Born on January 10, 1981, in Beslan, North Ossetia, to an Ossetian father and Ukrainian mother, Badoev grew up in Horlivka, Ukraine, and later studied at the Kyiv Institute of Cinema and Television at the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts. He has directed over 500 music videos since the late 1990s, collaborating with major artists including Max Barskih, Ani Lorak, Svetlana Loboda, Polina Gagarina, and others, earning him repeated recognition as one of the top music video directors in the region through awards from platforms like RU.TV, M1 Music Awards, and others. His feature film debut, OrAngeLove (2006), marked a significant milestone as one of the first Ukrainian films selected for the Cannes Film Festival and won Best Director at the Kinoshock International Film Festival. Badoev has continued to blend music and film in projects such as Mamy (2012), Z.Dance (2012), and Mademoiselle Zhivago (2013), while also serving as a producer and career strategist for artists like Max Barskih and TAYANNA. In 2024, he received the Order of Merit III degree from Ukraine. His career reflects a prominent role in shaping visual storytelling in Ukrainian and post-Soviet pop culture.

Early life

Early years and family background

Alan Badoev was born on January 10, 1981, in Beslan, North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, USSR. He grew up in an Ossetian-Ukrainian family, with his father of Ossetian ethnicity and his mother Ukrainian, and has a sister. Soon after his birth, the family relocated to Horlivka in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, where Badoev spent his childhood and youth. In 2004, while visiting his grandmother in Beslan, his father was taken hostage by armed men who put a gun to the grandmother's head and forced him into their car. The family, then living in Ukraine, sold nearly all their possessions to pay a ransom of $150,000 for his release.

Education

Alan Badoev received his formal training in directing at the Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Kary Theatre, Cinema and Television University, where he enrolled in 1998 and graduated in 2003. During his university years, Badoev focused on creating student films, including the documentary cycle Life Take Two in 1999 and several short films in 2000 such as Trace, Ear and Stubble, and Five Minutes or Legends of the Killed Time. These early works earned recognition at student festivals, including Best Director and Best Cinematography at Fast-Fest Weekend 2000, as well as Best Documentary at the Golden Knight Malta and Enlightenment Film Festival in 2000. Following his graduation, Badoev transitioned into professional music video direction.

Career

Entry into filmmaking and early works

Alan Badoev transitioned into professional filmmaking by directing music videos in the early 2000s, while completing his final year at the Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Kary Theatre, Cinema and Television University. At the time, the Ukrainian film industry offered limited opportunities, prompting him to focus on the music video format at age 21 to acquire practical experience and establish a name for himself.
