, Ahmed featured in domestic and international fixtures, contributing to a season where Al-Duhail recorded 16 wins in 22 league matches and notable victories such as a 6-1 rout over Qatar SC and a 5-0 win against Al-Arabi.[15][22] In continental competition, Ahmed played a part in Al-Duhail's AFC Champions League Elite efforts, appearing in qualifying and group stage matches to help secure progression.[15] As of November 2025, in the 2025/26 season, he has become a more established presence, logging over 650 minutes across league and Asian fixtures in 11 appearances, with no goals or assists but consistent performances in maintaining clean sheets and supporting transitions.[15] His contributions have been integral to Al-Duhail's competitive standing, as the team continued to vie for top honors in the Stars League while balancing commitments in the AFC Champions League Elite.[23]International career
Youth career
Ahmed represented Qatar at the youth international level, beginning with the under-19 team in the 2018 AFC U-19 Championship in Indonesia. He featured in five matches during the tournament, helping Qatar secure a fourth-place finish after a 1-0 semifinal loss to Saudi Arabia, which earned the team qualification for the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.[24][25][26] Ahmed was included in Qatar's squad for the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, where he made one appearance in the group stage. Qatar drew 2-2 with Senegal but suffered defeats to Ukraine (0-1) and the United States (0-4), finishing last in Group D and exiting the competition without advancing.[27][28][29] Transitioning to the under-23 side, Ahmed earned seven caps between 2020 and 2021, primarily as a left back. He participated in the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship in Thailand, playing three full matches as Qatar recorded one win and two draws in the group stage before elimination. His youth international career included one goal, scored at the U-20 level.[30][4]Senior career
Homam Ahmed made his senior international debut for the Qatar national team on 14 November 2019, coming on as a substitute in a 2–0 friendly victory over Singapore at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha.[31] He earned his first competitive appearance in World Cup qualifying on 4 December 2020, substituting in during a 5–0 home win against Bangladesh. By November 2025, Ahmed had accumulated 68 caps and scored 3 goals for Qatar, establishing himself as a reliable left-back known for his defensive solidity and overlapping runs.[32][6][33] Ahmed's breakthrough came during the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, where Qatar participated as a guest nation. He featured in all five matches, starting four, as Qatar advanced to the semi-finals before a 1–0 loss to the United States. His standout moment was scoring the opening goal in a 2–0 group-stage win over Honduras on 20 July 2021, rifling a left-footed shot from a tight angle into the top corner in the 25th minute.[34] Later that year, Ahmed netted his second international goal in a 1–1 friendly draw against Luxembourg on 7 September 2021, equalizing with a low drive from the edge of the box in the 43rd minute.[35] Qatar's hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup marked Ahmed's most prominent stage to date. Selected in the 26-man squad, he started all three group-stage matches as Qatar exited with three defeats, conceding six goals and scoring one goal. Ahmed contributed defensively, recording 12 tackles and 7 interceptions across the tournament, though Qatar's campaign highlighted defensive vulnerabilities.[32] In the 2023 AFC Asian Cup—held in early 2024—Ahmed played a pivotal role in Qatar's successful title defense, their second consecutive final appearance. He started all five matches, providing width on the left flank in the 3–2 extra-time semi-final win over Iran. Qatar defeated Jordan 3–1 in the final on 10 February 2024. Ahmed's third international goal came earlier in a June 2023 friendly, opening the scoring in a 2–1 win over Jamaica with a first-half finish.[36][37] Ahmed also represented Qatar at the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, starting all five matches en route to the quarter-finals, where they fell 1–0 to eventual champions Mexico. His consistent performances have solidified his place in the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where as of November 2025, he made 10 appearances in Asia's third round, contributing 2 assists.[32]Career statistics
