Key Information
Brytavious Lakeith Chambers (born September 20, 1996)[2] known professionally as Tay Keith, is an American record producer.[3] He is best known for co-producing Travis Scott's 2018 single "Sicko Mode", which peaked atop the Billboard Hot 100, as well as Drake's "Nonstop", BlocBoy JB's "Look Alive", and Eminem’s "Not Alike" which peaked at numbers two, five, and twenty-four on the chart, respectively. His 2023 single, "Pound Town" (with Sexyy Red) marked his first entry on the chart as a lead artist.[4][5]
On December 15, 2018, Tay Keith earned his bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[6] He was nominated for Best Rap Song for his work on "Sicko Mode" at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. He is signed to publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music and is a BMI member.
Early life
[edit]Keith was born in South Memphis, Tennessee.[7]
When he was around fourteen, he began to make music and publish it to YouTube and DatPiff. He also had a piano which he used to make songs and remake popular songs. One of the songs he managed to remake was Lil Wayne's "Lollipop".[8]
Keith met fellow American rapper BlocBoy JB when he was fourteen, after he moved to East Memphis. The two began making music together shortly afterward.[6]
Career
[edit]In 2015, Keith began working with rapper Blac Youngsta on his mixtape, Fuck Everybody, for which he produced the single "Lil Bitch".[citation needed]
Keith gained mainstream success in 2018 through producing BlocBoy JB's "Rover" (later remixed to "Rover 2.0" featuring 21 Savage), "Shoot" and "Look Alive" featuring Drake, Drake's "Nonstop", Travis Scott's "Sicko Mode", Eminem's "Not Alike" featuring Royce da 5'9, and Lil Baby and Gunna's "Never Recover" featuring Drake.[4][5] In 2019, Keith produced a bonus track, "Before I Let Go", on Beyoncé's Homecoming: The Live Album.[9] In 2020, he produced "Rain", a single by Aitch featuring AJ Tracey.[10] Keith is known for the distinctive producer tag "Tay Keith, fuck these niggas up!"; he has also used the tag "Tay Keith is too hard".[11]
Personal life
[edit]Keith graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 2018.[12]

Tay Keith
View on GrokipediaEarly life
Childhood in Memphis
Brytavious Lakeith Chambers, known professionally as Tay Keith, was born on September 20, 1996, in South Memphis, Tennessee, and spent his formative years immersed in the city's vibrant yet challenging hip-hop culture. Raised in a working-class environment marked by economic hardships, Keith navigated a peripatetic childhood across several Memphis neighborhoods, including East Memphis, Orange Mound, and eventually Raleigh in North Memphis. These areas, known for their deep ties to Southern rap traditions, shaped his early worldview, as he later reflected on growing up "in the hood" without financial stability or privileges.[16][17][18] Keith's family life was equally transitional; he initially lived with his mother before moving in with his father during high school, a shift that underscored the instability of his upbringing. As the youngest of five siblings—including two brothers who pursued rapping—Keith was the first in his family to focus on music production, though his household frequently played Memphis rap artists, fostering an early auditory environment rich with local sounds. He attended White Station High School, where he connected with peers influenced by the city's musical legacy, such as a classmate who was the daughter of pioneering rapper Playa Fly. This period exposed him to the grit of South Memphis life, including attendance at Lincoln Elementary, reinforcing his roots in a community where hip-hop served as both entertainment and escape.[17][6] From a young age, Keith's interest in music manifested through informal experimentation, blending family influences like Three 6 Mafia and 8Ball & MJG with broader Southern rap. By age 13 or 14, he began recording rudimentary tracks using a Rock Band microphone, uploading them to platforms like YouTube and DatPiff, initially as a rapper before pivoting to beat-making. Self-taught on software like Mixcraft—starting with remakes of tracks such as Lil Wayne's "Lollipop"—Keith drew mentorship from local producers like Drumma Boy and DJ Squeeky, who helped refine his skills amid Memphis's competitive scene. These early efforts, born from limited resources in a city synonymous with crunk and trap innovation, laid the groundwork for his production style while highlighting the resilience required to pursue music in such circumstances.[17][16]Education
Tay Keith, born Brytavious Lakeith Chambers, attended White Station High School in Memphis, Tennessee, transferring there during his junior year. At White Station, a public magnet school known for its strong academic programs, he began developing his interest in music production while balancing his studies. He graduated with honors, forming early connections in the local music scene that would influence his career.[17][19] Following high school, Keith enrolled at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, pursuing a bachelor's degree through the University College. He focused on integrated studies with an emphasis in media management, a program that equipped him with knowledge of music industry essentials such as royalties, copyrights, and business operations. To manage his burgeoning production career, Keith structured his schedule around classes held Monday through Thursday, dedicating weekends to travel and collaborations in Memphis and beyond.[17][20][14] Keith earned his degree on December 15, 2018, the same year he achieved major breakthroughs in music production, including a Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit. His commitment to completing his education amid professional success was highlighted by MTSU, where he later received recognition as an outstanding alumnus in 2022 and was appointed an honorary professor in the College of Media and Entertainment in 2021. This academic foundation has informed his approach to the music business, enabling him to navigate contracts and industry dynamics effectively.[20][7][14][9]Career
Early career and local collaborations
Tay Keith, born Brytavious Lakeith Chambers, began his music career in Memphis, Tennessee, around the age of 13 or 14, initially as a rapper before transitioning to production.[17] He started by recording freestyles using a Rock Band microphone and uploading them to platforms like YouTube and DatPiff, later experimenting with beat-making software such as Mixcraft and FL Studio on a basic setup of a keyboard and computer.[21][17] His early influences included Memphis rap pioneers like Three 6 Mafia, Playa Fly, and 8Ball & MJG, as well as Southern artists such as Ludacris and Yo Gotti; he honed his skills by remaking tracks like Lil Wayne's "Lollipop."[17] Seeking guidance, Keith connected with local mentors including producer Drumma Boy, whom he met at an Atlanta showcase, along with Memphis Track Boy and Lil Lody.[17] In his mid-teens, Keith immersed himself in Memphis's vibrant hip-hop scene, uploading type beats on YouTube—such as "Yo Gotti type beats" and "Future type beats"—which earned him modest income through Google AdSense, around $100 per month.[22] He began collaborating with emerging local artists in informal neighborhood settings, often in garages where he produced beats on the spot while friends freestyled.[23] A key early partnership formed with childhood friend BlocBoy JB, with whom he grew up in the Raleigh neighborhood and co-developed skills starting in their early teens; their sessions laid the foundation for tracks like the 2017 single "Shoot," which gained viral attention through its accompanying dance.[23][21] Keith described these early days as grassroots: "We used to have everybody in the neighborhood record their music in the garage … [BlocBoy] used to be freestyling to the beat the whole time while I’m making it."[23] Keith's production style, characterized by heavy 808 bass, crisp hi-hats, and a signature "bounce" rooted in Memphis trap, first took shape through collaborations with artists like Blac Youngsta and Moneybagg Yo, whom he credited with defining his sound.[17] For Blac Youngsta, he produced "Whole Life" (which contributed to the artist's CMG signing), multiple beats on the 2016 mixtape Young and Reckless, and "Lil Bitch" from the Fuck Everybody mixtape that same year.[17] With Moneybagg Yo, Keith crafted tracks including "Gang Gang" featuring Yo Gotti in 2016, as well as contributions to albums like Heartless (2017) and Federal 3X.[13][17] He also worked with Key Glock on "Russian Cream" (2018, over 5 million streams on YouTube and SoundCloud) and Juicy J on "Broke Niggaz," further embedding his beats in the local ecosystem before national exposure.[22] These projects, often distributed via mixtapes and SoundCloud, helped Keith build a regional reputation while studying at Middle Tennessee State University.[22]2018 breakthrough
In 2018, Tay Keith transitioned from a regional Memphis producer to a major figure in hip-hop production, largely through high-profile collaborations with established artists. His breakthrough began with the co-production of "Look Alive" by BlocBoy JB featuring Drake, released in February as part of BlocBoy JB's debut mixtape Simi Valley. The track, built on Keith's signature booming bass and sharp hi-hats, debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Streaming Songs chart and peaked at number 5 on the Hot 100, marking his first major national hit and introducing his sound to a broader audience.[24] Keith's momentum continued with productions for Drake's double album Scorpion, released in June. He solely produced "Nonstop," a high-energy track that debuted at number 2 on the Hot 100 and became one of the album's standout singles, showcasing Keith's ability to craft beats that complemented Drake's introspective yet assertive flow. Later that year, Keith co-produced "Sicko Mode" for Travis Scott's Astroworld, contributing the explosive beat switch that propelled the song to number 1 on the Hot 100 for one week in December, where it remained a chart fixture for 32 weeks. These three tracks formed a trifecta of top-10 Hot 100 hits, all tailored to street-oriented hip-hop while achieving pop crossover success.[25] By year's end, Keith had production credits on three Billboard Hot 100 top-10 hits, solidifying his rapid ascent and earning recognition as one of 2018's top hip-hop producers. His work emphasized the Memphis trap influence—characterized by heavy 808s and dynamic shifts—while adapting to mainstream demands, leading to widespread acclaim for revitalizing the region's sound on a global stage.[25][26]2019–2022: Major projects and solo debut
In 2019, Tay Keith continued to expand his production footprint across hip-hop and R&B, collaborating with high-profile artists on standout tracks. He produced the bonus track "Before I Let Go" for Beyoncé's Homecoming: The Live Album, reimagining Frankie Beverly and Maze's classic with a modern trap bounce that incorporated his signature hi-hat patterns and vocal tag, earning praise for blending New Orleans bounce influences with contemporary production.[27] That same year, Keith handled beats for Nav's "Amazing" featuring Future from the deluxe edition of Bad Habits, where the thumping rhythm underscored verses about opulent lifestyles.[28] He also contributed to Future's "100 Shooters" with Meek Mill and Doe Boy, delivering a hard-hitting trap backdrop that highlighted the artists' boasts over relentless percussion.[29] Keith marked his entry into rap as a lead artist with the release of his debut mixtape Fuxk These Niggas Up 2 in September 2019, a nine-track project that showcased his self-produced beats alongside features from Memphis rappers like Lil Juice and others, emphasizing aggressive trap energy with tracks like "U Gon Die" and "Foreign Mafia."[30] Building on his producer tag's cultural cachet, the mixtape served as an extension of his sound, blending booming 808s and rapid hi-hats to assert his dual role in the industry. The year 2020 saw Keith diversifying into international collaborations, producing "Rain" for British rappers Aitch and AJ Tracey, a track that fused UK drill elements with his Memphis trap style, achieving notable streams and radio play upon its March release.[31] He followed with two more personal projects: the collaborative album Warning Shots with Lil Juice in November, featuring seven tracks like "Glock Out" and "Countdown" that highlighted raw street narratives over his punchy drums; and Fxck the Cash Up later that year, another self-led effort reinforcing his growing catalog as an artist.[32] These releases underscored Keith's shift toward balancing production with rapping, often self-producing to maintain creative control. By 2021 and into 2022, Keith's productions powered major commercial successes, including contributions to Lil Baby's My Turn deluxe edition with tracks emphasizing his kinetic rhythms.[33] His work peaked with the November 2022 collaborative album Her Loss by Drake and 21 Savage, where he co-produced key cuts like "Rich Flex," "Major Distribution," and "Broke Boys," infusing the project with layered samples and his distinctive bounce that helped the album debut at number one on the Billboard 200.[6] That year, Keith also founded his independent label Drumatized in Memphis, securing a licensing deal with Warner Records to nurture emerging talent while solidifying his executive presence.[34]2023–present: Recent works and recognition
In 2023, Tay Keith continued his streak of high-profile productions, notably collaborating with rapper Sexyy Red on the breakout single "Pound Town," released in January, which propelled her to mainstream prominence with its infectious, bass-heavy beat.[35] The track spawned the Pound Town EP and a sequel, Pound Town 2, featuring Nicki Minaj, further solidifying Keith's influence in the rising wave of female-led hip-hop anthems. Later that year, he executive produced and contributed beats to Yung n Turnt, a collaborative album with Lil Darius released on November 7, blending Memphis trap elements with raw Southern rap energy across 14 tracks.[36] By 2024, Keith's work with Drake intensified during the rapper's high-stakes feud era, co-producing tracks on the surprise album Family Matters, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 and amassed millions of streams.[37] He also lent his signature sound to Megan Thee Stallion's album MEGAN, contributing to its chart-topping success and earning subsequent acclaim for elevating aggressive, sample-driven production. Into 2025, Keith released singles such as "The Forum" featuring BlocBoy JB and "Love Latto," while relocating production efforts to Nashville to craft what he described as his most ambitious records yet, focusing on innovative hip-hop and R&B fusions. In March 2025, he produced a single for Jack Harlow featuring Doja Cat.[38][39][40] Keith's recognition peaked during this period, winning BMI's R&B/Hip-Hop Producer of the Year award for the third time in 2023, honored for hits including Drake's "Jimmy Cooks," and repeating the feat in 2024.[41] In 2025, he received BMI's R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter of the Year for contributions to tracks like Drake's "First Person Shooter" and Travis Scott's "MELTDOWN," alongside a Gold Derby Music Award for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album shared for MEGAN.[42][12] His broader impact was affirmed by inclusion on Forbes' 30 Under 30 Music list for 2025, highlighting his entrepreneurial ventures in music technology and community initiatives. Keith expanded his philanthropy that year, partnering with the American Cancer Society through his Drumatized Cares foundation to launch the Music for Healing program, providing arts education and wellness support for cancer patients and underserved youth in Memphis and Nashville.[43][44]Artistry
Production style
Tay Keith's production style is deeply rooted in the Memphis trap sound, characterized by heavy 808 bass lines, sharp hi-hats, and triplet flows that evoke the raw energy of Southern hip-hop.[45][6] He often begins beats with minor chords and drums, building layers of percussion and minimalistic melodies to create a propulsive, gritty texture that shakes rooms and drives club anthems.[6] This approach draws from Memphis rap pioneers like Three 6 Mafia, incorporating booming bass and a lo-fi rattle that filters contemporary artists through a regional lens.[45][46] A signature element of his work is the iconic producer tag, typically "Tay Keith, fuck these niggas up!" or variations like "Tay Keith is too hard," which he has used since 2017 to brand his tracks.[45][47] Keith employs FL Studio for rapid creation, often completing beats in 15-20 minutes by prioritizing rhythm and bounce, with crisp snares and triple-tom hi-hats providing a breezy yet menacing foundation.[6] He frequently samples and replays keys for added texture, as in his remix of Beyoncé's "Before I Let Go," blending uptempo bounce with nostalgic elements to achieve mainstream virality.[46][47] Keith's versatility allows him to adapt across genres, from hip-hop to R&B and UK rap, while maintaining a focus on bass-driven, artist-centric production that fosters genuine collaborations.[48] He works in isolated creative zones or group sessions, reusing beats until they fit the right voice, emphasizing simplicity in drums amid layered arrangements to ensure tracks resonate in diverse settings like clubs, cars, or social media snippets.[45][48] This method has helped mainstream the modern Memphis sound, unifying regional factions through high-impact, rhythmic instrumentals.[46]Influences
Tay Keith's musical influences are deeply rooted in the Memphis hip-hop scene, where he grew up immersed in the sounds of local pioneers. As a teenager, he was particularly inspired by Three 6 Mafia, whose innovative crunk and horrorcore elements shaped his early understanding of trap production and rhythmic complexity.[17] He has also credited artists like Yo Gotti, Young Dolph, and Don Trip for influencing his approach to hard-hitting Southern beats, drawing from mixtapes such as Gotti's Cocaine Music series and Dolph's Blue Magic.[16] Among producers, Keith has looked up to Memphis native Drumma Boy, admiring his work with artists like Gucci Mane and Yo Gotti as a blueprint for regional success and mentorship.[17] He received early guidance from Drumma Boy and other local figures like Memphis Track Boy and Lil Lody, who helped refine his skills during his formative years.[17] Broader inspirations include Jeezy's collaborators D. Rich and Shawty Redd, whose trap-infused productions on tracks like those from Jeezy's early albums captured Keith's attention and motivated his pivot to beat-making.[49] Keith's entry into production was sparked by remaking notable hits, such as the piano-driven beat of Lil Wayne's "Lollipop" produced by Jim Jonsin, which he practiced on a keyboard and later emulated in software like Fruity Loops.[49][17] On a national scale, he has expressed admiration for veteran producers including Dr. Dre for his empire-building and sonic innovation, as well as Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, and Mannie Fresh, whose eclectic styles from the early 2000s informed his blend of melody and percussion.[49] These influences converge in Keith's signature sound, emphasizing crisp snares, rolling hi-hats, and bass-heavy foundations that pay homage to Southern rap traditions while incorporating global appeal.[16]Personal life
