[edit]Stanton attended Broughton Primary and Trinity Academy, Edinburgh.[1] Stanton shares his surname with a famous former Hibs player, Pat Stanton, however he is not related to him.[2]
Career
[edit]Hibernian
[edit]Stanton was a member of the Hibernian under-19 squad.[3] He was promoted to the first team on 28 December 2011 when he was an unused substitute for the match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.[2] He went on to make his first team debut aged 17 as a substitute against Rangers on 28 January 2012.[4][5]
He signed a three-year contract with Hibs in September 2012.[6] Stanton was loaned to Cowdenbeath in January 2013[7] and made his debut in a 1–1 draw against Morton.[8] His stint at Cowdenbeath ended after just two appearances, however, as he suffered a knee injury that required surgery.[9]
Stanton established himself in the Hibs first team during the second half of the 2013–14 season. He won the SPFL young player of the month award for February 2014.[10] In April 2014, Stanton signed a four-year contract extension with Hibs.[11]
On 8 January 2016, Stanton signed for Livingston for the remainder of the 2015–16 Scottish Championship season.
Stanton joined Scottish Championship side Dumbarton on a season-long loan on deadline day in August 2016.[12] He scored his first goals for the club in a 2–2 draw with Ayr United in February 2017[13]
Dundee United
[edit]Stanton joined Championship team Dundee United in July 2017, initially on loan.[14] The move was made permanent on 19 January 2018, with Stanton signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with United.[15]
Phoenix Rising
[edit]Stanton signed with Phoenix Rising on 23 January 2020.[16] After a successful season winning the Western Conference and reaching the USL Championship Final (which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic), Stanton and the club mutually agreed to part ways in December.[17]
Dundalk
[edit]He signed for League of Ireland Premier Division side Dundalk in January 2021.[18] Stanton made his debut in the 2021 President of Ireland's Cup on 12 March 2021, as his side beat Shamrock Rovers on penalties to lift the trophy.[19] He featured in all 6 of the clubs UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers[20] as they were narrowly knocked out 4–3 on aggregate by Vitesse Arnhem in the Third Qualifying Round.[21] He scored his first goal for the club on 27 September in a 2–1 win over Bohemians.[22] Stanton made a total of 40 appearances for the club in all competitions as they finished in 6th place in the league.[20]
Raith Rovers
[edit]On 15 December it was announced that Stanton had returned to Scotland to sign for Scottish Championship side Raith Rovers on a 2+1⁄2-year contract that would commence on 1 January 2022.[23][24]
In January 2025, he joined Scottish League One club Arbroath on loan for the remainder of the season.[25]
International career
[edit]Stanton was selected for the Scotland national under-19 football team in August 2012.[26] He appeared as a substitute in a 1–0 defeat against Germany.[27] He then scored the winning goal in a 2–1 victory against Norway.[28] On 5 March 2014, he made his debut for the Scotland under-21 side in a 2–2 draw against Hungary at Tannadice.[29]

Early life
Samuel Stanton was born on 19 April 1994 in Edinburgh, Scotland.[1][14] He was raised in Edinburgh, the city where he spent his early childhood.[6] Despite sharing a surname with the former Hibernian player Pat Stanton, the two are not related.[15][16][17][18]Youth development
Sam Stanton, born in Edinburgh on 19 April 1994 to a local family, began his organised football career with youth club Hutchison Vale BC, a renowned Edinburgh-based outfit known for developing talents for professional academies.[1][19] In 2006, at the age of 12, Stanton joined the Hibernian youth academy, entering as a promising prospect and advancing through the club's structured development system.[1][3] He progressed steadily through Hibernian's under-age teams, featuring prominently for the under-19 squad in the 2011–12 season. In a Scottish Football League Under-19 match against Motherwell on 30 November 2011, Stanton scored Hibernian's third goal in a 3–3 draw, demonstrating his attacking potential from midfield.[20] Earlier that year, in September 2011, he discussed his positive form with the under-19s in an interview with Hibernian TV, highlighting his growing role within the team alongside teammate Dean Horribine.[21] Stanton's youth performances at Hibernian earned him initial exposure to the reserve side in the lead-up to his breakthrough, though no specific youth awards were recorded prior to his first-team involvement.[3]Club career
Hibernian (2012–2017)
Stanton emerged from the Hibernian youth academy, where he had been developing since age 12, to make his senior debut for the club at the age of 17. He came on as a substitute in a Scottish Premier League match against Rangers on 28 January 2012, during a 4–0 defeat at Ibrox.[22][3] During his time at Hibernian from 2012 to 2017, Stanton made 57 appearances across all competitions and scored 3 goals, gradually establishing himself in the first team amid competition for midfield positions. His breakthrough came in the 2013–14 season, where he became a more regular starter under manager Terry Butcher. Stanton's first goal for the club arrived on 8 February 2014, a 20-yard strike in a Scottish Cup fifth-round tie against Raith Rovers, though Hibernian suffered a 3–2 upset defeat.[3][23] This period highlighted his versatility as an attacking midfielder, contributing to Hibernian's efforts in the Scottish Championship after their 2014 relegation. Limited first-team opportunities at Easter Road prompted Stanton to undertake developmental loans to gain regular senior experience. In January 2013, he joined First Division side Cowdenbeath on a short-term loan until the end of the season, making 2 appearances without scoring; his debut was in a 1–1 draw against Greenock Morton, but the spell was cut short by a knee injury.[24] Stanton returned to form in January 2016 with a loan to Scottish Championship club Livingston until the season's end, where he featured in 13 matches and netted 3 goals, including a composed finish in a 3–1 win over Alloa Athletic; his performances helped Livingston consolidate mid-table stability and allowed him to rebuild confidence after inconsistent play at Hibernian.[25][26] Stanton's final loan of the period was a season-long move to Scottish Championship outfit Dumbarton in August 2016, aimed at providing consistent game time. He made 26 appearances and scored 4 goals, with his first for the club coming in a 2–1 victory over Dunfermline Athletic; despite Dumbarton's relegation play-off struggles, Stanton's creativity and set-piece threat were key in several tight matches, earning praise for his adaptation to a demanding schedule.[27][28] These loans were instrumental in honing his professional skills, preparing him for future challenges while addressing the sporadic minutes at his parent club.Dundee United (2017–2020)
Sam Stanton joined Dundee United on a season-long loan from Hibernian on 15 July 2017.[29] During his initial loan spell in the first half of the 2017–18 season, he made 21 appearances in the Scottish Championship and scored 4 goals. On 19 January 2018, following an impressive start to the campaign, Stanton signed a permanent two-and-a-half-year contract with the club for an undisclosed fee.[30] Over the course of his tenure at Dundee United until January 2020, Stanton featured in 102 matches across all competitions, contributing 12 goals and 16 assists.[6] He established himself as a versatile midfielder, providing creativity and goal threat from midfield, with notable contributions including a brace in one of his early appearances that highlighted his attacking potential. In the 2018–19 season, he appeared in 24 league matches as Dundee United reached the promotion playoffs but fell short against Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Stanton's most impactful period came in the 2019–20 Scottish Championship season, where he played a key role in securing promotion to the Scottish Premiership. Making 17 league appearances and scoring 4 goals, including a decisive early strike in a 1–0 victory over Arbroath that extended United's lead at the top of the table, he helped the team clinch the title amid the COVID-19 pandemic's early curtailment of the season.[31] Dundee United were declared champions on 15 April 2020, earning automatic promotion after four years in the second tier.[32]Phoenix Rising (2020)
In January 2020, Sam Stanton signed with Phoenix Rising FC of the USL Championship for the 2020 season, pending league and federation approval, as he sought to realize his ambition of playing professional soccer in the United States following his departure from Dundee United.[33] The move represented a significant transition from Scottish football, where Stanton had honed his versatile midfield play, to the competitive environment of American second-division soccer.[33] The 2020 USL Championship season was heavily disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with matches postponed until July and restructured into regional groups and a condensed schedule, presenting adaptation challenges for international players like Stanton adjusting to new tactical demands and environmental factors. Despite these hurdles, Stanton quickly integrated into the squad, logging 1,312 minutes across 18 appearances while scoring three goals and providing one assist.[7] His contributions were notable in key fixtures, including his first goal for the club on September 11 against San Antonio FC and a brace in a 4-1 victory over LA Galaxy II on October 3, which helped secure Phoenix's position in the playoffs.[7] Stanton's impact extended into the postseason, where he started all four matches as Phoenix Rising advanced through the playoffs, defeating Reno 1868 FC on penalties in the semi-final and El Paso Locomotive FC on penalties in the final to win the Western Conference title, before losing the USL Championship Final to Tampa Bay Rowdies.[7] In December 2020, the club and Stanton mutually agreed to part ways, with Phoenix opting not to exercise the contract extension due to the anticipated delayed start of the 2021 season amid ongoing COVID-19 uncertainties, allowing him to return to Scotland for immediate playing opportunities and career progression.[7]Dundalk (2021)
In January 2021, Sam Stanton joined Dundalk from Phoenix Rising in the USL Championship, signing a one-year contract ahead of the League of Ireland Premier Division season. The 26-year-old Scottish midfielder brought experience from his time abroad, aiming to bolster Dundalk's midfield options under manager Filippo Giovagnoli.[34][35] Stanton's debut came in the 2021 President's Cup final against Shamrock Rovers on 12 March at Tallaght Stadium, where he started in central midfield. He played 105 minutes, adapting after an initial settling period to display strong ball control, precise passing, and effective distribution that helped maintain Dundalk's composure during the 1-1 draw. Substituted during extra time, his contributions were part of a cohesive team effort that led to a 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory, securing Dundalk's first silverware of the season and marking Stanton's immediate impact in Irish football.[36][37] In the League of Ireland Premier Division, Stanton featured in 29 appearances, primarily as a substitute in his early months before earning more starts, and scored his sole goal for the club on 27 September—a stunning left-footed strike from a tight angle that opened the scoring in a 2-1 home win over Bohemians. His performances contributed to Dundalk's mid-table finish, with the team accumulating 48 points in sixth place, though injuries and squad rotation limited his overall influence. He also made four appearances in the FAI Cup, reaching the quarter-finals before a penalty shoot-out exit to Treaty United. Across all competitions, Stanton recorded 33 appearances and one goal.[38][39][40] Stanton's contract expired at the end of the 2021 season, leading to his departure as a free agent in December after Dundalk opted not to renew amid squad rebuilding.[41]Raith Rovers (2022–2025)
In January 2022, Sam Stanton returned to Scottish football by signing a short-term deal with Scottish Championship side Raith Rovers, initially on a two-and-a-half-year contract that took effect from December 2021. This move followed his spells abroad in the United States and Ireland, bringing versatility to Raith's midfield. The contract was extended multiple times, including a two-year renewal in December 2023 that secured his stay until June 2026.[42][43] Stanton's contributions were pivotal in Raith's competitive campaigns in the Scottish Championship. In the 2022–23 season, he made 43 appearances and scored 6 goals, helping the team secure third place and a spot in the promotion playoffs, where they fell to Partick Thistle in the semi-finals. The following 2023–24 season saw him feature in another 43 matches with 8 goals, including key strikes in league wins, as Raith topped the table for much of the year before reaching the Premiership playoff final, only to lose to Ross County. Overall, across all competitions from 2021–22 to early 2024–25, Stanton recorded 127 appearances and 16 goals for Raith, establishing himself as a reliable playmaker in their promotion pushes.[44][45][46] Seeking more regular minutes amid reduced opportunities at Raith in the 2024–25 season—where he had made 14 appearances and scored once—Stanton joined League One club Arbroath on loan in January 2025 until the season's end. During this spell, he adapted quickly to the lower tier, making 16 appearances and scoring 3 goals, helping Arbroath secure the league title and promotion to the Scottish Championship.[47][48][49][50] Stanton departed Raith permanently via transfer in the summer of 2025.[50]St Johnstone (2025–present)
On 17 June 2025, Sam Stanton joined St Johnstone from Raith Rovers on a free transfer, signing a one-year contract until 31 May 2026.[51][1][50] In the 2025–26 Scottish Championship season, Stanton made his debut for St Johnstone in the League Cup, where he featured in two matches and scored one goal. As of November 16, 2025, he had accumulated six appearances in the Championship, totaling approximately 160 minutes played, including one goal.[4] His limited minutes have primarily come as a substitute, reflecting a gradual integration into the squad following a brief loan spell at Arbroath earlier in 2025 to build match fitness, though he started and scored in a 4–3 league win over Queen's Park on 15 November 2025, helping St Johnstone extend their lead at the top of the table. Under manager Simo Valakari, appointed in October 2024, Stanton has faced competition for a starting central midfield role. Valakari has praised Stanton's experience but emphasized the need for consistent performances to earn regular selection.[52][53] Stanton's adaptation to St Johnstone's Championship campaign has been measured, with his contributions highlighted in cup ties and the recent league goal amid the team's push for promotion. No major injuries have been reported, though his form has been a point of focus for squad rotation. With the contract running through the 2025–26 season, his future prospects remain tied to demonstrating reliability in Valakari's system as the campaign progresses.[1][53]International career
Youth levels
Sam Stanton earned two caps for the Scotland under-18 team in 2012 while progressing through the Hibernian youth academy.[54] He made his debut for the Scotland under-19 team on 14 August 2012, appearing as a substitute in a 0–1 friendly defeat to Germany at Falkirk Stadium, where he competed in central midfield.[55][56][57] Stanton added two more under-19 caps in 2013, scoring one goal as a midfielder during qualifying matches.[55] In 2014, following continued impressive displays for Hibernian, Stanton received his sole under-21 call-up and debuted as a substitute in a 2–2 friendly draw against Hungary on 5 March.[58][59]Senior level
Sam Stanton has not earned any senior international caps for the Scotland national football team as of November 2025.[60][58] Despite progressing through Scotland's youth international ranks, Stanton has not received a call-up to the senior squad.[58] The midfield positions in the Scotland senior team remain highly competitive, dominated by established players such as John McGinn and [Lewis Ferguson](/page/Lewis Ferguson).[61] Stanton's performances in the 2025–26 Scottish Championship season with St Johnstone could potentially open opportunities for future consideration, though at age 31, such prospects depend on consistent standout contributions.[1]Statistics and legacy
