History

[edit]

Formation

[edit]

On April 25, 2020, after straining their professional relationship, Fernanda Lira and Luana Dametto left the band Nervosa.[1] The following month, on May 20, they announced that they had formed a death metal band, the style they most identify with, called Crypta. They completed the line-up with guitarists Sonia Anubis (ex-Burning Witches, Cobra Spell)[2][3] and Tainá Bergamaschi (ex-Hagbard). Despite the announcement, the band had been formed a year earlier (June 2019).[4][5] On June 16, Napalm Records announced that they would release the band's debut album.[6][7] The band's first single and music video released was for the song From The Ashes,[8] about the well-known story of the phoenix.[9][10]

Echoes of the Soul

[edit]

The band recorded their first album in early 2021 at Family Mob, a studio owned by Jean Dolabella (Ego Kill Talent, ex-Sepultura) and Estevam Romera.[11] After releasing three singles (From the Ashes on April 21,[8] Starvation on May 11[12] and Dark Night of the Soul on June 8[13]), their debut album, Echoes of the Soul, was released on June 11, 2021.[14] It was mixed by Arthur Rizk (Code Orange, Power Trip) and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Sepultura). The cover art was created by Wes Benscoter, who is well known for his work with bands such as Slayer, Kreator, Black Sabbath and many others.[8] On November 20, Crypta performed their first concert, at the Porão do Rock festival in Brasília, with both an in-person audience and online streaming.[15] An unreleased track from Echoes of the Soul, I Resign, was released as a single and music video on March 3, 2022.[16]

On April 5, 2022, through their social media networks, Crypta guitarist Sonia Anubis announced that she amicably parted ways with Crypta to focus on her own band Cobra Spell.[17] On April 13, Jéssica di Falchi was announced as the substitute for Anubis during the band's already scheduled upcoming concerts and tours,[18] including shows at the Wacken Open Air and Rock in Rio festivals,[19] although she was not confirmed as an official band member until October 5.[20] Along with the announcement of di Falchi's official entry, the band confirmed that their second album is scheduled to be recorded and released in 2023.[20]

On March 31, 2023, while performing at the Apollo Theatre in Belvidere, Illinois, the venue's roof collapsed onto the audience during a tornado. Crypta was the only band that had performed in the concert, headlined by Morbid Angel alongside Skeletal Remains and Revocation. The sole death of the collapse was the only audience member to buy a Crypta band shirt, and was the subject of a WLS-TV interview by Lira.[21]

Shades of Sorrow

[edit]

On May 31, 2023, Crypta announced the release of Shades of Sorrow for August 4. The announcement was made along with the release of the band's new single from the album, Lord of Ruins, accompanied by a music video.[22] Before the album's release date, the singles Trial of Traitors and The other Side of Anger were released, on June 27 and August 1, respectively, along with music videos for the songs.

On March 10, 2025, the band announced that Jéssica di Falchi departed the band, stating it was a step "taken by mutual agreement, with the decision coming from her, and being respected and accepted by the band".[23][24]

Lyrical themes center on through adversity, mental health struggles such as depression and anxiety, and societal critiques, conveyed via aggressive yet melodic phrasing that underscores personal resilience and . These narratives, often drawn from Lira's experiences, explore , vengeance, and survival without veering into genre-typical gore. This approach ensures audible bass and guitar interplay while maintaining a raw edge suited to death metal's ferocity.

These foundational elements stem from the members' shared appreciation for sub-genres that blend ferocity with musicality, shaping Crypta's core aesthetic. Thrash metal roots, carried over from vocalist-bassist Fernanda Lira's time in Nervosa, infuse Crypta's music with speed and aggression, notably inspired by Brazilian pioneers , whose global success demonstrated the potential for Latin American bands in . Broader inspirations include Eastern European death and black metal acts such as and , which introduce atmospheric darkness and complexity. Progressive touches from and Agalloch further enhance the band's evolving sound with emotional layering and intricate structures. Member-specific contributions deepen these influences: cites bassist for her bass tone, emphasizing clarity and aggression in performance. Guitarist Tainá Bergamaschi draws from the melodic prowess of —especially Chuck Schuldiner's techniques—and incorporates doom and elements for atmospheric depth, reflecting her affinity for dark, despairing themes. The Brazilian metal scene's intensity, marked by passionate communities and economic challenges, underscores Crypta's drive, positioning them as innovators in female-led and inspiring greater female participation in the genre.
