View on Wikipedia
Minnesota Public Radio broadcasts on 43 stations that serve Minnesota and its neighboring communities and 42 translators providing additional local coverage. (40 + 41 = 81 total.) Stations are located in Minnesota, Wisconsin (La Crosse), North Dakota (Fargo and Grand Forks), South Dakota (Sioux Falls), Michigan (Houghton), Iowa (Decorah), and Idaho (Sun Valley). MPR also operates KPCC in Pasadena, California.
Most areas are served by both a classical music station and a news and information station. One location is covered by a single station that combines both services. Two locations are served by a classical music station, a news and information station, and The Current.
MPR's newest service, The Current, is available in Austin, Hinckley, Mankato, the Twin Cities, New Ulm, Rochester and St. Peter.
Minnesota Public Radio also broadcasts all three of its services — News, Classical and The Current — on HD Radio in several communities throughout the state of Minnesota. In the Twin Cities, MPR multicasts "Classical 24", BBC News and "More", a Spanish language service from Radio Netherlands called "Ahora", and "Wonderground Radio", a service specifically geared towards children.

Coverage and Reach
Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) operates a network of 45 primary full-power stations and 41 low-power translators, providing extensive broadcast coverage across Minnesota and extending into select neighboring regions.[8] The primary stations deliver robust signals that form the backbone of the network, while translators fill in coverage gaps in rural and underserved areas. This infrastructure serves communities in Minnesota as well as parts of Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Michigan, enabling cross-border access to MPR's programming services.[4] The network achieves near-total population coverage within Minnesota, reaching virtually all residents through a combination of full-power transmissions and supplemental translators.[8] Extensions into adjacent states provide rimshot coverage—signals that spill over borders from Minnesota-based stations—to communities in border areas, enhancing market penetration without dedicated full-power facilities in those locations. MPR's three regional services collectively reach over 800,000 listeners weekly as of June 2025, with strong performance in core markets like the Twin Cities, where audience data from industry measurements underscore significant engagement.[9] Historically, MPR began as a single classical music station in 1967 and rapidly expanded during the 1970s to establish a regional network, incorporating additional full-power stations to broaden its footprint across Minnesota and into surrounding states.[10] This growth continued through strategic developments in subsequent decades, solidifying MPR's role as a comprehensive public radio provider with high signal reliability and demographic reach.[8]Programming Services
Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) provides three primary programming services to its affiliates, each tailored to distinct listener interests and featuring a mix of local and national content. These services are distributed across a network of stations and digital streams, emphasizing public service broadcasting with a focus on Minnesota audiences.[8] MPR News & Information offers 24/7 coverage of news, talk, and public affairs programming, blending in-depth local reporting on Minnesota issues with nationally distributed content from NPR. This service targets audiences seeking reliable, context-driven journalism on topics ranging from state politics and community stories to global events, featuring programs like All Things Considered and Morning Edition alongside original MPR productions. It serves as the core news outlet for the network, prioritizing factual analysis and diverse voices to foster informed public discourse.[11][12] YourClassical MPR delivers classical music and fine arts programming, including curated playlists, host-led shows, and live concert broadcasts, particularly from the Minnesota Orchestra. Aimed at music enthusiasts and cultural explorers, it features overnight music selections, daily features like New Classical Tracks, and educational segments that highlight performances and artist histories. The service evolved from the classical format originally associated with flagship station KSJN, providing a serene, ad-free listening experience that connects listeners to orchestral traditions and contemporary interpretations.[13][14][7] The Current focuses on indie rock, pop, and emerging music in a 24/7 format, spotlighting independent artists through local DJ-hosted shows, in-studio sessions, and playlists that promote new talent. Geared toward younger, music-discovery-oriented listeners, it emphasizes regional acts from the Twin Cities scene while integrating national indie releases, with features like artist interviews and festival coverage to build community around alternative sounds. Originating from station KCMP in 2005, it has become a key platform for breaking music and live event tie-ins.[15][16] In major markets such as the Twin Cities, MPR affiliates utilize HD Radio multicasting to expand access, with HD2 and HD3 channels carrying alternate services like The Current or additional music streams alongside the primary analog broadcast. This digital extension enhances format variety without requiring separate full-power stations.[17] Across the network, service distribution varies by region to optimize coverage: 29 primary stations carry MPR News & Information for broad informational reach, 33 provide YourClassical MPR for cultural programming, and 11 focus on The Current to target music aficionados. Overall, these services collectively reach over 800,000 weekly listeners as of June 2025 through radio and online platforms.[4][9]Primary Stations
Stations in Minnesota
Minnesota Public Radio operates a network of primary full-power stations across the state, providing its core services—MPR News for news and talk programming, YourClassical MPR for classical music, and The Current for contemporary music in select urban markets. These stations are all owned by MPR and serve as the backbone of its regional coverage, with technical details such as HD multicasting used to expand programming options where feasible. As of 2025, this includes 41 primary stations in Minnesota.[4] The following table enumerates the stations alphabetically by city of license, including callsign, frequency, primary service carried, HD channels (if applicable), effective radiated power (where available), and year established or acquired (where available).[4][18][7][19][20]| City of License | Callsign | Frequency | Service(s) Carried | HD Channels | Power (kW ERP) | Year Established/Acquired |

Stations Outside Minnesota
Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) maintains a limited presence outside Minnesota through primary full-power and low-power stations in neighboring states, primarily to extend its MPR News and YourClassical MPR services to border communities. These affiliates, owned or operated by MPR or its parent organization American Public Media (APM), typically provide full-time simulcasts of MPR programming with occasional local announcements or community-sponsored content. This out-of-state footprint supports MPR's mission to deliver public radio services across the Upper Midwest and beyond, though coverage remains focused on areas adjacent to Minnesota. As of 2025.[21] The following table lists MPR's primary stations outside Minnesota, including technical details and affiliation specifics:| Callsign | Frequency | City/State | Primary Service | Power (W) | HD | Notes/Affiliation Type |

Translator and Booster Stations
Translators in Minnesota
Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) operates over 40 low-power FM translators within the state to rebroadcast its primary signals into coverage gaps, particularly in rural and remote areas where full-power stations face signal attenuation from terrain or distance. These translators are licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as Class D facilities, limited to a maximum effective radiated power (ERP) of 250 watts, and are dedicated to non-commercial educational programming without originating local content. They carry one of MPR's three main services: MPR News (talk and news), YourClassical MPR (classical and fine arts music), or The Current (eclectic music).[8] Since the 2010s, MPR has supplemented analog translators with digital fill-in stations using HD Radio technology, allowing simultaneous carriage of multiple services on subchannels in urban-adjacent areas. This network of translators significantly enhances MPR's statewide reach, serving underserved rural populations; for instance, boosters in northern Minnesota extend MPR News and YourClassical MPR to over 50,000 residents in areas like Ely and Grand Rapids, where primary signals from stations such as WSCN (100.5 FM) would otherwise be weak.[4][31] The table below catalogs MPR's translators in Minnesota, compiled from official network maps and public files as of 2023. ERP values are from FCC licenses where available (10-250 watts for Class D); the list is partial, and full details are available via FCC records or MPR's station page. Duplicates have been removed for accuracy.| Callsign | Frequency (FM) | City/Community Served | Parent Station | Service Carried | ERP (watts) |

Translators Outside Minnesota
Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) operates several low-power FM translators licensed in neighboring states to extend its programming services across state borders, filling coverage gaps in adjacent markets and serving rural border communities. These translators rebroadcast signals from MPR's primary stations in Minnesota, providing access to MPR News, YourClassical MPR, and The Current without interfering with local broadcasters. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) permits FM translators to serve areas beyond the primary station's contour, including adjacent markets, as long as they adhere to interference protection rules outlined in 47 CFR Part 74 Subpart L, which limits ERP to 250 watts and requires primary signal reception.[33] Many of these translators were added or relocated post-2010 through FCC Auction 83 and subsequent filing windows, targeting underserved areas near the Minnesota border to enhance regional public radio access.[34] These cross-state translators play a key role in MPR's mission to deliver nonprofit, community-supported programming to a broader audience, including educational content, local news, and cultural offerings that resonate with border populations. For instance, they support MPR's goal of reaching over 1 million weekly listeners across its networks, with significant listenership in bordering states; estimates indicate more than 100,000 weekly listeners in Wisconsin alone through border-extending signals and translators.[8] This extension fosters shared regional identity and information access for communities in western Wisconsin, eastern North Dakota, southern Iowa, eastern South Dakota, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.| Callsign | Frequency | Location (City/State) | Parent Station | Service | ERP (watts) |
