Bumble
Bumble, headquartered in Austin, Texas, is a mobile app for online dating and social networking. It was founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd and was launched in December 2014. Profiles of potential matches are displayed to users, who can "swipe left" to reject a candidate or "swipe right" to indicate interest; if two users both indicate interest in each other, communication can begin. As of December 31, 2024, the app had over 2.8 million paying users. Bumble is operated by Bumble Inc., which also owns Badoo.
As of August 2024, 61% of Bumble users were men and 37% of users were female. As of April 2018, 85% of users were "looking for marriage or a boyfriend/girlfriend", while 4% of men and under 1% of women were "looking for a hookup" and 25% of users had gone on a first date with someone they found on the app within the previous month.
In 2014, at age 25, Whitney Wolfe Herd, an early VP of Marketing at Tinder, resigned from the company and received just over $1 million from settling a lawsuit against the company for sexual discrimination and sexual harassment after dating a Tinder co-founder who became "verbally controlling and abusive". She was then contacted by Andrey Andreev, the CEO and founder of Badoo, who encouraged her to partner with him to start a dating app. They formed Bumble in September 2014. Andreev received 79% ownership in the company for an initial investment of $10 million, along with additional investments, consulting services, and use of Badoo's infrastructure; Wolfe Herd served as CEO and received a 20% ownership stake.
The pair then recruited fellow Tinder departees Chris Gulczynski and Sarah Mick to design the interface. Bumble was launched three months later in December 2014. Infrastructure in Badoo's London headquarters was used for Bumble.
In August 2015, Wolfe Herd stated that within the app's first eight months, it saw 5 million unique conversations initiated.
As of March 2017, Bumble had more than 800 million matches and 10 billion swipes per month and was the second most popular Lifestyle app in the Apple App Store.
The company was valued at more than $1 billion in November 2017. In November 2019, Andreev sold his shares in the company to Blackstone Inc. at a valuation of $3 billion. The sale occurred amid allegations that Andreev allowed a culture in his London headquarters that was toxic for women.
In 2020, MagicLab was renamed Bumble Inc. as the parent company of both Bumble and Badoo. By July 2020, Bumble had been downloaded over 100 million times.
