Prior to his screen career, Raphael served four years active duty in the United States Air Force as a combat engineer and later earned a degree in civil engineering from San Diego State University, maintaining a parallel professional life in engineering while pursuing acting and stunts. His work primarily appears in the independent film scene, where his specialized skills in combat choreography and character acting have supported numerous short films and direct-to-video releases.

Early life

Family background and childhood

Richard Alan Raphael was born on March 6, 1966, in New York, USA. He was the first-born child in a family of five, with a Jewish father and a Costa Rican mother. Raphael grew up in New York, where his family frequently traveled to various countries during his childhood. He was known by the nicknames Rich and Darkwolf. Before his senior year of high school, Raphael's family relocated to Rancho Mirage, California.

Education and early training

Richard Raphael's early training encompassed both music and martial arts, beginning at age 8 when he started piano lessons alongside karate classes, pursuits he continued for many years. After completing his military service, he attended San Diego State University, earning a B.S. in civil engineering and graduating in 1994. Despite a demanding academic schedule, Raphael remained active as a member of the university's fencing team. He sustained his martial arts practice throughout his university years and beyond, specializing in Kali—a Filipino martial art emphasizing stick and knife fighting—and affiliating with the Dog Brothers organization under the name "Hellhound."

Military service and engineering career

United States Air Force service

Richard Raphael enlisted in the United States Air Force immediately after high school graduation, seeking to establish his independence. He served as a combat engineer and as a member of the honor guard. His military service consisted of four years on active duty followed by four years in the reserves. During his time in the Air Force, Raphael spent his free weekends performing in the cover band Flashback, where he played keyboards and harmonica while providing lead and backing vocals.

Civil engineering profession

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from San Diego State University in 1994, Richard Raphael began his professional career in the field. He worked as a civil engineer for approximately the next 15 years, during which he was employed in several states across the United States.

Transition to film and entertainment

Entry into independent films

Richard Raphael transitioned from his engineering career to independent films primarily to choreograph stunts and fight sequences, drawing on his martial arts foundation developed during earlier training. His intent was to apply his expertise in a creative capacity behind the scenes, but directors would often give him acting roles after seeing him instructing actors. He began working on independent projects, where this pattern emerged and contributed to his typecasting as "bad guy" characters in subsequent films. According to his IMDb biography, his entry into film began with a desire to use his martial arts knowledge to choreograph stunts and fight sequences for independent movies, but directors would often give him a role of his own after seeing him instructing the actors. This dynamic defined his initial entry into independent cinema.

Acting career

Roles and typecasting

Richard Raphael is predominantly typecast as a "bad guy" in independent films and related projects, with his roles frequently emphasizing antagonistic, rough, or villainous archetypes. His first acting credit was as a mental patient in Breaking Dawn, marking the start of a pattern that has included characters such as a biker, a pirate, a lynch-mob leader, a thug, a bounty hunter, a zombie, a militia survivor, and a demon general. His acting credits total 31 according to IMDb, concentrated in independent cinema and web series where he often plays menacing or undead figures. One of his most prominent roles came in the television series Game Bangers (2013–2014), where he appeared in 13 episodes as Raphael the Paladin and Lego Badguys. In the Moon Ghost series, he portrayed George in Moon Ghost (2023), a Bounty Hunter and Cult Member in Moon Ghost Returns (2024), and Gates in Moon Ghost: Tales from the UnderMoon (2025). Additional representative roles include a zombie and militia survivor in Zombie Apocalypse, a Zombie Killer and Park Ranger in Beyond the Dark (2014), and a zombie in Death Valley: The Revenge of Bloody Bill (2004), which was originally released on DVD before airing on the Sci-Fi Channel. Raphael continues to secure such "bad-guy" parts in independent productions, including post-production projects like The Catholic Ninja (2025) as a Demon General.
