Early life and education

Childhood and family

Taaruk Raina was born on September 29, 1994, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.[1] He is the son of Sanjay Raina, a Kashmiri Pandit chef and entrepreneur known for promoting traditional Kashmiri Pandit cuisine through his Gurugram-based company, Mealability The Flavour Of Kashmir, which he founded in 2015.[6][7] Sanjay Raina, who grew up in Srinagar and later studied hotel management in Delhi, also ventured into the music industry in the 1990s, producing albums for Magnasound, which influenced his son's early exposure to music.[6] Raina's childhood was marked by a strong connection to music, as he began singing at the age of six and participated in his school choir.[8] He grew up listening to diverse genres, including rock, rap, heavy metal, and ghazals, reflecting the musical environment fostered by his family.[8] His father has credited Raina with carrying forward the family's musical legacy, describing it as passing the "singing baton."[6]

Education

Raina was raised in Delhi, India, where he completed his schooling. During this time, he developed an early interest in music, starting to sing at the age of six and participating in school choirs and bands.[8][9] After finishing junior college in Delhi, Raina moved to Australia to pursue higher education. He earned a bachelor's degree in cultural studies and music from Monash University in Melbourne, where he continued nurturing his passion for music by singing in churches.[10][11][12][9] His studies in cultural studies and music provided a foundation that blended his artistic interests, influencing his later career in acting, songwriting, and performance.[11][13]

Professional career

Industry entry and theatre

Raina's entry into the entertainment industry began with theatre, where he honed his acting skills through live performances prior to venturing into film production. In a 2023 interview, he described starting his professional journey on stage, emphasizing how theatre's demanding immediacy shaped his approach to character work and audience interaction.[8] This foundational experience in theatre provided him with essential training in improvisation and emotional delivery. In 2015, Raina transitioned into the film industry by joining Yash Raj Films as an assistant director to Aditya Chopra on the romantic comedy Befikre, starring Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor. This role, which spanned approximately a year and a half, immersed him in the logistics of Bollywood filmmaking, from script breakdowns to on-set coordination, and exposed him to high-profile production environments.[8] He has highlighted this period as a pivotal learning phase, where observing lead actors like Singh taught him professional discipline and set etiquette, bridging his theatre background to cinematic storytelling.[14] Following his assistance on Befikre, Raina returned to theatre with prominent roles that showcased his versatility in musical and dramatic formats. His most notable stage credit came in 2018 with the Indian adaptation of Disney's Aladdin, a Broadway-style musical directed by Shruti Sharma, which infused the classic tale with local cultural elements while retaining its magical essence.[15] Raina alternated in the lead role of Aladdin alongside Siddharth Menon, performing high-energy song-and-dance sequences to live audiences across Mumbai and other cities, including a run at the National Centre for the Performing Arts.[16] The production, featuring a cast that included Mantra as the Genie and Vikrant Chaturvedi as the Sultan, marked a significant milestone in Indian theatre's embrace of Western musicals, running for multiple shows and earning praise for its vibrant choreography and sets.[17] Raina's theatre involvement extended beyond Aladdin, as he continued to take on challenging stage roles that complemented his growing screen presence. In early 2025, he starred in External Affairs, a 360-degree immersive play directed by Adhaar Khurana, where he portrayed a key character opposite Prajakta Koli, navigating rapid character switches in a format that tested ensemble dynamics and audience engagement.[18] By April 2025, he was also performing in an unnamed production that had completed 45 shows, underscoring his ongoing commitment to theatre's live energy amid his expanding film and digital career.[19] These experiences reinforced theatre's role in his development, providing a grounding contrast to scripted shoots and allowing him to explore multifaceted narratives in real time.

Television hosting and acting debut

Raina made his television debut in 2017 as the co-host of the singing reality competition Dil Hai Hindustani season 2 on Star Plus, alongside Prit Kamani of the YouTube duo Jumbo Jutts.[1] The bilingual show, which encouraged cross-border participation between India and Pakistan, highlighted emerging musical talents through performances of Hindi, regional, and international songs, with judges including Sunidhi Chauhan, Pritam Chakraborty, and Badshah.[20] Raina's energetic on-stage presence and improvisational skills, honed from his theatre background and online content creation, helped him connect with audiences, earning praise for injecting youthful humor into the high-stakes format.[11] Following his hosting success, Raina transitioned to acting, marking his on-screen debut in 2018 with the comedy film High Jack, directed by Akarsh Khurana. In the movie, he portrayed Parth, a quirky supporting character in a road-trip narrative involving friends on a cannabis-fueled adventure across Himachal Pradesh. The role allowed Raina to showcase his comedic timing, and received positive feedback for his natural portrayal amid an ensemble cast including Sonnalli Seygall.[21] This debut paved the way for further opportunities in both film and digital platforms, blending Raina's multifaceted talents in performance and music, as he contributed to the film's soundtrack with vocals on the track "Happy Ending."

Digital media and music expansion

Raina's foray into digital media began with his lead role as Anmol Malhotra in the Netflix romantic comedy series Mismatched (2020–2024), where he starred opposite Prajakta Koli across three seasons, portraying a visually impaired aspiring chef navigating love and disability in a modern context. The series, which explored generational clashes in modern relationships, marked his transition from television and theatre to over-the-top (OTT) platforms, earning him widespread recognition among younger audiences for his nuanced performance. Building on this success, he appeared in The Broken News (2022) on ZEE5 as a journalist, delving into the ethical dilemmas of media sensationalism. His OTT portfolio expanded further with supporting roles in Jugaadistan on Amazon Prime Video, Pawan & Pooja on MX Player, and the YouTube Original Aryan & Meera, showcasing his versatility in digital storytelling formats.[22] In 2025, Raina took on prominent leads in high-profile series, including The Waking of a Nation on SonyLIV, where he played Kanti, a lawyer unraveling the conspiracy behind the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, a role that demanded intense historical research and emotional depth.[23] He also featured as Sunny in Rangeen on Amazon Prime Video, contributing to soundtracks alongside his acting.[12] These projects highlighted his growing presence across platforms like Netflix, SonyLIV, and Prime Video, where he credited OTT for providing diverse opportunities that reshaped his career trajectory.[24] Parallel to his digital acting expansion, Raina pursued music as a singer, songwriter, and composer, viewing it as his "first love" and a vulnerable extension of his artistic identity.[25] His music journey started experimentally but evolved into indie pop with emotional, introspective themes often described as "sadboi pop," drawing from personal experiences like childhood nostalgia.[26] A pivotal release was "Kho Gaye" from Mismatched Season 2 (2022), co-composed with Himonshu Parikh and members of The Yellow Diary, which amassed millions of views on YouTube and charted on Apple Music's Top 100 in India.[27] This soundtrack success bridged his acting and music worlds, leading to independent singles like "Narazi" (2023), a heartfelt track about loss and reconciliation that surpassed 10 million streams on Spotify.[26][28] Raina's music output accelerated in 2024 with releases such as "Lost & Found" (August), a collaboration with Prajakta Koli and Charan Singh Pathania produced by Starving Artist Films, emphasizing themes of rediscovery through acoustic arrangements; "Tu Hi Bata De"; and "Majboor" (November), a personal reflection on inner conflict that he described as a "piece of himself."[3][29] He also contributed "Do Din Ke Baad" to Mismatched Season 3 (December).[30] In 2025, he debuted Stay Vol. 1 (September), an EP featuring tracks like "Ruk Ja" and "Ratiyaan," self-produced and released on platforms including YouTube and Apple Music.[31] These works, distributed via his YouTube channel (@taaruk, with over 8,000 subscribers hosting official music videos), underscored his shift toward self-directed digital distribution.[32] His music expansion included live performances, such as his debut show at AntiSocial Mumbai in March 2025, where he engaged a full house of around 500 with high-energy sets blending neon visuals and fan sing-alongs, solidifying his status as an emerging indie voice.[33][26] Raina has cited influences from diverse artists, using music to narrate personal stories and complement his on-screen vulnerability.[34] This dual expansion into OTT and music has positioned him as a multi-hyphenate artist, with nominations like Best Supporting Actor for Mismatched Season 3 at the 2025 NEXA Indian Streaming Academy Awards.[35]
