Urbana, Iowa

Urbana is a city in Benton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,554 at the time of the 2020 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Urbana (previously known as Hoosier Point and Marysville) was laid out in 1847.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.20 square miles (5.70 km2), all land.

Urbana is roughly midway between Cedar Rapids and Waterloo. Interstate 380 and Iowa Highway 150 intersect here.

As of the census of 2020, there were 1,554 people, 554 households, and 417 families residing in the city. The population density was 763.2 inhabitants per square mile (294.7/km2). There were 574 housing units at an average density of 281.9 per square mile (108.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.4% White, 0.5% Black or African American, 0.0% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino persons of any race comprised 1.2% of the population.

Of the 554 households, 45.5% of which had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.1% were married couples living together, 9.4% were cohabitating couples, 14.3% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present and 14.3% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present. 24.7% of all households were non-families. 17.9% of all households were made up of individuals, 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.

The median age in the city was 34.6 years. 33.1% of the residents were under the age of 20; 4.2% were between the ages of 20 and 24; 28.2% were from 25 and 44; 24.6% were from 45 and 64; and 9.9% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.4% male and 48.6% female.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,458 people, 520 households, and 412 families living in the city. The population density was 662.7 inhabitants per square mile (255.9/km2). There were 543 housing units at an average density of 246.8 per square mile (95.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.5% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.0% of the population.
