Monona is a city in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,471 at the time of the 2020 census.
The name Monona is of American native origin.
The Monona Post Office was established in 1849 and the city was incorporated May 11, 1897. In 1916, Monona contained a public house, two stores, and several mechanic shops.
Monona is located at 43°3′5″N 91°23′26″W / 43.05139°N 91.39056°W (43.051258, -91.390529).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.17 square miles (3.03 km2), all land.
As of the census of 2020, there were 1,470 people, 661 households, and 395 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,142.8 inhabitants per square mile (441.2/km2). There were 720 housing units at an average density of 559.3 per square mile (216.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.3% White, 0.3% Black or African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 0.1% from other races and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino persons of any race comprised 1.1% of the population.
Of the 671 households, 25.0% of which had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 8.5% were cohabitating couples, 26.7% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present and 18.6% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present. 41.6% of all households were non-families. 36.1% of all households were made up of individuals, 18.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
The median age in the city was 42.0 years. 24.6% of the residents were under the age of 20; 3.3% were between the ages of 20 and 24; 25.2% were from 25 and 44; 25.8% were from 45 and 64; and 21.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.9% male and 51.1% female.
