In June 2019, it was announced he had agreed a "long-term" extension of his contract with Werder Bremen and that he would join VfL Osnabrück on a two-year loan.[6]

Following his return from loan at Osnabrück in summer 2021 Schmidt was expected to leave Werder Bremen.[7] Good performances in pre-season training and matches earned him playing time at the club.[7] In October, having made nine league appearances in which he scored one goal and made four assists, he signed a contract extension.[7]

Early life and youth career

Early life

Niklas Uwe Schmidt was born on 1 March 1998 in , . Growing up in the northern Hessian city, Schmidt was raised in a family with strong athletic ties; his parents were active in , while his older brother Sebastian played a pivotal role in sparking his interest in football by introducing him to the sport during his childhood. Kassel's local sports culture, including its regional football scene, provided an early environment that nurtured his passion for the game, though specific school or community influences beyond family remain undocumented in primary accounts. Standing at 1.84 m (6 ft 0 in), Schmidt developed a sturdy physical build in his youth that suited the demands of midfield play, contributing to his standout performances in early teams. His initial foray into organized football began at age six when he joined SpVgg Olympia , a local club where he honed basic skills amid casual youth matches. From there, he progressed to OSC Vellmar around 2007, where his under-15 team achieved notable success by climbing from the Hessen-Liga to the , showcasing his emerging talent in a competitive regional setting. In 2011, following his brother to the club, Schmidt moved to Rot-Weiß Erfurt for further development before transitioning to professional youth training at SV Werder Bremen in 2012.

Youth career

Niklas Schmidt joined the SV Werder Bremen youth academy in 2012 at the age of 14, having previously developed at local clubs in the Kassel region, including SpVgg Olympia Kassel until 2007, OSC Vellmar from 2007 to 2011, and Rot-Weiß Erfurt from 2011 to 2012. As a product of Bremen's renowned youth system, Schmidt quickly integrated into the club's underage structure, focusing on his growth as an attacking midfielder with an emphasis on goal-scoring and creative playmaking. In the 2013–14 season with the U17 team in the B-Junioren Bundesliga Nord/Nordost, Schmidt featured in 22 matches, scoring 4 goals and providing 2 assists while accumulating 1,856 minutes on the pitch. His performance improved markedly the following year (2014–15), where he played all 23 league games for the U17 side, netting 12 goals and delivering 25 assists in 2,035 minutes, showcasing his emerging talent in midfield orchestration and finishing. These contributions highlighted his tactical versatility, often deploying him in advanced roles to exploit spaces and contribute to both offensive transitions and set-piece execution within the academy's possession-based training philosophy. Schmidt transitioned to the U19 level during the 2014–15 season, making a brief appearance in one match (68 minutes, no goals). He became a mainstay in 2015–16, starting 23 games in the A-Junioren North/Northeast, where he scored 17 goals and recorded 18 assists over 1,838 minutes. That season, his prolific output helped Werder Bremen U19 win the North/Northeast division of the A-Junioren , a key milestone in his youth development.

Loan to SV Wehen Wiesbaden

In July 2018, secured Niklas Schmidt on a one-year loan from , with the agreement announced on 25 July and running until June 2019; concurrently, Schmidt's contract with Bremen was extended to support his ongoing development. At 20 years old, Schmidt brought prior experience from 62 appearances with Bremen's U23 side in the , where he had scored 5 goals and provided 6 assists, positioning him as a promising addition to Wehen's central midfield to bolster offensive play and competition. The move was intended to provide Schmidt with consistent professional minutes in a competitive environment, building on his youth and reserve exposure at Bremen. During the 2018–19 season, Schmidt adapted quickly to Wehen's fast-paced offensive style, making 33 league appearances and contributing 5 goals and 10 assists. His efforts were integral to Wehen's third-place finish in the regular season, which qualified them for the promotion playoffs; the team ultimately secured elevation to the after defeating 4–4 on aggregate (advancing on away goals) in the final. Key highlights included a left-footed goal in a 2–0 home win over promotion rivals on 31 March 2019, assisted by Sascha Mockenhaupt, which helped maintain Wehen's push for a top spot. Additionally, Schmidt scored in the first round against , contributing to a 3–1 upset victory. The loan spell marked a significant step in Schmidt's maturation, offering regular starting opportunities in a high-stakes promotion campaign and honing his skills in passing, set pieces, and offensive transitions within the demands of third-tier football. Upon returning to Werder at the end of June 2019, Schmidt had accumulated over 2,500 minutes of senior professional play, providing essential experience for his transition back to higher-level competition.

Loan to VfL Osnabrück

In June 2019, Niklas Schmidt joined VfL Osnabrück on a two-year loan from SV Werder Bremen, running until June 2021. This move followed his previous loan at SV Wehen Wiesbaden, where he had gained valuable playing minutes in the 3. Liga. During the 2019–20 season in the 2. Bundesliga, Schmidt established himself as a regular contributor, making 25 appearances, scoring 5 goals, and recording 1 assist while accumulating 1,373 minutes on the pitch. One of his standout moments came on 29 November 2019, when he opened the scoring with a solo goal in Osnabrück's 2–1 victory over league leaders Hamburger SV, helping secure three crucial points in their fight against relegation. Osnabrück finished 16th that season and advanced in the relegation playoff against Waldhof Mannheim via away goals after a 3–2 aggregate win, though Schmidt did not feature in those matches. In the 2020–21 campaign, Schmidt continued to feature prominently, appearing in 22 league games with 1 goal and 1 assist over 928 minutes. He also played both legs of the relegation playoff against Preußen Münster, contributing to Osnabrück's 4–1 aggregate victory that ensured their survival in the once again. Across his two seasons, Schmidt totaled 47 appearances and 6 goals in the , plus additional cup and playoff outings, aiding the team's consistent battle to maintain their top-tier second-division status. Schmidt's time at Osnabrück marked significant growth in his physical presence and tactical understanding, as he adapted to the higher intensity and demands of the compared to lower divisions.

Return to Werder Bremen

After returning from his loan spell at in the summer of 2021, Schmidt impressed during pre-season and friendlies, earning a spot in Werder Bremen's first-team squad despite initial expectations of a potential transfer. His prior loan experiences had honed his skills, readying him for consistent senior-level involvement. In October 2021, following a strong start to the season where he emerged as one of the team's leading scorers, Werder extended his contract until 2025. During the 2021–22 season, Schmidt became a regular fixture, making 25 league appearances with 2 goals, including a dramatic 90+6th-minute winner in a 2–1 victory over Erzgebirge Aue that aided Bremen's push for promotion. Additional highlights included a 43rd-minute goal in a 3–0 home win over on 25 February 2023 and a late consolation against Bayern Munich on 6 May 2023. Across the 2021–23 period, Schmidt amassed around 50 first-team appearances and 5 goals in all competitions, solidifying his role as a versatile attacking . However, with reduced starts in the 2022–23 campaign amid increased competition, contract extension discussions from 2021 gave way to talks about his long-term future, leading to his eventual decision to seek new opportunities elsewhere.

Toulouse FC

In August 2023, Niklas Schmidt transferred from Werder Bremen to Toulouse FC for a reported fee of €2.5 million, signing a four-year contract until June 2027. He was assigned squad number 20 and quickly adapted to Ligue 1, drawing on his prior Bundesliga experience to facilitate the transition to French football. During the 2023/24 season, Schmidt made 22 Ligue 1 appearances for Toulouse, scoring his sole league goal in a 3-0 home win against Metz on October 1, 2023, where he was named the standout performer for his contributions including three shots on target. He added one assist, helping the team secure an 11th-place finish in the league standings. In the 2024/25 season, limited to nine appearances and one assist before injury, he contributed to another mid-table campaign as Toulouse finished 10th. Across both seasons, he totaled 31 Ligue 1 outings with one goal and two assists, primarily operating as a central midfielder in a squad focused on defensive solidity and counter-attacks. Schmidt's integration into the team was marked by his versatility in midfield roles, supporting Toulouse's efforts to maintain mid-table stability amid limited cup progression, including early exits in the during both campaigns. However, his progress was halted by a tear sustained on January 10, 2025, sidelining him for approximately 300 days and causing him to miss the remainder of the 2024/25 season and the early 2025/26 matches. As of November 2025, he has resumed training with the ball, with an expected return in mid-November 2025.

International career

Youth international career

Niklas Schmidt began his youth international career with the U16 team in 2014, earning three caps and scoring two goals in friendly matches against the . These appearances marked his initial exposure to national team football, showcasing his early goal-scoring ability during a developmental phase. Schmidt's most prominent youth international stint came at the U17 level from 2014 to 2015, where he accumulated 17 caps and netted 7 goals across various competitions. He featured prominently in the qualifiers, scoring in a 3-0 elite round victory over , helping advance to the finals in . In the tournament proper, Schmidt played all five matches, including the semi-final against where he assisted a key goal in a 1-0 win, and the final against , which lost 4-1 despite his contributions alongside teammate . His form carried into the in , where he appeared in three group stage games, scoring once in a 4-0 win over ; advanced to the round of 16 but exited with a 1-2 loss to . Transitioning to the U19 team in 2016–2017, Schmidt earned 8 caps and scored 3 goals, primarily in qualifiers and friendlies. A standout performance was his in a 4-0 qualifying win over on October 11, 2016, which propelled toward the elite round. His final youth call-up came in March 2017, after which he focused on senior club opportunities without further underage international appearances. In total, across his , Schmidt made 28 appearances and scored 12 goals for .

Senior international career

As of November 2025, Niklas Schmidt has not earned any senior caps for the Germany national football team. Despite his progression through the youth ranks, where he made 17 appearances for the U17 side and eight for the U19 team, Schmidt has yet to be selected for the senior squad. The absence of senior call-ups can be attributed to the intense competition for midfield positions within the German national team. Established players such as Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Florian Wirtz, and Aleksandar Pavlović, among others, form a deep and talented pool of options, making breakthroughs challenging for players outside the Bundesliga's top echelons. Additionally, Schmidt's club situation at Toulouse FC, where he featured in nine Ligue 1 matches during the 2024/25 season with one assist before suffering a knee injury in January 2025, has likely impacted his visibility to national team selectors; as of November 2025, he is progressing in rehabilitation from the cruciate ligament tear with an expected return in mid-November 2025. No records exist of unofficial senior call-ups, training camps, or direct interest from staff as of November 2025. At age 27, Schmidt remains eligible for the senior team and could potentially earn a pathway through consistent performances in , particularly if he regains full fitness and contributes more substantially to Toulouse's midfield. His technical skills and prior youth experience provide a foundation, though breaking into the squad would require standout form amid ongoing national team transitions ahead of major tournaments.

Playing style

Positional roles

Niklas Schmidt primarily operates as a central midfielder (CM), where he anchors the midfield with a focus on distribution and game control. His versatility allows him to shift into an attacking midfielder (AM) role, contributing to offensive transitions, or adopt a position to initiate build-up play from deeper areas. Throughout his career, Schmidt has evolved from a more dynamic box-to-box in his and early senior appearances, emphasizing end-to-end involvement, to a more controlled central role in higher-level competitions. This progression is evident in his loan spell at in the 2019–20 season, where he frequently played in an advanced central or attacking midfield capacity to support forward runs and creativity. Upon returning to Werder and later joining in 2023, he transitioned to a deeper, more regulatory central midfield duty, focusing on possession retention and tactical discipline in Ligue 1. Schmidt's ambidexterity, with a preference for his left foot, enables fluid positioning without favoring one flank, often allowing him to operate centrally or slightly left-central to exploit passing lanes effectively. His physical stature at 1.84 meters further supports these roles by providing stability in duels across midfield zones.

Key attributes

Niklas Schmidt possesses notable technical skills that enhance his role in midfield, particularly his vision for passes, which enables him to identify and execute progressive balls effectively during build-up play. His left-footed accuracy stands out, allowing for precise deliveries in crossing and set-pieces, while his in tight spaces, supported by strong and control, helps him evade and maintain possession under duress. Additionally, Schmidt's proficiency in playing long balls and shooting from distance adds a direct threat to his technical profile. Physically, at 1.84 meters tall, Schmidt contributes to aerial duels with his frame, though his effectiveness in this area remains an identified weakness requiring development. His stamina supports box-to-box runs, enabling sustained involvement across both defensive and attacking phases, complemented by solid acceleration and top speed for transitions. Mentally, Schmidt exhibits tactical intelligence as a deep-lying playmaker, using composure to dictate tempo from deeper positions and distribute effectively. His high work rate in pressing contributes to team recovery efforts, reflecting a diligent approach to off-ball responsibilities. Despite these strengths, areas of improvement include goal-scoring consistency, where his finishing has been inconsistent relative to opportunities created, as evidenced by career output. His positional versatility allows these attributes to be deployed across central midfield roles.
