Gameplay

[edit]
In the game, players race against each other using Hot Wheels vehicles in miniature tracks set in various everyday locations.

Hot Wheels Unleashed is a racing game played from a third-person perspective. In the game, the player assumes control of vehicles from the Hot Wheels franchise, and races against other opponents in miniature tracks set in various everyday locations and environments, such as a garage, kitchen, and bedroom. The vehicles featured in the game can be extensively customized. Sixty-six different cars were available at launch.[2] The game also features a career mode, a time trial, and a track editor.[3][4] The game supports up to 12 players in an online session, though players can also compete with another player in a local split-screen multiplayer mode.[2] Players had the opportunity to submit their car designs in the “Hot Wheels Unleashed Design Battle” and the winning design was used to create a Hot Wheels toy available for purchase in December 2022.[5]

Development

[edit]

The game was developed by Italian developer Milestone, the company behind the MotoGP games and the Ride series, and marks the first console game based around the property since 2013.[6][7] Milestone pitched the idea to Mattel in 2018 although they did not expect them to take up the offer.[8] Milestone desired to create such a game after realizing that although they specialized in sim racers that was a "niche of the niche" and the racing genre itself was quite crowded, with lead game designer Federico Cardini telling Polygon "could we make a game to the level of, I don't know, Gran Turismo? Technically speaking, yes. Should we go head to head with Gran Turismo? That does not sound like a great idea".[7] The game uses a physics system similar from Milestone's other games, heavily modified so that the cars would be able to perform stunts the series is known for. The team wanted to base the gameplay on physics because they felt that many other Arcade racers felt "scripted" with the cars not reacting to the player's action.[7]

According to Cardini, the development team desired to accurately replicate Hot Wheels vehicles to a "1:1 ratio" in the game. Using this method, the team added in many subtle details to the cars and maps.[6] Cardini described the in-game garage as the "inspiration to the entire game", noting its many characteristics.[6]

Marketing and release

[edit]

The game was officially announced in February 2021.[9] The game was released on September 30 the same year for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and Series S.[10] Milestone also had plans to support the game extensively with downloadable content upon launch.[11] A version for Amazon Luna was made available on July 21, 2022.[12] A Game of the Year edition containing all of the downloadable content was released for all available platforms alongside Stadia on September 29 the same year.[13] A special edition was released on September 30, 2021. This special edition included the digital Street Beasts pack, a special livery for the well known Bone Shaker car, and a steel case for the game.

Reception

[edit]

According to review aggregator Metacritic, the PlayStation 5 and Windows versions received "generally favorable" reviews,[15][17] while the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X/S versions received "mixed or average" reviews.[14][16][18]

Modes and objectives

Hot Wheels Unleashed features a variety of single-player and multiplayer modes centered around objectives such as winning positions, completing laps within time limits, and achieving goals to progress and unlock content. The primary single-player experience is the City Rumble campaign, a structured adventure set in a hub world representing a toy-filled city, where players complete a series of races, time trials, and challenges to advance through branching paths and ultimately furnish a personal basement garage. Progression in City Rumble involves defeating AI opponents in standard races to unlock new areas, with side objectives like collecting hidden items or meeting lap requirements providing additional rewards such as coins and upgrade materials. For casual single-player play, Quick Race mode allows players to select any unlocked track and compete against AI opponents with the goal of securing top finishing positions for standard rewards like coins, without the structured progression of the campaign. Time Trial mode emphasizes precision and speed, challenging players to beat personal best lap times or ghost recordings of optimal runs on selected tracks, often as a way to practice mechanics or fulfill campaign side goals. Both modes support replayability, with objectives tied to improving times or win streaks to maximize earnings. Multiplayer options include local split-screen for up to two players, ideal for offline head-to-head on any unlocked or custom track, and online supporting up to 12 participants in ranked or unranked races where the primary objective is to outperform others through position-based scoring. Online sessions feature track voting among prebuilt and user-created courses, fostering competitive play with global leaderboards for top performers. Within these modes, boss events serve as pivotal challenges, consisting of five unique races against specialized AI bosses that incorporate environmental hazards and require mastery of drifting and boosting to overcome, rewarding players with exclusive and significant progression advancements upon . Additional challenges, such as secret races hidden in the City Rumble map, demand specific vehicle types or perfect runs to access, enhancing by tying into broader completion goals. The game's progression system revolves around earning in-game currencies—coins from race finishes and gears from trading duplicate vehicles—to upgrade vehicles and build a personal collection. Coins fund purchases of blind boxes containing new vehicles or direct shop buys, while gears enable stat improvements in categories like speed, acceleration, handling, braking, and boost initiation, allowing players to tailor cars for different race types and gradually expand their garage to over 60 base vehicles plus DLC additions. This resource-based loop encourages repeated play across modes to amass materials and unlock content, with full campaign completion revealing all tracks and customization options. Vehicle customization, including liveries and decals, can be applied post-upgrade to personalize rides for competitive edge or aesthetic appeal.

Vehicles, tracks, and mechanics

Hot Wheels Unleashed features a selection of over 130 vehicles inspired by the iconic toy line, including licensed models such as the Bone Shaker hearse and the Rodger Dodger , each scanned from real die-cast cars for authentic 1:64-scale detail. Vehicles vary in rarity levels from Common to Super Treasure Hunt, influencing attributes like speed, acceleration, handling, and boost capacity, with higher rarities providing advantages in physics-based performance. Players access these cars through a garage interface, where upgrades using in-game currency enhance stats up to Legendary level, emphasizing strategic selection based on track demands. Tracks in the game are constructed using modular pieces that mimic classic orange tracks, set in diverse environments such as cluttered kitchens, overgrown gardens, and urban cityscapes, allowing for loops, jumps, ramps, and twists that test precision and speed. The track editor enables players to snap together pieces intuitively, bending and stretching them to create custom layouts, with interactive elements like spider webs or fire-breathing dragon modules adding hazards that can slow or derail vehicles if not navigated carefully. These environments feature dynamic interactions, such as crashing into barriers or leveraging shortcuts, which integrate seamlessly with the modular design to promote replayability. Core mechanics revolve around arcade-style with physics-based handling, where players control via the primary trigger, braking to maintain traction, and drifting—initiated by sharp steering inputs while maintaining speed—to build a boost meter for temporary speed surges. Effective drifting not only charges boosts but also allows mid-air adjustments during jumps, crucial for landing on elevated track sections without falling off. Vehicle weight and shape influence and stability, creating a balanced challenge between raw speed from muscle cars and agile handling from compact models. Customization extends to a livery editor for applying paint jobs, decals, and patterns to vehicles, alongside performance tweaks in the garage that adjust handling and boost efficiency without altering core physics. Tracks built in the editor support similar environmental flair, with pieces snapping precisely to form cohesive paths amid destructible or reactive surroundings, enhancing the toy-like chaos of races. These elements combine to deliver a focused experience centered on skillful navigation and creative construction.
