Michael Lee Washington (January 7, 1953 – December 27, 2021) was an American professional football player who was a cornerback for nine seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL) from 1976 to 1984.

Key Information

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Washington was an All-American at Alabama in 1974 and was selected in the 3rd round (53rd overall) of 1975 NFL draft by the Baltimore Colts.[1]

His career ended after a head injury in the 1984 season opener against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.

Early life

Birth and background

Mike Washington Jr. was born in Utica, New York, and raised in the area. He attended Cicero-North Syracuse High School in Cicero, New York, where he was a three-star recruit according to ESPN. As a junior, he earned All-State honors after rushing for 1,423 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also played defense, recording 31 tackles and 3 interceptions, and was named All-CNY and MVP of the Regional Championship Game.

College football career

Buffalo Bulls (2021–2023)

Mike Washington redshirted as a freshman in 2021 at the University at Buffalo, appearing in three games and rushing for 132 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries. As a redshirt freshman in 2022, he led the Bulls in rushing with 625 yards and seven touchdowns on 150 carries, including a program-record 92-yard touchdown run. He recorded his first 100-yard game (155 yards and two touchdowns) against Bowling Green and his first multi-touchdown game against Eastern Michigan. He also contributed in the passing game with 23 receptions for 135 yards and one touchdown. In 2023, as a redshirt sophomore, he played in 11 games with four starts, rushing for 362 yards and two touchdowns on 90 carries while adding 13 receptions for 35 yards.

New Mexico State Aggies (2024)

Washington transferred to New Mexico State for the 2024 season. He played in 12 games with four starts, rushing for 713 yards and eight touchdowns on 158 carries (team-leading in rushing touchdowns) while finishing second on the team in rushing yards. He added nine receptions for 74 yards and one touchdown. He recorded two 100-yard games (152 yards against Western Kentucky and 130 against UTEP) and multiple multi-touchdown performances.
