[edit]After graduating from drama school, Phillips returned to Leeds to appear as Abigail Williams in The Crucible at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. By this time she had already filmed her scenes for the BBC's adaptation of Wolf Hall in which she played Jane Seymour,[3] a role she had been offered whilst still studying at Guildhall.[4] There was mild controversy following the initial airing of Wolf Hall after some historians described Phillips as 'too pretty' to play Henry VIII's third wife.[5] This criticism was disregarded by several critics who praised Phillips' performance with Screen Daily naming her as a 'Star of Tomorrow'.[6] She went on to secure roles in War & Peace, Peaky Blinders and The Crown.
An August 2018 announcement indicated that Phillips would be among the new cast to join the original actors in the feature film Downton Abbey which started principal photography at about the same time.[7] In 2020, Phillips took on the lead role in the detective series Miss Scarlet and The Duke.[8]

Childhood
Kate Phillips was born on 21 May 1989 in South West London, England.[8] She spent her early years in the area, living near Hampton Court Palace.[9] At the age of nine, Phillips and her family relocated from London, first to Nottinghamshire and later to Bristol.[9] During her childhood, she developed an early interest in performing arts through participation in school plays and weekend drama classes, which her family supported.[9] This exposure to the collaborative and creative environment of rehearsals fostered a sense of safety and reward in artistic pursuits for the young Phillips.[9] Her family's moves to more rural and regional settings in Nottinghamshire and urban Bristol shaped a varied upbringing, though details about her parents' professions remain private.[10]Education
Kate Phillips pursued her undergraduate studies in theatre at the University of Leeds, where she spent three years honing foundational skills in performance, stagecraft, and dramatic interpretation.[7] This program provided her with a broad introduction to theatrical practices, fostering an understanding of narrative construction and ensemble work essential for her future career.[11] Following her time at Leeds, Phillips advanced her training through the postgraduate MA in Acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, a prestigious institution renowned for its rigorous actor development.[12] The program emphasized intensive practical workshops, voice, movement, and text analysis, equipping her with professional-level techniques for stage and screen.[13] During her studies, she benefited from Guildhall's curriculum, which highlighted classical theatre traditions and the portrayal of historical roles, influences that shaped her affinity for period dramas.[13] Upon graduation, she received the Gold Medal from the institution.[4] Notably, Phillips secured her breakout role as Jane Seymour in the BBC miniseries Wolf Hall while still midway through her third year at Guildhall, illustrating the seamless transition from academic training to professional opportunities.[7] This achievement underscored the effectiveness of her educational foundation, allowing her to apply classroom-learned skills directly to a high-profile historical production.[14]Career
Early roles and breakthrough
Kate Phillips began her professional acting career shortly after graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2014. Her first stage role was as Abigail Williams in a production of Arthur Miller's The Crucible at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds, directed by James Brining, where she delivered a performance noted for its intensity and timing in scenes of mass hysteria.[15][16] While still a student at Guildhall, Phillips auditioned for and secured her breakthrough television role as Jane Seymour, the third wife of Henry VIII, in the BBC miniseries Wolf Hall (2015), adapted from Hilary Mantel's novel. Filmed during her final year of training, the role marked her screen debut and showcased her ability to portray a complex historical figure with subtlety and restraint, contributing to the series' overall critical success, which included BAFTA Television Awards for costume design and supporting actor.[12] Phillips' selection for the part was highlighted in industry recognition, earning her a spot as one of Screen International's UK Stars of Tomorrow in 2014.[12] Building on this success, Phillips took on supporting roles in period dramas that solidified her reputation in the genre. In 2016, she portrayed Marya Bolkonskaya, the pious and dutiful daughter of an eccentric nobleman, in the BBC adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's War & Peace, directed by Tom Harper, appearing alongside Paul Dano and Lily James in a lavish six-part miniseries praised for its scale and fidelity to the source material.[7] This role, filmed in locations across Eastern Europe, further demonstrated her versatility in historical settings and helped establish her as a rising talent in British television.Television work
Phillips gained international recognition for her recurring role as Linda Shelby, the resilient and complex wife of Arthur Shelby, in the BBC series Peaky Blinders from 2016 to 2022, appearing across seasons three through six and contributing to the show's exploration of family dynamics and post-war trauma.[17] Her portrayal highlighted the character's evolution from a supportive spouse to a figure grappling with moral ambiguities within the Shelby crime family. In 2020, Phillips assumed the lead role of Eliza Scarlet in the period mystery series Miss Scarlet and the Duke, a Victorian-era drama produced by Element Pictures and distributed by PBS Masterpiece, which has run for five seasons through 2024, with its sixth season premiering on December 7, 2025 (streaming) and January 11, 2026 (broadcast).[18] As the first female detective in 19th-century London, her character embodies independence and intellect, blending sharp wit with investigative prowess in a modern reinterpretation of historical fiction.[19] The series has showcased Phillips' ability to anchor a long-running procedural with emotional depth, earning praise for revitalizing the detective genre.[20] Phillips demonstrated versatility in supporting roles. In 2023, she played Collette Fisher, a flight attendant entangled in a high-stakes crisis, across all seven episodes of the Apple TV+ thriller Hijack, opposite Idris Elba, emphasizing tense action and interpersonal drama in a real-time hijacking narrative.[21][22] Building on her earlier portrayal of Jane Seymour in the 2015 BBC/PBS miniseries Wolf Hall, Phillips reprised the role in the 2024 sequel Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, delving deeper into the queen's nuanced position at Henry VIII's court during a period of political intrigue and personal tragedy.[23][24] This return allowed her to expand on the character's quiet strength and historical significance in the adaptation of Hilary Mantel's novels.[25]Film and theatre roles
Her early film roles included Diana Baker-Hyde in The Little Stranger (2018) and Susan in The Aftermath (2019). In 2019, Phillips portrayed Princess Mary, the daughter of King George V, in the period drama Downton Abbey, directed by Michael Engler. Her performance contributed to the film's ensemble acclaim, blending seamlessly with the established cast in this adaptation of the beloved television series. In 2021, Phillips took on a supporting role in Terence Davies' biographical film Benediction, playing Hester Gatty, the future wife of poet Siegfried Sassoon, portrayed by Jack Lowden.[26] Critics praised her portrayal for its emotional depth, capturing the character's quiet resilience and the complexities of her relationship with Sassoon amid his post-war struggles.[27] The film, which explores Sassoon's life and loves, earned Phillips recognition for conveying subtle vulnerability in intimate scenes. Phillips stars as the young adult Ioana Celibidache, wife of renowned conductor Sergiu Celibidache, in the 2025 biographical drama The Yellow Tie, directed by Serge Ioan Celebidachi. The film traces Celibidache's life from his Romanian childhood through wartime exile and his rise in the music world, with Phillips' role emphasizing Ioana's supportive presence during pivotal family challenges; Miranda Richardson plays the older version of the character.[28] Her performance in this lead supporting capacity has been noted for bringing nuance to the personal dynamics behind the conductor's legendary career. On stage, Phillips delivered a notable performance as Valerie in Conor McPherson's supernatural drama The Weir during its 2025 West End revival at the Harold Pinter Theatre, directed by the playwright himself.[4] In the play, set in a rural Irish pub where locals share ghostly tales with a newcomer, Phillips portrayed the enigmatic Valerie, whose arrival disrupts the group's dynamics and uncovers haunting revelations.[29] Her interpretation earned acclaim for its poised intensity, enhancing the production's atmospheric tension opposite co-stars Brendan Gleeson and Owen McDonnell.[30] Expanding into voice acting, Phillips provided English-language voice work for the 2025 video game adaptation Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, contributing to its narrative depth in this remastered release of the classic tactical RPG.[31] Her involvement underscores her versatility across media, following opportunities bolstered by her television acclaim.[32]Production ventures
In February 2024, Kate Phillips co-founded the production company Just John Films alongside actresses Amber Anderson and Rosie Day, establishing a female-led outfit based in London dedicated to championing women both in front of and behind the camera.[33][34] The company's mission emphasizes an artist-led approach to optioning, developing, and producing diverse, compelling stories that prioritize a welcoming and joyful creative environment, with a focus on female-driven narratives.[33][34] As one of three equal partners, Phillips draws on her extensive acting background to help identify and champion underrepresented stories, contributing to the venture's emphasis on innovative storytelling.[33][34] Just John Films' initial projects, announced between 2024 and 2025, center on historical and contemporary dramas, including a television adaptation of Annie Garthwaite's novel Cecily about the 15th-century noblewoman Cecily Neville; a series based on Jennifer Wright's biography Madame Restell, chronicling the life of 19th-century abortionist Ann Lohman; an untitled project exploring the life of poet Sylvia Plath in collaboration with Silver Salt Films; and the comedy-drama series Shinjuku Sugar Fox, a Tokyo-set coming-of-age mystery written by Josh Flower.[33][34][35][36]Personal life
Relationships
Kate Phillips has maintained a notably private personal life, particularly regarding her romantic relationships, choosing to shield details from public scrutiny despite her prominence in the British acting scene. She has been in a long-term partnership with fellow actor Oliver Chris since around 2020.[3][37] The couple's relationship became more visible through occasional joint appearances at industry events, such as the 2023 UK premiere of What's Love Got to Do with It?, where they were photographed together, though they have consistently avoided extensive media exposure.[38][37] Phillips and Chris share overlapping professional networks in British theatre and television; Chris is known for roles in series like The Crown and Green Wing, which has fostered their connection within the industry without specific collaborative projects disclosed.[3][37] No details of marriage have been publicly confirmed, reflecting Phillips' deliberate emphasis on privacy in her personal affairs.[39][3] Their partnership has resulted in family expansions.[37]Family
Kate Phillips and her partner, actor Oliver Chris, welcomed their first child, a daughter, in 2021; the child's name and likeness have been kept out of the public eye to maintain privacy.[3][37] Phillips was pregnant with their second child while filming the fifth season of Miss Scarlet and the Duke in 2024, with the baby born in December of that year.[40][41] Like their daughter, details about the second child remain private, with no public disclosures of name or photos.[3] In interviews, Phillips has described the challenges of motherhood, including the intense physical demands of childbirth, which she compared to historical experiences while preparing for her role in Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light.[37] She balances her demanding acting career—spanning projects like Peaky Blinders and Hijack—with parenting by strictly limiting family exposure to media, adhering to a personal policy of rarely posting about her children on social media and shielding their faces in any shared images.[3][8] This approach allows her family to serve as a grounded foundation amid professional commitments.[37]Filmography
