| Notes | Sister ship to Color Fantasy |
MS Color Magic is a cruiseferry owned and operated by the Norway-based shipping company Color Line on its route connecting Oslo, Norway, with Kiel, Germany. She was built at Aker Finnyards Rauma Shipyard, Finland in 2007 and has been the largest ferry in the world ever since.[3][4]
Color Magic is a sister vessel of MS Color Fantasy, delivered to Color Line in 2004. The ship has over 1000 cabins and 54 suites.[5] Unlike her sister, Color Fantasy was built in Turku. Color Magic has 89 more cabins than Color Fantasy, as well as larger conference facilities, making it slightly larger in terms of gross tonnage.[5]

MS Color Magic is a large cruiseferry owned and operated by the Norwegian shipping company Color Line, providing passenger and vehicle transport on the route between Oslo, Norway, and Kiel, Germany.[1] Built in 2007 at Aker Yards in Turku, Finland, she has a gross tonnage of 75,100 GT and measures 224 meters in length, 35 meters in beam, and 6.8 meters in draught.[2] Together with her sister ship Color Fantasy, Color Magic holds the distinction of being the world's largest cruise ship equipped with a car deck.[1]
The vessel accommodates up to 2,600 passengers across 1,016 cabins, offering a total of 2,975 beds, while her vehicle decks can carry 550 cars and provide 1,270 lane meters for trailers.[2] Powered by engines delivering 42,400 horsepower, she maintains a service speed of 22 knots and features 15 decks, including amenities such as shops, restaurants, a casino, and entertainment facilities that enhance the overnight crossing experience.[2] Registered in Norway with Oslo as her home port, Color Magic is classified by Det Norske Veritas and sails under the Norwegian flag (IMO number 9349863).[2][3]
History
Construction
The MS Color Magic was ordered by the Norwegian ferry operator Color Line on 27 May 2005, when the company signed a contract with Aker Yards for the construction of a new cruiseferry to serve the Oslo-Kiel route.[4] The agreement, valued at approximately EUR 325 million, marked a significant expansion of Color Line's fleet with a vessel designed to exceed the capabilities of its predecessor.[5] Construction took place primarily at Aker Finnyards' Rauma Shipyard in Rauma, Finland, with the hull fabricated at the adjacent Turku yard before transfer for outfitting; Aker Finnyards was part of the larger Aker Yards group, which later became known as Meyer Turku.[5] The keel was laid on 8 August 2006 in a ceremony that highlighted the project's scale, securing employment for around 1,200 workers over the build period.[4] This milestone initiated the assembly of the ship's complex structure, which combined extensive vehicle capacity with passenger-oriented features across 15 decks. The vessel was launched on 15 December 2006 from the Turku Shipyard, entering the water for the first time after months of intensive fabrication.[6] As the sister ship to the earlier MS Color Fantasy, the Color Magic adopted a similar baseline design but incorporated enhancements, including 50 additional cabins to increase passenger accommodation to over 1,000 staterooms while maintaining the hybrid ro-pax configuration.[7] [8] These modifications aimed to optimize space utilization, reflecting iterative improvements in ferry architecture for the Baltic Sea trade.[9]Delivery and christening
Following the launch at Aker Yards in Turku, Finland, MS Color Magic underwent final outfitting and testing at the Rauma yard before handover to operator Color Line. The vessel was delivered to Color Line on 6 September 2007, marking the completion of construction for the 75,100 GT cruiseferry.[10][11] Post-construction, the ship conducted initial sea trials in Finnish waters during late summer 2007 to verify propulsion systems, navigation equipment, and overall seaworthiness prior to entering service. These trials confirmed the vessel's performance capabilities, including its ability to accommodate up to 2,600 passengers and 550 vehicles on the Oslo-Kiel route.[1] MS Color Magic was christened on 15 September 2007 in Kiel, Germany, at the Bollhörnkai terminal, where thousands of spectators gathered for the event. The ceremony highlighted the ship's role as the world's largest cruiseferry at the time and included a live performance by the Norwegian band a-ha on a floating stage, broadcast on German television.[12][13][14] Compared to its sister ship MS Color Fantasy, delivered by the same yard in 2004, MS Color Magic incorporates design enhancements such as 50 additional passenger cabins and expanded conference facilities, contributing to its slightly larger gross tonnage of 75,100 GT versus 75,027 GT.[15] [8] These modifications optimized accommodation capacity and business amenities while maintaining similar overall dimensions and layout across 15 decks. The vessel officially entered revenue service on 17 September 2007, commencing operations between Oslo and Kiel.[7]Operational history
MS Color Magic commenced operations on 17 September 2007 with her maiden voyage from Oslo to Kiel, marking the start of regular service on this route for Color Line.[16] The vessel has remained under continuous ownership and operation by Color Line AS, based in Oslo, Norway, sailing under the Norwegian flag throughout her service life.[2][3] In 2015, during a scheduled drydock refurbishment, the ship's four Wärtsilä 8L46 engines received upgrades to their turbochargers (from model TPL 73-A30 to TPL 73-A32), enhancing propulsion efficiency and performance.[7] Upon entering service, MS Color Magic established herself as the world's largest car-carrying cruiseferry, with a gross tonnage of 75,100 GT and capacity for 550 cars alongside up to 2,600 passengers; this distinction, shared with sister ship Color Fantasy, has persisted despite the emergence of larger pure cruise ships and ferries in other segments.[2][17] As of November 2025, the ship remains active in daily sailings on the Oslo-Kiel route, supporting Color Line's fleet amid sustained high capacity utilization trends driven by robust passenger and freight demand, as reflected in the company's 6.7% operating income growth to NOK 6.7 billion in 2024.[18][19]Design and specifications
