Faculty buildings

The Coat of Arms features a lion on a blue background — the lion being the historical emblem of the western Ukrainian lands — symbolizing the regional identity of the University as an educational and scientific institution.

In its right paw, the lion holds a three-branched candelabrum, a symbol of education and science, which also appears on the seal of the Secret Ukrainian University that operated in Lviv from 1921 to 1925.

The emblem is framed within a decorative shield that includes the Ukrainian trident and the inscription “1661” — the year of the founding of the first Jesuit College, and therefore, the origin of the University.

Beneath the shield is a ribbon bearing the motto inscribed on the façade of the University’s main building: “Patriae decori civibus educandis” (“To educate citizens for the glory of the Fatherland”).

The Great Coat of Arms of the University features a shield flanked by two female figures:
on the right – Athena, the allegory of science and wisdom;
on the left – the allegory of vigilance (a woman holding a mirror into which a serpent gazes).
Beneath the shield lies an open book bearing the motto “Patriae decori civibus educandis” (“To educate citizens for the glory of the Fatherland”).

Symbolics

The Astronomical Observatory is a research institution of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. It is one of the oldest observatories in Eastern Europe, founded in 1771.
