Schleswig is a city in Crawford County, Iowa, United States. The population was 830 at the time of the 2020 census.
Schleswig was laid out in 1899. The city was named after the Schleswig in Germany and Denmark, from which the original settlers came.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.31 square miles (3.39 km2), of which 1.30 square miles (3.37 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.
As of the census of 2020, there were 830 people, 363 households, and 239 families residing in the city. The population density was 669.7 inhabitants per square mile (258.6/km2). There were 411 housing units at an average density of 331.6 per square mile (128.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 84.7% White, 0.2% Black or African American, 0.6% Native American, 1.0% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 7.0% from other races and 6.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino persons of any race comprised 12.8% of the population.
Of the 363 households, 27.0% of which had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were married couples living together, 6.1% were cohabitating couples, 23.1% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present and 20.1% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present. 34.2% of all households were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, 14.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
The median age in the city was 45.3 years. 23.6% of the residents were under the age of 20; 6.5% were between the ages of 20 and 24; 19.5% were from 25 and 44; 27.0% were from 45 and 64; and 23.4% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.7% male and 49.3% female.
