Development and production
Development
Nirdosh originated as an adaptation of the novel Red Affair written by Amit Khan, who also penned the screenplay and served as creative director for the film.[6] The film was originally titled Red Affair before being released as Nirdosh. Khan adapted and edited the story from the book to fit a contemporary setting, emphasizing its whodunit structure centered on suspense and mystery elements.[7] The project was initiated under UV Films, founded by Pradeep Rangwani in April 2016, marking his entry into feature film production.[8] Rangwani co-directed the film with Subroto Paul and took on producing duties, focusing on crafting a low-budget thriller that highlighted the novel's intricate plot twists. Pre-production advanced through 2016 and 2017, with the first look poster featuring lead actor Arbaaz Khan released in December 2017.[9][10] During pre-production, key technical roles were assigned, including cinematography by Arun Prasad and editing by Sanjay Sankla, to support the film's taut narrative and visual suspense. The development phase prioritized the novel's core mystery while streamlining the script for cinematic pacing, resulting in a focused thriller produced on a modest budget estimated around ₹5 crore.[10][11]Filming
Principal photography for Nirdosh began in late 2017 and concluded by early 2018, with the majority of the shoot taking place in Mumbai studios and urban settings to authentically capture the film's media and police procedural elements. Indoor sequences, including intense interrogation scenes and domestic environments, were filmed in controlled studio spaces, while thriller elements utilized practical urban locations for added realism. The production adhered to a tight low-budget schedule, enabling efficient filming without significant delays, as overseen by directors Pradeep Rangwani and Subroto Paul. Cinematographer Arun Prasad employed tense lighting schemes and strategic close-up shots to heighten suspense throughout the narrative.[12][13] Post-production progressed swiftly, with editor Sanjay Sankla completing the assembly cut prior to December 2017, aligning with the film's trailer launch that month and its eventual January 2018 release.[12][14][15]Cast and characters
Main cast
Arbaaz Khan stars as Inspector Lokhande, a sharp and intuitive Crime Branch officer who spearheads the murder investigation with a firm belief in the principle of innocence until proven guilty, methodically uncovering clues to resolve the case.[16] Manjari Fadnis plays Shinaya Grover, a dedicated media professional and content writer for a television news channel, who becomes the primary suspect in the killing of her neighbor, Rana, forcing her to navigate intense scrutiny while maintaining her composure.[17][18] Ashmit Patel portrays Gautam Grover, Shinaya's husband, whose personal involvement in the unfolding events adds depth to the domestic tensions and raises questions about loyalties within the family during the probe.[19][20]Supporting cast
Mukul Dev plays Rana, the affluent neighbor whose brutal murder in the Grover household sets off the film's central investigation and unravels a web of suspicions among the residents.[21] His character's demise serves as a pivotal red herring, prompting Inspector Lokhande to scrutinize personal motives and hidden relationships within the community.[22] Mahek Chahal portrays Adah, the paying guest residing with the Grover family, whose enigmatic presence introduces interpersonal tensions and potential conflicts that deepen the household's dynamics during the probe.[23] As a minor suspect, Adah's role contributes to the thriller's suspense through ambiguous witness accounts and subtle subplots involving romantic entanglements.[21] Additional supporting roles include police personnel such as Sub-Inspector Shalini Patil, played by Manisha Kelkar, who assists in interrogations and evidence collection, reinforcing the procedural aspects of the mystery.[24] Media colleagues of the protagonist, depicted in brief scenes, highlight the public scrutiny and ethical dilemmas faced by journalists entangled in the case, while minor suspects like Rana's wife provide fleeting testimonies that mislead the investigation.[23] Notable cameos, including a special appearance by Salman Khan, add layers of intrigue through unexpected interventions in key sequences.[25] These elements collectively build the film's atmospheric tension via diversions and contextual revelations without overshadowing the primary narrative drive.Soundtrack
Songs
The soundtrack of Nirdosh features two vocal tracks that blend romantic melodies with subtle undertones of suspense, aligning with the film's thriller narrative centered on the Grover family's unraveling secrets. Both songs were released under the Zee Music Company label on January 3, 2018.[26][27] The tracklist includes:- Saiyan Re (5:19), composed by Liyaqat Ajmeri and sung by Mohammed Irfan and Palak Muchhal, with lyrics by Shakeel Azmi.[28][29]
- Barf Si (4:47), composed by Harry Anand and sung by Armaan Malik, with lyrics by Amit Khan.[28][30]
