Debut and breakthrough films
Vatsan Chakravarthy made his acting debut in the 2010 Tamil drama film Aridhu Aridhu, directed by K. R. Mathivanan, where he portrayed a supporting role at the age of 19.[7][3] The film, produced under JK Creations and shot in Chennai and Australia, explored themes of terrorism and communal violence but received mixed reviews and underperformed commercially.[7] His breakthrough came the following year with the role of Ramesh, a bus passenger pursuing a fellow traveler, in the 2011 road drama Engaeyum Eppothum, directed by M. Saravanan and produced by Fox Star Studios in association with A. R. Murugadoss.[7][3] This performance as a teenager earned him his first major critical notice, contributing to the film's acclaim for its realistic portrayal of human connections; it won awards at the Edison, Vijay, and South Filmfare Awards.[7] Chakravarthy continued with supporting roles, including as Praveen in the 2013 action thriller Vathikuchi, another A. R. Murugadoss production directed by P. Kinslin, which received average reviews for its fast-paced narrative.[7] That same year, he secured his first lead role as James in the romantic drama Apple Penne, directed by R. K. Kalaimani and co-starring Iswarya Menon and Roja, though the film also garnered mixed audience reception.[7][3] In 2014, Chakravarthy took a health break after contracting dengue fever, which halted his early career momentum and led to a two-year absence from the industry.[7][3]Notable roles and performances
Following his breakthrough in Tamil cinema, Vatsan Chakravarthy took on supporting roles that showcased his growing range in action-oriented narratives. In the 2016 action thriller Tharkappu, directed by R.P. Ravi, he portrayed Vino, a key supporting character navigating the film's themes of corruption and police encounters, marking a significant step in his mid-career progression. Vatsan's antagonist turn as Sethu, a menacing gangster and inmate, in the 2022 prison drama Kuruthi Aattam highlighted his commitment to character authenticity. To embody the role, he underwent a rigorous physical transformation, gaining approximately 20 kilograms over 120 days of disciplined training and nutrition to achieve a muscular, imposing physique that aligned with the character's brutal demeanor.[8] This preparation, which included growing out his hair and performing intense action sequences despite injuries, earned praise from industry figures like director Lokesh Kanagaraj, who commended his impressive screen presence in promotional stills, and filmmaker Madonne Ashwin, who described the role as particularly strong.[9] Audience reception also appreciated his realistic, no-nonsense portrayal, contributing to the film's exploration of vengeance and redemption.[8] In Lokesh Kanagaraj's 2019 action blockbuster Kaithi, Vatsan played Ajay, a college student caught in the high-stakes ensemble, where his performance added to the film's taut dynamics of survival and camaraderie amid a drug cartel raid.[10] His subtle integration into the group's tense interactions helped amplify the narrative's relentless pace, supporting the overall critical and commercial success of the film.[11] Vatsan further demonstrated his dramatic prowess as Thumban in the 2024 epic period action film Kanguva, directed by Siva, where he infused the character with intense emotional depth amid the story's mythological battles and revenge motifs.[12] His portrayal contributed to the film's visual spectacle, emphasizing raw intensity in a supporting antagonistic capacity. Throughout these roles from 2016 to 2024, Vatsan has garnered acclaim for his versatility, particularly in antagonist portrayals that demand physical and emotional transformations, with directors and audiences noting his dedication and screen appeal as key strengths in elevating ensemble-driven Tamil action genres.[9]Expansion to Telugu cinema
Vatsan Chakravarthy made his foray into Telugu cinema with the 2019 action thriller Arjun Suravaram, directed by T. Santhosh, where he played the supporting role of Siri, the son of the primary antagonist Tura Sarkar, portrayed by Tarun Arora. This debut marked a significant expansion from his established presence in Tamil films, building on the momentum from his notable performance as a college student in Lokesh Kanagaraj's Kaithi earlier that year. In Arjun Suravaram, Chakravarthy's character contributed to the film's antagonistic dynamics, engaging in confrontations that highlighted the thriller's themes of revenge and corporate intrigue, alongside lead actors Nikhil Siddharth and Lavanya Tripathi.[13] The transition to Telugu cinema presented adaptations in language and stylistic nuances, as Chakravarthy, primarily a Tamil actor, navigated dialogues in Telugu for the first time while maintaining the intensity of his supporting antagonist persona.[2] His involvement in this bilingual-friendly project, produced by People Media Factory, underscored cross-industry collaborations, allowing him to leverage his Tamil success for broader South Indian visibility without major lead roles initially.Recent and upcoming projects
In 2024, Vatsan Chakravarthy took on the role of Thumban in the Tamil epic action film Kanguva, directed by Siva and starring Suriya in dual roles.[14] The film, which explores themes of revenge and mythology set across two timelines, was released worldwide on November 14, 2024, in standard, 3D, and IMAX formats, receiving mixed reviews for its visual spectacle despite narrative critiques.[5] Chakravarthy's performance as the antagonist's ally contributed to the ensemble cast's portrayal of intense tribal conflicts. Marking his debut in Bollywood, Chakravarthy portrayed Ajay Dutta, a corrupt cop in a supporting antagonistic role, in the action thriller Sikandar, directed by A.R. Murugadoss and led by Salman Khan. The film, which began filming in 2024 and incorporates high-octane sequences and pan-Indian appeal with co-stars like Sharman Joshi, was released on March 30, 2025, and received mixed reviews (IMDb rating 3.6/10).[5][15][16] This venture signifies his expansion into Hindi cinema, building on prior multilingual experiences to pursue broader opportunities across Indian film industries. As of November 2025, no additional projects beyond Sikandar have been officially announced.Other work
