Family background
Rachel Skarsten was born on April 23, 1985, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.[8] She is the daughter of Mary Aileen Self Skarsten and Dr. Stan Skarsten, a Norwegian-born psychologist and founder of the Institute of Family Living.[8][9][10] Skarsten's father, originally from Bergen, Norway, worked in family counseling in Canada, and her mother is Canadian with English ancestry.[11] Skarsten has a younger brother named Jonathan Skarsten.[8] When Skarsten was nine years old, her father died suddenly from pancreatic cancer.[12][13] This loss profoundly affected her family, leading to a period of adjustment in the years following.[12]Childhood and early interests
Rachel Skarsten spent her early childhood in Toronto, Ontario, immersed in the city's multicultural environment.[14] Skarsten grew up in a bilingual household, speaking both English and Norwegian, reflecting her Norwegian heritage.[4] Her father, Dr. Stan Skarsten, passed away from pancreatic cancer when she was nine years old, leaving a profound emotional impact on the family.[15] This loss prompted financial challenges for her mother, Mary Aileen, who raised Skarsten and her younger brother Jonathan as a single parent.[13] The tragedy also marked a turning point in Skarsten's personal development, as performing became a therapeutic outlet to process her grief and escape the pain.[12] At around age nine to eleven, she sang at a televised memorial for her father, where a talent agent discovered her poise and recommended she pursue modeling and acting opportunities.[16][17] This led to her first professional work in commercials and print modeling, providing not only early exposure but also a constructive way to channel her emotions during a difficult period.[13] Prior to her father's death, Skarsten had developed a strong interest in the arts and physical activities, training in ballet with the Royal Academy of Dance for twelve years and achieving distinction at the elementary level in 1999.[18] An ankle injury ended her dance career, shifting her focus to competitive sports; she played as a goalie for the Leaside Wildcats, a top-level girls' ice hockey team in Toronto, and helped secure the Toronto City Championships in 2002 through a dramatic shootout victory.[18][19] These pursuits highlighted her athletic discipline and resilience, shaping her formative years amid personal adversity.Formal education
Skarsten completed her secondary education at Earl Haig Secondary School in Toronto, where she graduated in the top 10% of her class and was recognized as an Ontario Scholar.[18] This period followed a brief hiatus from early acting work, allowing her to focus on academics after missing much of high school due to professional commitments abroad.[9] She subsequently enrolled at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with honors in English literature and a minor in classical studies.[18][8] Skarsten graduated in 2007, having used the time to mature personally before recommitting to her acting aspirations.[9] Her university experience provided a structured academic foundation that contrasted with her nascent career in performance, during which she had already begun developing skills through youth arts programs including ballet at the Royal Academy of Dance and visual arts at the Claude Watson School for the Arts.[8] This blend of self-directed practice and academic pursuits ultimately informed her decision to relocate to Los Angeles in 2008 to advance her professional acting career full-time.[18]Acting career
Beginnings and early roles (1998–2009)
Rachel Skarsten's interest in acting was sparked in childhood when, at the age of nine, she was discovered by a talent agent while singing during a televised memorial for her late father.[16] This led to her securing representation and beginning auditions in Toronto, marking her entry into the industry as a young performer balancing school and early opportunities.[19] Her first major on-screen role came at age 13 in the Canadian TV series Little Men (1998–1999), where she portrayed Elizabeth "Bess" Laurence, a refined young student at Plumfield School, appearing in 24 episodes as a series regular.[20] This debut provided Skarsten with foundational experience in ensemble television work, following smaller appearances in projects like the TV movie Justice (1999). Building on this, she took on supporting roles in films such as Virginia's Run (2002), playing Caroline Lofton, and guest spots including Brigitte in the Disney TV movie Angels in the Infield (2000) and Jill Karrington in the sci-fi series Tracker (2001).[3] These early credits highlighted her versatility as a teen actress in family-oriented and genre programming. At 16, Skarsten achieved her breakthrough with a lead role in the WB superhero series Birds of Prey (2002–2003), debuting as Dinah Lance, a telepathic teenager who becomes the crime-fighting Black Canary alongside Oracle and Huntress in a Gotham City without Batman.[21] Filming in Los Angeles required her to relocate temporarily from Toronto, where she managed high school remotely, but the show's cancellation after one season prompted her return to Canada for a hiatus from acting.[18] This period allowed her to complete her education at Earl Haig Secondary School and enroll at Queen's University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors in English, along with a minor in Classical Studies, graduating in 2007.[9] Post-graduation, Skarsten faced typical challenges as a young Canadian actress navigating Hollywood, including intense competition for roles and the need to rebuild momentum after her academic focus.[12] She signed with new representation to pursue auditions more aggressively, appearing in TV movies like American Pie Presents: Beta House (2007) and Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (2007). In 2008, she relocated permanently to Los Angeles to capitalize on opportunities, making her feature film debut in Fifty Dead Men Walking as Sophia, a character in the thriller based on an IRA informant's true story, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. This move and role signified her renewed commitment to a full-time acting career amid the uncertainties of breaking into the U.S. market.Rise to prominence (2010–2017)
Skarsten's breakthrough in genre television came with her recurring role as Tamsin, a tough Valkyrie bounty hunter and mercenary for the Dark Fae, in the Canadian supernatural series Lost Girl from 2013 to 2015. She appeared in 34 episodes across seasons 3 through 5, portraying a complex character who evolved from antagonist to ally, blending fierceness with vulnerability. The role introduced her to a dedicated sci-fi and fantasy fanbase, with Skarsten later reflecting on Tamsin's appeal as a "vicious Valkyrie with a knack for darkness" that resonated through fan interactions and the show's cult following.[22] Building on her genre work, Skarsten took on guest spots that highlighted her versatility in procedural and supernatural dramas. In 2010, she played Constance in the episode "The Book of Answers" of the Canadian crime series Endgame. The following year, she portrayed Elyse in three episodes of The Listener, including "Jericho," as a key figure in the telepathic paramedic's investigations.[23] From 2012 to 2013, she recurred as Brooke Chandler, a journalist entangled in corporate intrigue, in two episodes of the CW's Beauty and the Beast. Her profile rose further with the lead antagonistic role of Queen Elizabeth I in the CW historical drama Reign from 2015 to 2017, appearing in 35 episodes starting in season 3. Skarsten's portrayal of the ambitious young monarch navigating political intrigue and family rivalries showcased her ability to command scenes in period attire and British accent, earning praise for capturing Elizabeth's strategic intellect and emerging power.[24] In interviews, she highlighted the challenge of transitioning from fantasy to historical roles, noting how it allowed her to explore "vastly different" facets of strength in female leads.[25] Complementing her television work, Skarsten ventured into film with supporting parts that emphasized ensemble dynamics. In the 2012 romantic drama The Vow, she played Rose, a friend providing emotional support amid a story of memory loss and rediscovery.[26] By 2017, she appeared as Leah in Molly's Game, Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut about underground poker rings, portraying a participant in the high-stakes world led by Jessica Chastain's character. This period marked a shift in her career toward strong, multifaceted female characters in collaborative casts, as Skarsten discussed balancing her Canadian upbringing and training with the demands of the U.S. entertainment market.[27] To foster fan connections, she began attending conventions like Fan Expo and Comic-Con around 2013, engaging directly with audiences drawn to her genre roles.[17]Established roles and recent work (2018–present)
Following the conclusion of her role on Reign, Skarsten took on a prominent dual role as Beth Kane and her alter ego Alice in the CW superhero series Batwoman, appearing in 50 episodes from 2019 to 2022. Her portrayal of the psychologically complex character, who grapples with trauma and identity issues stemming from childhood abuse, received critical acclaim for adding depth to the traditional villain archetype and sensitively exploring mental health themes.[12] In a shift toward lighter, romantic fare, Skarsten transitioned to Hallmark Channel productions, beginning with the family drama The Royal Nanny (2022), where she played the titular character Claire, a tutor navigating royal intrigue and budding romance. This was followed by Christmas Island (2023), in which she portrayed event planner Kate Gabriel, who returns to her hometown to save a family lodge amid holiday festivities and unexpected love. Skarsten continued her Hallmark collaborations in 2024 with the mystery Jazz Ramsey: A K-9 Mystery, starring as veterinarian and amateur sleuth Jazz Ramsey, who teams up with a police dog to solve crimes. Later that year, she led The Christmas Charade as librarian Whitney, who goes undercover with an FBI agent to prevent a holiday heist, blending suspense with romantic tension. As of November 2025, no major projects for Skarsten have been announced.[3]Personal life

Skarsten and Robicquet have one child together. As of 2025, Skarsten and Robicquet remain married, maintaining a low-profile partnership focused on mutual support amid her acting career.[31][32]Residence and interests
Skarsten has maintained her primary residence in Los Angeles, California, since returning there in 2008 to pursue acting opportunities after completing her university education in Canada.[33] She purchased a cottage in the Laurel Canyon neighborhood in 2017, reflecting her long-term commitment to the city despite its challenges.[34] Skarsten frequently returns to Toronto, her hometown, where she describes feeling a deep sense of gratitude for being close to loved ones and her pets.[35] Her interests include a continued passion for horses and equestrian activities, influenced by her early involvement in animal care and evident in her attendance at events supporting equine rescues.[36] As an avid animal advocate, Skarsten is a committed vegetarian who has fostered numerous dogs through rescue organizations and adopted at least one, emphasizing her belief in personal responsibility for animal welfare.[37][38] In philanthropy, Skarsten supports cancer research charities, particularly the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), in honor of her father, who died from pancreatic cancer when she was nine years old; she has participated in related auctions and initiatives like Cancer Gets Lost to fund such efforts.[39][40] Following her role in Batwoman, she has actively participated in mental health awareness campaigns, sharing personal connections to the topic alongside co-star Meagan Tandy to promote gratitude and support within the industry.[41] Skarsten's lifestyle reflects her academic background in English literature and classical studies, with a noted enjoyment of reading as a grounding pursuit amid her career. She favors low-key travel, often sharing glimpses of road trips and quiet explorations that allow for reflection and connection with nature.[42]Filmography
