The ESLAND Awards (Spanish: Premios ESLAND) are an annual awards ceremony given to content creation from Spain, Hispanic America, and Andorra, by Spanish YouTuber and streamer David Cánovas Martínez "TheGrefg".[1][2][3] The winners of each award are chosen by public vote and from among the top content creators in the Spanish-speaking community.[4][5][6]
The first edition took place on January 17, 2022, at the Palau de la Música Catalana, Barcelona, and was streamed live on the streamer's Twitch channel. With more than 1 million sixty thousand viewers, it became the third most watched stream on the platform.[7][8]
"ESLAND" is an acronym that refers to "España", "Latinoamérica" and "Andorra" (Spain, Latin America and Andorra).[9]
History
[edit]On December 4, 2021, TheGrefg announced the arrival of the Esland Awards through its Twitter account. There he detailed that it would take place on January 17 of the following year, from 18:00 to 23:00 (CET). The winner of each award would be chosen by a public vote, through the website, and the private votes of "150 of the most important content creators in the Spanish-speaking community".[10][11]
The event was presented by TheGrefg himself, who called it "the most important project of his life".[12] On the other hand, some media considered it "the Goya of Twitch" or "of the streamer world".[13][14]
TheGrefg stated that in a second edition, the Esland would be held in Hispanic America to "have worldwide coverage".[15] It was held on 29 January 2023 at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City.[16][17]

Controversy
[edit]On January 19, 2022, a clip went viral from streamer Folagor, who showed his disagreement with the nominees in the "roleplayer of the year" category, calling them "fucking bullshit". The controversy trended on Twitter with another clip, where he said that streamer Biyin, who was nominated as a "revelation streamer," became famous "for being AuronPlay's girlfriend," so he didn't understand the reason for her nomination. After other streamers spoke out on the issue, in a broadcast, Folagor apologized for his expressions, explained that Biyin's clip was "taken out of context" and, still maintaining his opinion, stressed that "it should have been other people who should have been nominated".[29][30][31][32][33]
In October 2022, due to the announcement of the second edition which would take place on Mexico City, a controversy came up, in which Spaniard streamers Rubius and AuronPlay, among other streamers said that "they weren't going to Mexico because it would be too far". These comments weren't well received by their Mexican followers, which led to a decrease on these streamers' followers counters.
On the second edition, a nomination to the user "Follacamiones24" (which could be translated as Trucksmasher24) on the dance of the year category went viral due to its irrelevance on Twitch platform, as he was an X social media user. Different influencers showed their opinion, being the most influential the opinion stated by the streamer TheGrefg, who said that the X user previously mentioned was not going to be supported by the community. These words carried with themselves different reviews about its user's fair participation on these awards edition.

Description and scope
The ESLAND Awards, formally known as Premios ESLAND, constitute an annual ceremony dedicated to recognizing excellence among content creators in streaming, esports, and digital media originating from Spain, Hispanic America, and Andorra, though the 2025 edition was canceled due to financial losses from the prior year.[4] Established to commemorate the burgeoning influence of the Spanish-speaking digital entertainment landscape, the event serves as a premier platform akin to industry benchmarks like the Oscars or Grammys, but tailored to the hispanohablante creator ecosystem.[7] The awards are organized by David Cánovas Martínez, widely recognized by his online alias TheGrefg, a leading Spanish streamer whose initiative aims to highlight and unite the talents driving the growth of online content in these regions.[6] This focus underscores the cultural and communal significance of digital media within the Spanish-speaking world, fostering appreciation for creators who engage millions through innovative and engaging formats.[7] Central to the ESLAND Awards is their emphasis on the hispanohablante community, encompassing content produced on key platforms including Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok.[8] The scope extends to diverse creative expressions, with categories that spotlight variety streaming for multifaceted entertainment, roleplaying for immersive narratives, in-real-life (IRL) content for authentic experiences, esports for competitive prowess, and viral moments that define cultural phenomena in digital spaces.[9]Format and voting
The ESLAND Awards employ a multi-phase process for nominations, beginning with data-driven selection for professional categories and community-driven proposals for popular ones. In professional categories, such as Streamer of the Year, nominees are chosen based on annual performance metrics including total hours viewed, average concurrent viewers, and unique spectators, sourced from platforms like Twitch; the top 10 performers advance as finalists.[10][11] For popular categories like Clip of the Year or Anger of the Year, the public submits proposals via social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) using specific hashtags (e.g., #EslandCLIP) and Reddit, with the top 10 finalists determined by a balance of viral popularity and editorial review by organizers.[10][5] A jury comprising approximately 150 verified top content creators from the Spanish-speaking community plays a key role in narrowing down and finalizing nominees, drawing from public submissions and statistical analyses to ensure representation of influential figures across platforms.[12] This professional panel, consisting of established streamers and influencers, evaluates entries to select the initial shortlist before public involvement escalates.[11] Voting occurs online through the official website premiosesland.com, where participants must authenticate via a Twitch account or similar to cast ballots; the process typically spans 5 to 7 days, such as from January 8 to 14 in recent editions.[10][12] Winners are determined by a weighted combination of public and professional votes, with the public contributing 25% and the jury of top creators accounting for 75%, using a ranked preference system where voters select up to four options per category to allocate points proportionally.[11][5] The ceremony unfolds as a live gala event, featuring a themed red or white carpet arrival, live performances by artists, acceptance speeches from winners, and sequential award announcements, all structured to highlight community achievements.[10] Broadcast primarily on Twitch with additional streaming on YouTube and other platforms, the event emphasizes interactivity through real-time reactions and charitable integrations.[5] Held annually in late January or February to honor content from the prior calendar year, the full process—from nominations to gala—spans several weeks, culminating in a high-energy production that fosters creator-fan engagement.[11][12]History
Inception and first edition
The ESLAND Awards were announced on December 4, 2021, by Spanish streamer David Cánovas Martínez, known as TheGrefg, through his social media channels.[13] The initiative aimed to recognize and support content creation in video games and digital entertainment within the Spanish-speaking community, encompassing creators from Spain, Andorra, and Latin America.[14] This marked the first major awards ceremony dedicated exclusively to Hispanic streamers and YouTubers, filling a gap in the growing ecosystem of live streaming platforms like Twitch.[9] The inaugural edition took place on January 17, 2022, at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, Spain, and was broadcast live on TheGrefg's Twitch channel for approximately six hours.[9] The event attracted over 1.06 million peak concurrent viewers, making it one of the most-watched streams on the platform at the time and highlighting the scale of the Spanish-speaking streaming audience.[9] It featured 17 categories focused on achievements from 2021, including Streamer of the Year, Best Event, and lighter-hearted ones like Fail of the Year and Clip of the Year, with winners determined through public voting.[13] Among the key winners, Ibai Llanos received the Streamer of the Year award, along with Fail of the Year for a viral mishap involving a celebrity photo edit, underscoring his dominance in the community.[9] Tortillaland was honored with Best Content Series for their collaborative work, exemplifying the awards' emphasis on innovative group efforts in streaming.[15] The ceremony's success, with nearly 1.9 million unique viewers overall, established the ESLAND Awards as a cornerstone event for the Hispanic content creation scene.[9]Subsequent editions and expansions
The second edition of the Premios ESLAND took place on January 29, 2023, at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, marking the first time the awards were held outside Spain and extending their reach into Latin America.[6][1] This move highlighted the event's growing international appeal within the Hispanic streaming community, with 17 categories recognizing top content creators from Spain and Latin American countries.[16] The third edition occurred on February 16, 2024, at the Poliesportiu d'Andorra (Andorra Sports Centre) in Andorra la Vella, further broadening the awards' geographic scope to include Andorra alongside Spain and Hispanic America.[17][18] To streamline the ceremony, organizers reduced the number of categories to 12, emphasizing core achievements in streaming while maintaining a focus on creativity and community impact.[17][19] This edition lasted approximately 5.5 hours, a shortened format compared to prior years, allowing for a more concise broadcast.[17] Expansions in subsequent editions included greater inclusion of international nominees, particularly from Latin American countries, reflecting the awards' evolution to celebrate a broader Hispanic creator base. Viewership for the 2024 ceremony averaged 317,600 concurrent viewers across platforms, with a peak of 475,800, demonstrating sustained audience engagement despite the format adjustments.[17][20] Organizational changes supported this growth, including partnerships with local entities in host countries; for the 2024 event, collaborations with Andorran production firms like Bonvehí and La Fura dels Baus handled the opening ceremony and scenography, while charitable ties with organizations such as StopHaters addressed online harassment prevention.[21][8] These adjustments, including pre-gala events like live streams and concerts starting weeks in advance, enhanced community involvement and logistical efficiency.[8] In 2025, TheGrefg announced a fourth edition on January 29, 2025, but the event was ultimately canceled.[22][4]Categories
Core categories
The core categories of the ESLAND Awards consist of eight recurring honors that have been presented in each edition since the inaugural ceremony in 2022, focusing on standout achievements in streaming content creation within the Spanish-speaking community. These categories emphasize overall excellence, emerging talent, major events, sustained series, viral moments, memorable emotional reactions, real-life streaming, and roleplaying content, selected through a combination of public voting and industry nominations.[23][24][25] Streamer of the Year recognizes the top overall content creator based on their impact, popularity, and contributions to the Hispanic streaming ecosystem, often awarded to individuals who dominate viewership metrics and community engagement across platforms like Twitch and YouTube. This category underscores the award's emphasis on leadership in the industry, with winners typically exemplifying innovation in live content delivery.[3][26] Streamer Revelación (Revelation Streamer) honors emerging talents who gained significant prominence during the award year, highlighting newcomers or rising stars whose breakthrough performances or unique styles captured widespread attention and grew the community's diversity. It serves as a gateway for up-and-coming creators to receive formal recognition early in their careers.[3][27] Best Event of the Year awards major collaborative or spectacle events, such as high-profile boxing matches, gaming tournaments, or large-scale virtual gatherings that draw massive audiences and foster community interaction. This category celebrates productions that transcend individual streams, often involving multiple creators and achieving peak concurrent viewership in the millions.[3][28] Best Content Series honors ongoing streaming series with narrative or thematic consistency, rewarding creators who develop extended formats like serialized challenges, storytelling arcs, or educational content that maintain viewer retention over multiple episodes. It promotes the value of structured, long-form content in building loyal audiences.[3][26] Clip of the Year celebrates the most viral or memorable short clip from streams, typically capturing humorous, surprising, or culturally resonant moments that spread rapidly on social media and amplify a creator's reach. This award highlights the role of bite-sized highlights in driving broader engagement beyond live broadcasts.[3][27] Enfado del Año (Meltdown of the Year) recognizes the most entertaining or notable on-stream frustration moment, often involving exaggerated reactions to gameplay failures or unexpected events that become iconic for their authenticity and humor. It adds a lighthearted nod to the unscripted, human elements that endear streamers to their fans.[3][28] Best IRL Streamer recognizes creators excelling in real-life, non-gaming broadcasts such as travel, challenges, or daily life content.[23][24][25] Best Roleplayer spotlights immersive narrative-driven content in games like Grand Theft Auto roleplay servers.[23][24][25]Evolving and special categories
The ESLAND Awards have introduced several esports-focused categories to recognize achievements in competitive gaming and broadcasting within the Spanish-speaking streaming community. The Best Esports Player category, which honors outstanding professional players, debuted in the inaugural 2022 edition and continued through 2023, highlighting talents like professional League of Legends competitors. Similarly, the Best Caster category, awarded in 2022 and 2023, celebrated skilled play-by-play commentators and analysts who enhance esports viewership. These additions reflected the growing intersection of streaming and professional esports in Hispanic markets.[9][24] Variety and niche categories have also evolved to capture diverse content styles, adapting to trends in interactive and immersive streaming. The Best Variety Streamer category was newly added in 2024 to honor versatile creators blending multiple genres, such as gaming, reactions, and collaborations, signaling a shift toward broader content recognition. In 2024, Streamer Promesa del Año was introduced, similar to Streamer Revelación but focused on promising talents. Mejor Cobertura Informativa, recognizing best informative coverage, debuted in 2023 and continued in 2024. Miniserie de Contenido, for short series, was featured in 2023 and 2024.[17][5][3][25] Humorous and viral categories have provided lighthearted moments, often tied to memorable mishaps or memes from the streaming year. The Fail of the Year award, featured in 2022 and 2023, celebrated comedic blunders, such as awkward on-stream moments that went viral. The Jägger of the Year category, limited to 2022, playfully awarded the best "hunter" in gaming contexts, drawing from popular survival and battle royale streams. The Best Dance (Baile del Año) award, presented in 2022 and 2023, highlighted viral choreography from streams. These honors underscored the awards' emphasis on entertaining, shareable content. In 2022 and 2023, Mejor Trayectoria (Best Career) recognized lifetime achievements, with an honorific version in 2023.[9][24] Over time, the ESLAND Awards have streamlined their structure for greater focus and accessibility. The 2022 edition featured 17 categories, expanding to 18 in 2023 with additional niche additions, but by 2024, the total was reduced to 12 to prioritize core streaming achievements while retaining select evolving ones. This included the removal of categories like Best Talk Show, Best Esports Player, Best Caster, Fail of the Year, and Best Dance after 2023.[9][6][17]Ceremonies
2022 ESLAND Awards
The inaugural ESLAND Awards ceremony took place on January 17, 2022, at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, Spain, honoring outstanding achievements in Spanish-speaking streaming content from the previous year. Organized and hosted by popular streamer David "TheGrefg" Cánovas, the event featured 17 categories and attracted hundreds of attendees from the streaming community, including prominent creators who walked a red carpet before the gala. It marked the first major awards show dedicated exclusively to Hispanic content creators on platforms like Twitch and YouTube, emphasizing viral moments, esports contributions, and innovative series.[9][29] The ceremony was broadcast live on Twitch, drawing a peak viewership of over 1.06 million concurrent viewers and accumulating more than 3.8 million hours watched, establishing it as a landmark debut for the awards with sustained high engagement throughout the nearly four-hour event. Notable highlights included emotional ovations for winners like ElXokas, who received a standing applause for his Revelation Streamer award, and a surprise video connection from AuronPlay following the Tortillaland series win, which added a heartfelt touch to the proceedings. The show also featured entertaining segments, such as the appearance and performance by the mascot-like "Jagger boxeador," contributing to its festive atmosphere and community-driven vibe.[9][29][30] Winners were determined through a combination of public voting and selections by industry experts, with Ibai Llanos dominating by securing three awards, including the top honor of Streamer of the Year. Organized by streamer TheGrefg, the ceremony featured a streamlined set of 12 categories, reduced from previous years to enhance efficiency and focus on key achievements in content creation.
