Milwaukee Brewers

[edit]

Gamel played his first professional season in 2005 for Milwaukee's rookie-level Helena Brewers. Gamel was promoted to the Single-A West Virginia Power in 2006 and the High Single-A Brevard County Manatees in 2007 in which he posted a 33-game hitting streak bested only by Derek Jeter.[clarification needed] He played most of the 2008 season with the Double-A Huntsville Stars before being promoted to the Triple-A Nashville Sounds on August 24.[2] In 2008, he was selected to play in the All-Star Futures Game.[3]

Gamel with the Nashville Sounds in 2009

Gamel was called up to the Majors for the first time when rosters expanded on September 1, 2008, and made his debut two days later, striking out in a pinch-hitting appearance. He recorded his first career hit, a double, on September 7, 2008, off of Chris Young of the San Diego Padres. He hit his first career home run on May 18, 2009, off of Kyle Lohse of the St. Louis Cardinals. However, he made his first fielding error at third base during the same game, even though he had made a great play just a few innings earlier. He hit his second home run off Jason Hammel of the Colorado Rockies.[citation needed]

On May 22, 2012, Gamel underwent surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and missed the rest of the 2012 season.[4]

During spring training in 2013, Gamel re-tore his surgically repaired ACL and missed the entire 2013 season.[5]

On October 3, 2013, Gamel was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs.[6] On December 2, he was non-tendered by Chicago, becoming a free agent.[7] On December 13, Gamel signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves.[8] However, he re-injured himself doing workouts before spring training and was released by the Braves on February 18, 2014.[9][10]

Somerset Patriots

[edit]

On March 6, 2015, it was reported that Gamel had signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees organization.[11] He was released by the Yankees prior to the start of the season on March 14.[12]

On March 31, 2015, Gamel signed with the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. In 73 appearances for the Patriots, he batted .196/.258/.325 with seven home runs, 34 RBI, and one stolen base. Gamel was released by Somerset on September 1.

Camden Riversharks

[edit]

On September 3, 2015, Gamel signed with the Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. In 15 appearances for the team, he slashed .132/.207/.208 with one home run and three RBI. Gamel became a free agent following the season.

Mathew Lawrence Gamel (born July 26, 1985) is an American former professional baseball player known for his time as a third baseman and first baseman in Major League Baseball with the Milwaukee Brewers. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, he emerged as a highly regarded prospect in the Brewers' system after being selected in the fourth round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of Chipola Junior College. He made his major league debut in 2008 and played parts of five seasons with Milwaukee through 2012. Gamel earned recognition for his power-hitting potential in the minors, where he received multiple All-Star selections across leagues and was named Topps Minor League Player of the Year in 2008. However, his major league career was significantly limited by injuries, including a torn right anterior cruciate ligament in 2012 that sidelined him for extended periods and contributed to his restricted playing time across just 106 games. After subsequent minor league stints with the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, and New York Yankees, he did not return to the majors, was released by the Yankees in March 2015, and played briefly in the independent Atlantic League with the Somerset Patriots and Camden Riversharks later that year before ending his professional career.

Early life

Early life and amateur career

Mathew Lawrence Gamel was born on July 26, 1985, in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, Florida. After high school, he played college baseball at Chipola College, a junior college in Marianna, Florida. In the 2005 Major League Baseball draft, Gamel was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth round with the 115th overall pick out of Chipola College. This marked the end of his amateur career and his entry into professional baseball. His brother Ben Gamel also reached the major leagues.

Baseball career

Minor leagues and prospect status

Gamel began his professional career in 2005 after signing with the Milwaukee Brewers as a fourth-round draft pick, starting at the rookie-level Helena Brewers in the Pioneer League. He advanced to Single-A West Virginia Power of the South Atlantic League in 2006, where he earned All-Star recognition in the league. In 2007, Gamel played for the High-A Brevard County Manatees in the Florida State League and compiled a 33-game hitting streak while also receiving Florida State League Player of the Week honors in June. Following the season, he participated in Hawaii Winter Baseball, where he was named MVP and Offensive Player of the Year. Gamel continued his rise in 2008, beginning the year with Double-A Huntsville Stars in the Southern League, where he was named Player of the Week twice, before earning a promotion to Triple-A Nashville Sounds in the Pacific Coast League. That season, he was selected to participate in the All-Star Futures Game, earned spots on Baseball America's Minor League All-Star team and Double-A All-Star team, and was recognized as Topps Minor League Player of the Year. Gamel was widely regarded as one of the Brewers' top prospects during this period, noted for his significant power-hitting potential at third base and ranking as the organization's number one prospect in mid-2008. He received a September call-up to the major leagues following his strong minor league performance.

Major League career with the Milwaukee Brewers

Mat Gamel made his Major League debut with the Milwaukee Brewers on September 3, 2008, pinch-hitting for Bill Hall in the eighth inning against the New York Mets and striking out looking against Duaner Sánchez. He stayed in the game defensively at third base but recorded no hits in his lone at-bat. Five days later, on September 7, 2008, against the San Diego Padres, Gamel notched his first career MLB hit with a pinch-hit double. Gamel's most extensive Major League action came in 2009, when he appeared in 61 games, batting .242 with 5 home runs and 20 RBI across 128 at-bats. On May 18, 2009, in his first start of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals, he hit his first career home run, a three-run shot off Kyle Lohse in the top of the third inning that scored Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder. He continued to see sporadic playing time over the next few seasons, appearing in just 12 games in 2010, 10 in 2011, and 21 in 2012, with limited plate appearances and no established full-time role due to injuries and roster competition. Across his five seasons with the Brewers from 2008 to 2012, Gamel played in 106 games with 240 at-bats, batting .229 with 6 home runs, 29 RBI, 4 stolen bases, and 82 strikeouts. He primarily played third base (35 games), first base (22 games), and designated hitter (8 games), with additional appearances as a pinch hitter. His final MLB game occurred on May 1, 2012, against the San Diego Padres, where he suffered a torn right ACL after crashing into the outfield wall while pursuing a foul popup by Nick Hundley; the injury required surgery and ended his 2012 season after 21 games. In February 2013, during spring training workouts, Gamel re-tore the ACL in his right knee, causing him to miss the entire 2013 season.

Later career and retirement

After his departure from the Milwaukee Brewers in 2013, Gamel was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs on October 3, 2013. He was non-tendered by the Cubs on December 2, 2013, and became a free agent. Gamel signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves on December 16, 2013, but the Braves released him on February 18, 2014, after he re-injured his knee. Gamel signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees on March 4, 2015, only to be released by the team on March 13, 2015. He then joined the independent Atlantic League for the 2015 season, playing 73 games with the Somerset Patriots where he batted .196 with 7 home runs and 34 RBI. He appeared in 15 games for the Camden Riversharks, hitting .132 with 1 home run and 3 RBI. Across his 88 total games in the Atlantic League that year, Gamel hit .185 with 8 home runs and 37 RBI. No professional baseball activity has been reported for Gamel following the 2015 season, when he was released on September 1, 2015, and became a free agent. His playing career ended at age 30 due to persistent knee injuries.
