Early life
Axel Thurel Sahuye Guessand was born on 6 November 2004 in Schiltigheim, a commune in the Alsace region of northeastern France.[1] He holds dual citizenship in France and Côte d'Ivoire, reflecting his family's Ivorian heritage.[1] Guessand grew up in Schiltigheim. He has an older brother, Evann Guessand, who was born on 1 July 2001 in Ajaccio, France, and has pursued a professional career as a forward, as of November 2025 with Aston Villa in the English Premier League.[1][6]Youth career progression
Axel Guessand began his youth football journey in the Alsace region of France, starting at AS Strasbourg from 2010 to 2015, where he developed his initial skills as a young defender.[1] He then progressed to Pierrots Vauban Strasbourg for the 2015–2017 period, continuing his local training before moving to SC Schiltigheim in 2017–2018, all within the Strasbourg area, building a strong foundation in regional youth competitions.[1] In 2020, Guessand joined the AS Nancy-Lorraine academy, where he honed his abilities as a centre-back, benefiting from the club's structured youth program until 2022.[2] In the summer of 2022, at age 17, Guessand transferred to Udinese's youth setup in Italy on a three-year contract, transitioning from the French system to prepare for higher-level competition.[3] There, he adapted to the Italian youth environment, playing for the Under-19 and Primavera teams while continuing to develop his ball-playing skills alongside his physical attributes as a promising tall defender.[7]Club career
Nancy
Guessand's breakthrough into senior football came with AS Nancy-Lorraine during the 2021–22 Ligue 2 season, marking his initial foray into professional competition following his youth development at the club. He made his senior debut on 28 August 2021, starting as a centre-back in a 1–4 home defeat to AJ Auxerre.[8][9] At 16 years, 9 months, and 22 days old, he became the youngest player in Nancy's history to appear in a professional match.[9] In his debut season, Guessand accumulated two appearances for the senior team, both without scoring. He also contributed to the reserve side, Nancy II, with nine outings in which he netted two goals.[10] Primarily positioned as a centre-back, Guessand emphasized solid defensive organization and aerial dominance, attributes bolstered by his 1.92-meter frame that aided in set-piece situations.[1]Udinese
In the summer of 2022, Axel Guessand transferred to Udinese Calcio from AS Nancy-Lorraine on a free transfer, signing an initial three-year contract until June 2025.[3][11] Upon arrival, he initially joined the club's youth setup, featuring prominently for the U19 team with 38 appearances and 4 goals, before earning promotion to the senior squad later that year.[10] Guessand made his Serie A debut on 4 June 2023 under manager Andrea Sottil, starting in a 1–0 away defeat to Hellas Verona alongside fellow debutant James Abankwah.[12] In total, across the 2022–23 and 2023–24 seasons, he accumulated 2 appearances in the Italian top flight and 2 appearances in the Coppa Italia (1 goal), registering no goals or assists in Serie A.[13] His limited opportunities reflected the competitive depth in Udinese's defensive line, where established centre-backs such as Jaka Bijol and Nehuén Pérez dominated starting roles.[10] During his tenure, Guessand benefited from Sottil's coaching emphasis on tactical discipline and organization within the club's signature 3-5-2 formation, which prioritized a solid three-at-the-back structure to support attacking wing-backs.[14] This period marked his adaptation to the physical and strategic demands of Italian football, though his senior exposure remained minimal amid the squad's hierarchy. In November 2022, shortly after his arrival, Udinese extended his contract through June 2027, signaling long-term investment in his potential.[7][15]Loan spells
In January 2024, Guessand joined FC Volendam in the Netherlands' Eredivisie on a six-month loan from Udinese to gain first-team experience. During his spell, he made two appearances without scoring, primarily as a substitute, as the team focused on integrating young talents into their defensive setup amid a challenging season.[10] He returned to Udinese in July 2024 upon the loan's expiration.[1] Following limited opportunities at Udinese, Guessand moved to Kristiansund BK in Norway's Eliteserien on March 4, 2025, initially on a deal until December 2027. He featured in five league matches (12 minutes played, no goals) and four cup matches (1 goal), for a total of nine senior appearances. The arrangement ended prematurely with his departure on September 29, 2025, after which he became a free agent.[1] These loans provided Guessand with exposure to varied tactical environments in competitive leagues, enhancing his development as a centre-back. Standing at 1.92 meters and weighing 79 kilograms, his physical attributes supported strong performances in aerial duels during limited minutes, contributing to his growing versatility in defensive roles.[1][16]Pafos
On 2 October 2025, Axel Guessand joined Pafos FC on a free transfer as a centre-back, signing a contract until 31 December 2027 following his departure from Udinese.[4][17][18] The transfer was motivated by Guessand's desire for consistent playing opportunities after a challenging loan spell at Kristiansund BK in Norway, where he made nine senior appearances (1 goal).[19] His role at Pafos is to reinforce the defensive line in the Cypriot First Division, with the club aiming to leverage his 1.92-meter height and left-footed proficiency in build-up play.[17][1] As of November 16, 2025, Guessand has not yet featured for Pafos, remaining on the bench or out of the squad during early matches due to his recent integration and adaptation to the team and league.[10] At the time of his signing, his market value stood at €375,000.[1] Pafos, the defending Cypriot champions and positioned third in the 2025–26 league table as of November 2025, offers Guessand a platform for potential involvement in European competitions if the club secures qualification through a top finish.[20]International career
Youth international career
Guessand was first called up to the France under-18 national team in September 2021 while playing for AS Nancy's youth academy, selected as a promising centre-back based on his performances in French youth leagues.[21][3] During the international friendlies that month, under coach Lionel Rouxel, he featured in two matches without scoring.[22] He started and played 83 minutes in a 2–4 defeat to Portugal U18 on 3 September 2021, handling defensive duties against a strong attacking side.[23] Guessand then made a brief substitute appearance for 2 minutes in a 2–2 draw with Spain U18 on 5 September 2021, entering late as a centre-back. He was also named to the squad but remained an unused substitute against Switzerland U18 on 1 September 2021.[22] These limited outings marked the extent of Guessand's youth international career at the under-18 level, with no further appearances recorded.[24]Senior international career
As of November 2025, Axel Guessand has not earned any senior international caps for France.[22] Born in Schiltigheim, France, Guessand holds French citizenship and is thus eligible to represent the French national team at the senior level.[1] He is also eligible for Côte d'Ivoire through his Ivorian descent, as confirmed by his parental heritage.[25] Under FIFA's eligibility regulations updated in 2021, players without senior international appearances can switch national teams once if they meet descent or birthplace criteria, provided they have not played in official competitions for the original association beyond youth levels.[26] Guessand's prior representations for France at the under-18 level do not preclude this option, as youth caps alone do not constitute a permanent tie under the rules.[27] His pathway through France's youth system, including U18 appearances, has positioned him as a prospect for potential future senior opportunities with Les Bleus, though limited first-team minutes at club level have delayed any call-ups to date.[24] No senior summons from the Ivorian Football Federation have been reported either, leaving his international allegiance undecided amid ongoing career development abroad.[22]Personal life
Family
Axel Guessand was born to Ivorian parents who immigrated to France, where they raised their sons in a supportive environment for pursuing professional football careers.[28] His father, a former striker himself, influenced the family's deep connection to the sport and encouraged both children to develop their talents from a young age.[29] Guessand's older brother, Evann Guessand (born 1 July 2001), is also a professional footballer, currently playing as a forward for Aston Villa in the Premier League.[6] Evann joined OGC Nice's senior team in 2020 after progressing through their academy, with prior loan spells at Lausanne-Sport (2020–2021) and Nantes (2022–2023), before transferring to Aston Villa in August 2025.[6] The brothers share a close bond forged through their parallel paths in football.[1] This familial dynamic has provided mutual encouragement, with the siblings drawing inspiration from one another's achievements in the sport while navigating the challenges of youth development in French academies.[1]Heritage and interests
Axel Guessand was born in Schiltigheim, France, to Ivorian parents, which has endowed him with a dual French-Ivorian nationality and a bicultural identity that bridges European and African influences.[30][31] This heritage potentially shapes his perspectives on international representation, as evidenced by his eligibility for both nations amid his youth career with France.[32] Guessand maintains a low public profile outside of football, with no reported involvement in controversies or philanthropic activities as of late 2025.[1] Since his transfer to Pafos FC in October 2025, he has been residing in Cyprus, adapting to life in the Mediterranean island nation while focusing on his professional development.[17]Career statistics
