Whiting is a city in Monona County, Iowa, United States. The population was 745 at the time of the 2020 census.
A post office called Whiting has been in operation since 1873. The city was named for Charles E. Whiting, a local farmer.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.00 square mile (2.59 km2), all land.
As of the census of 2020, there were 745 people, 307 households, and 179 families residing in the city. The population density was 732.6 inhabitants per square mile (282.8/km2). There were 343 housing units at an average density of 337.3 per square mile (130.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 85.0% White, 0.4% Black or African American, 2.1% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races and 10.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino persons of any race comprised 12.9% of the population.
Of the 307 households, 28.3% of which had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% were married couples living together, 8.5% were cohabitating couples, 30.0% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present and 19.5% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present. 41.7% of all households were non-families. 35.5% of all households were made up of individuals, 19.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
The median age in the city was 45.5 years. 23.9% of the residents were under the age of 20; 3.4% were between the ages of 20 and 24; 22.6% were from 25 and 44; 24.0% were from 45 and 64; and 26.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 45.5% male and 54.5% female.
As of the census of 2010, there were 762 people, 313 households, and 195 families living in the city. The population density was 762.0 inhabitants per square mile (294.2/km2). There were 340 housing units at an average density of 340.0 per square mile (131.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.7% White, 0.1% African American, 1.6% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.8% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.0% of the population.
