Formation and early years (2006–2012)
Ingested was formed in 2006 in Manchester, Greater Manchester, England, emerging from the remnants of the short-lived band Age of Suffering.[2] The original lineup consisted of vocalist Jason Evans, drummer Lyn Jeffs, guitarists Sean Hynes and Sam Yates, and bassist Brad Fuller, who collectively shaped the band's early brutal death metal direction.[2] This core group focused on crafting heavy, aggressive music rooted in the underground scene, quickly establishing a presence through local performances and demo recordings. The band's debut album, Surpassing the Boundaries of Human Suffering, was recorded in October 2008 and released on June 22, 2009, through Siege of Amida Records, with a subsequent reissue on January 12, 2010, via Candlelight Records in the United States.[9] Featuring nine tracks, including standout brutal cuts like "Skinned and Fucked" and "Copremesis," the album showcased the band's slamming riffs, blast beats, and guttural vocals, produced to emphasize raw intensity within the death metal framework.[10] It marked Ingested's entry into the international underground metal circuit, gaining traction among fans of extreme genres for its unrelenting heaviness. In 2010, Ingested gained significant exposure through their first major tour, serving as openers for the European Bonecrusher Fest headlined by The Black Dahlia Murder, alongside acts such as Carnifex, Obscura, and 3 Inches of Blood.[11] The multi-date trek across Europe represented a pivotal step in building the band's live reputation, allowing them to refine their high-energy performances and connect with broader audiences in the brutal metal community.[12] The band's second album, The Surreption, followed on July 4, 2011, again via Siege of Amida Records, expanding on their debut with a more refined yet vicious sound.[13] The recording process involved drums engineered by Stu McKay at Studio 6 in Swindon, UK, while guitars, bass, and vocals were handled by Rob Purnell, Jonny Burgen, and Dave Purnell at Cherrywood Studio in Bristol, UK, with additional re-amping by James Walford at Rapture Audio in Birmingham.[14] Comprising 11 tracks such as "This Disgusting Revelation" and the instrumental closer "Omega," the album highlighted technical growth in song structure and brutality.[14] It received positive initial reception in underground metal circles for its accessible yet crushing deathcore-infused death metal, solidifying Ingested's status among extreme music enthusiasts.[15]The Architect of Extinction and The Level Above Human (2013–2018)
In 2013, Ingested released their debut EP Revered by No One, Feared by All on December 16 through Siege of Amida Records, marking a pivotal step in refining their sound after earlier works.[16] The EP features four tracks—"Titanomachy," "Regicide," "Uncrowned," and "Endgame"—clocking in at approximately 15 minutes and 44 seconds, showcasing aggressive slam riffs, guttural vocals, and rapid breakdowns that emphasized the band's brutal death metal and deathcore fusion.[17] This release served as a crucial hype-builder, demonstrating the band's ability to evolve from prior missteps by delivering a more cohesive and punishing collection that resonated with underground metal audiences, ultimately positioning them for broader recognition.[18][19] Following the EP's momentum, Ingested signed with Century Media Records, a major label in the metal scene, which facilitated their professional growth and international push. Their third studio album, The Architect of Extinction, arrived on January 20, 2015, in North America (January 12 in Europe), comprising 10 tracks including "The Divine Right of Kings," "Narcissistic Apathy," and "Endless Despondency," with a total runtime of 41 minutes and 44 seconds.[20] The album was produced by the band themselves and mixed and mastered by George Lever at The Crypt Studios in Lancashire, England, resulting in a polished yet visceral sound that amplified their signature grooves and thematic focus on societal collapse and human depravity.[21] This release solidified their reputation for heavy, groove-laden brutality and led directly to their first U.S. tour in autumn 2015, the Devastation on the Nation package, where they supported headliners Origin and Krisiun alongside Aeon, Alterbeast, and Soreption, exposing them to larger American crowds and marking a breakthrough in transatlantic visibility.[22] In 2016, Ingested parted ways with Century Media and signed with Unique Leader Records on May 23, a label renowned for technical death metal and deathcore acts, aligning with their intensifying sonic direction.[23] This move paved the way for their fourth album, The Level Above Human, released on April 27, 2018, featuring 10 tracks such as "Sovereign," "Invidious," and "Misery Leech," spanning 44 minutes and highlighting evolved song structures with intricate riffing, dynamic tempo shifts, and enhanced production that pushed their technical proficiency beyond prior efforts.[24] Self-produced by the band, the album emphasized advancements in complexity, blending slamming heaviness with progressive elements to create a more ambitious and replayable death metal experience.[25] The release coincided with an escalated touring schedule, including a second North American run within 12 months of their debut U.S. outing, extensive European headlining dates, and high-profile support slots like the 2016 Summer Slaughter Tour alongside acts such as Thy Art Is Murder and Slaughter to Prevail, as well as festival appearances at events like Mammothfest in 2018, where they served as main support to Decapitated.[23][26][27]Where Only Gods May Tread, Ashes Lie Still, The Tide of Death and Fractured Dreams, and lineup changes (2019–present)
In 2019, Ingested released the EP Call of the Void on June 14 through Unique Leader Records, featuring four tracks that served as a bridge between their prior full-length and upcoming material, emphasizing the band's signature slamming death metal style with intricate breakdowns and atmospheric elements.[28][29] The band's fifth studio album, Where Only Gods May Tread, followed on August 14, 2020, also via Unique Leader Records, showcasing a refined blend of brutal death metal aggression and melodic undertones across ten tracks produced to highlight the group's technical prowess.[30][31] Plans for extensive touring in support of the album were severely disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, limiting live performances and forcing a shift toward virtual promotions and streaming events throughout 2020 and into 2021.[32] In 2021, Ingested issued The Surreption II (Redux) on July 30 via Unique Leader Records, a complete re-recording of their 2011 debut album to commemorate its tenth anniversary and demonstrate the band's musical evolution, with updated production that enhanced the original tracks' heaviness and clarity while preserving their raw energy.[33][34] The sixth album, Ashes Lie Still, arrived on November 4, 2022, marking Ingested's debut with Metal Blade Records and featuring ten tracks born from personal turmoil, including the sudden death of frontman Jason Evans' father during the writing process, which infused the music with themes of loss and resilience alongside guest vocals from Julia Frau on the title track.[35][36][37] Ashes Lie Still was followed by the seventh studio album, The Tide of Death and Fractured Dreams, released on April 5, 2024, again through Metal Blade Records, with production emphasizing dynamic shifts between ferocious riffs and soaring melodies, including a guest appearance by Josh Middleton of Sylosis on "Expect to Fail," though it did not achieve notable chart positions.[38][39][40] Throughout this period, Ingested experienced several lineup shifts, beginning with the departure of bassist Brad Fuller in 2019 after over a decade with the band, followed by guitarist Sam Yates exiting in 2021.[8] In November 2024, longtime vocalist Jason Evans left the group for undisclosed reasons, prompting the addition of Josh Davies as the new frontman in December 2024.[2] By early 2025, session members Andrew Virrueta on guitars and Thomas O'Malley on bass, who had joined in 2023 and 2022 respectively, were promoted to full-time status, solidifying the current lineup alongside drummer Lyn Jeffs and guitarist Sean Hynes.[8][2][5] Post-pandemic, Ingested resumed touring aggressively, including supports for The Black Dahlia Murder and Cryptopsy on North American runs in 2024, a performance at Download Festival in 2025, and the release of the single "Altar of Flesh" on February 11, 2025, via Metal Blade Records, which introduced the updated lineup with Davies' distinctive growls and set the stage for further international dates.[6][41] In October 2025, the band released the single "Nefarious Tongues" via Metal Blade Records, accompanied by an official music video. Later that month, Ingested embarked on their Evisceratour 2025, a headline North American tour running through November 2025.[42][43]Musical style and influences
Genre and characteristics
Ingested is classified as a death metal band incorporating elements of deathcore and slam death metal, known for its aggressive fusion of brutal technicality and groove-oriented heaviness.[2] The band's sound emphasizes punishing rhythms and visceral intensity, drawing from the raw ferocity of UK extreme metal traditions while integrating hardcore breakdowns for maximum impact.[4] Central to Ingested's style are brutal breakdowns, complex guitar riffing with low-tuned, grinding tones, and relentless drumming featuring blast beats and double-bass patterns that create a sense of unrelenting momentum.[44] These elements combine jagged, staggered riffs with groovy slams, producing a dense, groove-heavy texture that prioritizes rhythmic drive over melody in their foundational approach.[45] Vocally, the band employs guttural growls, deep pig squeals, and high-pitched screams to convey themes of violence and domination, with frontman Jason Evans delivering ferocious, multi-layered harsh vocals that enhanced the music's primal aggression until his departure in late 2024. Production techniques focus on technical precision and organic heaviness, often through collaborations with engineers like Nico Beninato and mixers such as Christian Donaldson, resulting in clear yet crushing mixes that highlight the rhythm section's power.[46][24] Ingested's brutality and groove align them with peers like Cattle Decapitation and Thy Art Is Murder, sharing a commitment to extreme heaviness and rhythmic innovation within the death metal spectrum.[47][48]Evolution of sound
Ingested's early sound from 2006 to 2012 was characterized by raw brutal death metal with a strong emphasis on slams, as heard in their debut album Surpassing the Boundaries of Human Suffering (2009), which featured fast double bass drumming, tremolo riffs reminiscent of old-school Cannibal Corpse, and low, violent vocals without the deathcore elements that would emerge later.[49] By their second album, The Surreption (2011), the band began evolving toward a blend of brutal death metal and deathcore, incorporating chunkier guitars for infectious grooves, accessible breakdowns, and occasional atmospheric leads, though the production remained gritty and focused on skull-crushing aggression.[15] During the mid-period from 2013 to 2018, Ingested refined their style with progressive elements and technical influences, as seen in The Architect of Extinction (2015), which improved songwriting through sharper death metal riffs at full speed alongside heavy slams, moving beyond the rawness of their debut while maintaining visceral brutality.[20] This progression culminated in The Level Above Human (2018), described by the band as their "ultimate" album, integrating diverse death metal influences into a cohesive, polished sound optimized for live performance, with evolved structures that avoided slam clichés.[50] In recent years from 2019 onward, the band's music has gained greater atmospheric depth and cinematic quality, starting with the experimental Call of the Void EP (2019), which tested mature creative boundaries beyond traditional slams.[51] Where Only Gods May Tread (2020) marked a significant sonic evolution, incorporating clean vocals, expansive tracks up to nine minutes, and ambitious experimentation that added emotional layers to their heaviness.[52][53] Ashes Lie Still (2022) further balanced melody with crushing riffs and haunting clean guitar elements, introducing more vulnerability and atmospheric sound effects.[54] The latest album, The Tide of Death and Fractured Dreams (2024), builds on this by confidently branching into melodic territory with clean vocals and industrial edges, delivering heavier grooves and tempo shifts than its predecessor while blending technical deathcore with classic death metal for a unique, mature fury.[55][56] Following the departure of vocalist Jason Evans in late 2024, Ingested introduced a new lineup in early 2025, including vocalist Josh Davies. Their single "Altar of Flesh" (2025) revisits the band's raw brutal death metal roots with organic energy and Texas death metal influences, signaling continued evolution.[6] Overall, Ingested's trajectory reflects a shift from underground raw brutality to a polished, genre-blending metal style, influenced by label transitions and extensive touring, as the band has consistently evolved organically without repeating formulas.[51][50]Band members
Current members
As of November 2025, Ingested's lineup consists of five members, reflecting a refreshed configuration announced in February 2025 following transitions from former members in 2024.[6] Josh Davies – lead vocals (since December 2024): Davies, previously known for his work with the bands Malice and Monasteries in the UK metal scene, made his debut with Ingested on the single "Altar of Flesh," bringing a dynamic and brutal vocal style to the group's sound.[57][4][5] Sean Hynes – guitars (since 2006): A founding member of Ingested, Hynes has served as the band's primary songwriter, contributing approximately 90% of the material across their discography and shaping their signature death metal riffs.[6][58] Lyn Jeffs – drums (since 2006): Also a founding member, Jeffs is renowned for his technical prowess, particularly his ferocious blast beats and sustained double-bass patterns that drive the band's high-speed aggression.[6][49] Andrew Virrueta – guitars, backing vocals (full-time since 2025): Virrueta, formerly of The Faceless and Interloper, initially joined as a touring guitarist for 18 months before becoming a permanent member; his technical riffing has influenced the band's recent compositions with added depth and dynamism.[6][59] Thomas O'Malley – bass (full-time since 2025): O'Malley, also active with Worm Shepherd, transitioned from a touring role to full membership, enhancing the band's low-end groove with his solid foundation during live performances and recordings.[6][59]Former members
Ingested's founding lineup included three key members who departed over the years, each contributing significantly to the band's early development and sound. Jason Evans served as lead vocalist from the band's formation in 2006 until his departure on November 25, 2024.[60][61] As a co-founder, Evans shaped the band's aggressive vocal style across multiple albums and tours.[4] The split was described as amicable and mutually agreed upon as the best step for the band's future.[62] Brad Fuller was the bassist from 2006 to 2019, also as a founding member who helped establish the band's heavy low-end foundation in their initial releases.[2] He left due to inability to meet touring obligations.[63] Following his exit, the band continued as a three-piece, utilizing session bassists for recordings.[64] Sam Yates handled guitars and backing vocals from 2006 to 2021, contributing as another co-founder to the riff structures that defined Ingested's early brutal death metal and deathcore sound.[2][65] His departure in 2021 led to further adaptations in the band's live and studio setup.[58]Discography
Studio albums
Ingested's studio discography spans seven full-length albums, evolving from raw deathcore roots to more atmospheric and melodic death metal explorations. The band's releases have been issued by various labels, including independent efforts and major metal imprints, with production often handled in-house or by collaborators like Stu McKay and Christian Donaldson. Key albums emphasize technical brutality, thematic depth, and occasional guest features from extreme metal figures. The band's debut album, Surpassing the Boundaries of Human Suffering, was released in 2009 through Siege of Amida Records in partnership with Candlelight Records.[10] It features 10 tracks self-produced by the band alongside engineer Stu McKay, capturing their early slam-influenced deathcore sound with visceral themes of suffering and decay.[66][67] Their second album, The Surreption, arrived in 2011 via Siege of Amida Records, marking a step toward more intricate song structures while retaining raw, aggressive production handled primarily by the band.[13] Comprising 11 tracks, it delves into themes of abomination and consequence, solidifying Ingested's position in the UK death metal scene.[68] In 2015, The Architect of Extinction was issued by Century Media Records, produced by Stu McKay and mixed by Christian Donaldson of Cryptopsy.[21][20] This 9-track effort introduces orchestral elements and technical precision, exploring extinction and human atrocity with a polished yet brutal edge.[69] The Level Above Human, released in 2018 on Unique Leader Records, was produced by the band, engineered by Stu McKay, and mixed/mastered by Christian Donaldson.[24] Featuring 11 tracks and guest vocals from Suffocation's Frank Mullen on the opener "Sovereign," it emphasizes hyper-technical riffs and god-like transcendence themes.[70][71] The 2020 album Where Only Gods May Tread, also on Unique Leader Records, spans 10 tracks co-produced by the band and Sam Yates.[30][72] It shifts toward atmospheric depth with features from Crowbar's Kirk Windstein and The Acacia Strain's Vincent Bennett, earning acclaim as the 44th best metal album of the year from Metal Hammer.[31] In 2021, Unique Leader released The Surreption II, a re-recorded version of the 2011 album with updated production by the band and mixing at Kimera Recordings.[73] Retaining its 11 tracks, the effort refines the original's raw energy for modern clarity while preserving thematic intensity.[74] Ashes Lie Still, Ingested's 2022 Metal Blade Records debut, features 9 tracks co-produced by the band and Nico Beninato.[46][75] Incorporating melodic hooks and guests like Aborted's Sven de Caluwé, it balances ferocity with introspective elements on loss and redemption.[36] The latest release, The Tide of Death and Fractured Dreams (2024, Metal Blade Records), comprises 10 tracks co-produced by the band and Nico Beninato, with engineering at his Kimera Recordings studio.[39][76] Featuring Chimaira's Mark Hunter and Sylosis' Josh Middleton, it embraces cinematic orchestration and fractured dream motifs for an epic scope.[77]Extended plays
Ingested's extended plays represent key milestones in their discography, showcasing evolving brutality and experimentation within the death metal genre. Their debut EP, Revered by No One, Feared by All, was independently released on December 16, 2013, via Slow It Down Records, featuring four tracks: "Titanomachy," "Regicide," "Uncrowned," and "Endgame," with a total runtime of approximately 15 minutes.[16] This release demonstrated refined production and aggressive slams, serving as a bridge from their early full-lengths to more sophisticated songwriting. Following their 2018 album The Level Above Human, Ingested issued Call of the Void on June 14, 2019, through Unique Leader Records, comprising four tracks: "Mouth of the Abyss," "Eternal Kingdoms, Pt. 1," "Eternal Kingdoms, Pt. 2," and "The Empyrean Creed," clocking in at about 17 minutes.[28] The EP introduced darker, atmospheric elements alongside technical drumming and melodic undertones, marking a transitional phase in their sound.[78] In celebration of their 15th anniversary, Stinking Cesspool of Liquefied Human Remnants arrived on January 15, 2021, also via Unique Leader Records, with five tracks including an intro: "Human Abattoir (Intro)," "Butchered and Devoured," "Pre-Released Foetal Mush," "Erotic Depravity," and "Copremesis," totaling around 14 minutes.[79] This remixed and remastered collection of 2006 demo recordings highlighted the band's raw, slam-influenced origins, providing a visceral contrast to their later polished output.[80]Collaboration albums
Ingested's sole collaboration album to date is the split release North-West Slam Fest, issued independently in 2007 through Grindethic Records in a limited edition of 750 copies.[81][82] This project united three slamming brutal death metal bands from the North West of England—Crepitation, Kastrated, and Ingested—each contributing original material to showcase the regional scene's aggressive, groove-heavy sound.[81] The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered between October and November 2006, emphasizing raw production and themes of gore and depravity typical of early slam death metal.[81] Ingested provided five tracks for the split, marking their debut recording and highlighting an early focus on slamming breakdowns, guttural vocals, and instrumental ferocity that would define their initial style.[82] These songs later formed the basis for their remastered EP Stinking Cesspool of Liquefied Human Remnants in 2021, underscoring the split's foundational role in the band's development.[83] The Ingested tracks are:- "Human Abattoir" (1:17, instrumental)
- "Butchered and Devoured" (3:14)
- "Pre-Released Foetal Mush" (3:03)
- "Erotic Depravity" (3:13)
- "Copremesis" (3:51)
