Upbringing and education
Eric Dick was born on October 3, 1994, in Roeland Park, Kansas. His family relocated to Carmel, Indiana, when he was five years old, where he grew up in a supportive household with his sisters. During his early childhood in Carmel, Dick participated in a variety of youth sports, including basketball on local teams, swimming with the neighborhood swim team, and baseball through the Carmel Dad's Club, fostering his active lifestyle and interest in athletics.[5] Dick attended Carmel High School, graduating in 2013. Academically, he earned the Scholar Athlete Award three times and was inducted into the National Honor Society, reflecting his commitment to balancing studies and extracurriculars. He also served as a class representative in student government, demonstrating leadership skills beyond the classroom. These achievements highlighted his disciplined approach during his high school years.[6] Following high school, Dick chose to enroll at Butler University in Indianapolis, approximately 25 miles from Carmel, drawn to its combination of rigorous academic programs and strong athletic resources for aspiring student-athletes. He majored in science, technology, and society, maintaining a focus on interdisciplinary studies that aligned with his broader interests. This transition marked the beginning of his integration of academics and athletics at the collegiate level.[6]Youth soccer career
Eric Dick began playing organized soccer at age five after his family relocated to Carmel, Indiana, from Roeland Park, Kansas City, initially joining the Carmel Dads' Club and Carmel Community Schools programs.[5] There, he started as an energetic field player, with his team reaching the local championship four consecutive years during his early youth but falling short in each final.[5] Dick honed his skills through dedicated practice, such as kicking balls against the Carmel Dads' Club wall for hours, which helped build his technical foundation.[5] Transitioning to the goalkeeper position in high school, Dick secured a freshman role at Carmel High School before earning a varsity spot for his final two seasons, where he was recognized as a two-time All-District and All-County performer.[2] His development accelerated in his senior year when he joined the Indiana Fire Academy, competing in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy League—a premier regional youth platform that exposed him to higher-level competition.[5][2] Under the guidance of goalkeeper coach Mike Sanich at the Indiana Fire Academy, Dick refined his positioning, shot-stopping, and command of the box, attributes that proved pivotal in his growth.[5] Participation in the academy's league matches and related showcases during this period drew interest from college recruiters, setting the stage for his commitment to Butler University.[5]College career
Butler University
Eric Dick joined Butler University in 2014 as a freshman goalkeeper and became the starting netminder for the Bulldogs men's soccer team, appearing in all 71 matches across his four seasons from 2014 to 2017.[6] Over this period, he established himself as one of the program's most reliable performers, culminating in a career goals against average (GAA) of 0.92 and a Butler-record 28 shutouts.[6][7] In his freshman year of 2014, Dick played in 13 matches with 12 starts, posting a 0.81 GAA and contributing to 5 shutouts along with 1 shared shutout, as the Bulldogs finished with a 6-7-5 overall record.[6] As a sophomore in 2015, he started all 18 games, achieving a 0.90 GAA and 7 shutouts while helping Butler secure a 10-4-4 record and third-place standing in the BIG EAST Conference.[6] Dick's development continued in his junior season of 2016, where he started all 20 matches with a 0.95 GAA and 7 shutouts; his strong play anchored the defense during the team's BIG EAST Tournament championship run, earning him the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award.[6][7] Dick's senior year in 2017 marked his pinnacle, as he started 20 of 21 matches, recorded a 0.97 GAA, and notched a single-season program record of 9 shutouts—bringing his career total to the all-time Butler mark of 28.[6][8] For his efforts, he was named the 2017 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and helped lead the Bulldogs to a 14-5-2 record, the conference regular-season title, and a third-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament.[9][7] Beyond athletics, Dick's academic excellence was recognized with the 2017-18 BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor, which included a $4,000 postgraduate scholarship; he maintained a 3.376 cumulative GPA while majoring in Science, Technology, and Society and earned four consecutive selections to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.[7]Professional career
Sporting Kansas City (2018–2020)
Eric Dick was selected by Sporting Kansas City with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft out of Butler University.[2] He signed his first professional contract with the club on February 15, 2018, ahead of the season opener.[10] As a rookie, Dick served primarily as the backup goalkeeper behind veteran Tim Melia, appearing in just one MLS match during his three seasons with Sporting Kansas City. He made his league debut on October 6, 2018, starting in a 1-0 loss to FC Dallas at Children's Mercy Park.[2] To gain playing experience, Dick was loaned to Sporting Kansas City's USL Championship affiliate, Swope Park Rangers, for the 2018 season. He made his professional debut on March 31, 2018, in a 2-1 loss to Las Vegas Lights FC and went on to record 15 appearances (13 regular season, 2 playoff), including four shutouts and 49 saves, contributing to the team's run to the USL Western Conference Semifinals.[3][2] In 2019, Dick returned to Swope Park on loan, making nine regular-season appearances with two shutouts while splitting time with other keepers. Dick was loaned again in 2020, this time to USL Championship side Phoenix Rising FC for the full season starting February 4. The year was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, limiting him to two appearances, though he earned recognition on the USL Team of the Week for Week 6 after a strong performance in a 5-2 win over New Mexico United on August 9.[11][12] Following the 2020 season, Sporting Kansas City declined Dick's contract option, placing him on the MLS Re-Entry Draft list. He was selected by the Columbus Crew in Stage 2 of the draft on December 22, 2020, effectively ending his tenure with Sporting Kansas City after three years.[13][14]Columbus Crew (2021)
Eric Dick was selected by Columbus Crew SC in Stage Two of the 2020 MLS Re-Entry Draft on December 22, 2020, making him the club's 26th overall pick as a goalkeeper.[13][14] The team officially signed him to a one-year contract on January 8, 2021, adding depth to their goalkeeper roster following their 2020 MLS Cup victory.[13] During the 2021 MLS season, Dick served as the third-choice goalkeeper behind starter Eloy Room and backup Evan Bush, providing support in training and as a bench option amid a competitive schedule that included MLS regular-season matches, the Concacaf Champions Cup, and Leagues Cup play.[14][3] On June 24, 2021, Dick was loaned to USL Championship club Indy Eleven, where he made four appearances.[15] He did not make any first-team appearances for the Crew in league or cup competitions, focusing instead on maintaining squad readiness during a year when Columbus finished second in the Eastern Conference.[16] His loan experiences had prepared him for such depth roles in a top MLS contender.[15] Dick's tenure with the Crew concluded after the 2021 season, as he was not retained for the following year, paving the way for his subsequent career move.[15]Minnesota United FC (2022–2023)
Eric Dick joined Minnesota United FC after being selected by the club in Stage 2 of the 2021 MLS Re-Entry Draft on December 23, 2021, and officially signing a one-year contract on January 18, 2022.[17] This move followed his time with the Columbus Crew, positioning him as part of the Loons' goalkeeping depth behind starter Dayne St. Clair.[18] Throughout the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Dick made no appearances in MLS regular season matches, serving primarily in a backup role to maintain competition and depth in the goalkeeper position. His sole senior team outing came in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on May 25, 2022, where he started against Union Omaha, though Minnesota fell 2-1 after extra time.[20] This appearance highlighted his readiness to step in for cup competitions, contributing to the team's overall goalkeeper rotation during injury or rest periods for the primary options. Dick logged key minutes with Minnesota's reserve side, MNUFC2, in MLS NEXT Pro across both seasons, bolstering the affiliate's backline. In 2022, his debut year with the reserves, he recorded three starts, achieving two wins and two shutouts while conceding just three goals in 300 minutes played.[21] These performances, including solid distribution and shot-stopping in Western Conference fixtures, underscored his value in developing younger talent and providing stability during MNUFC2's inaugural MLS NEXT Pro campaign. In 2023, following his re-signing to a one-year deal with a club option in November 2022, Dick remained on the roster to support goalkeeping depth but saw limited playing time with the reserves amid increased competition.[21][22] Dick's contract with Minnesota expired at the end of the 2023 season, and the club declined its option on December 1, 2023, paving the way for his transition to the USL Championship.[23]Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (2024–present)
Dick signed with USL Championship club Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC as a free agent on January 22, 2024, following his departure from MLS side Minnesota United FC.[24] His prior experience as a backup goalkeeper in Major League Soccer helped facilitate a smooth transition to the starting role with the Hounds, where he became the primary No. 1 keeper from the outset of the 2024 season.[1] In his debut campaign, Dick anchored the Riverhounds' defense across 26 appearances, posting a league-best 0.69 goals-against average while conceding just 18 goals and recording a club-record 14 shutouts.[1] These performances earned him the 2024 USL Championship Goalkeeper of the Year award, the Golden Glove for the lowest goals-against average, and a spot on the All-League First Team, highlighting his emergence as one of the top netminders in the league.[25][26][27] Dick continued as the undisputed starter in 2025, making 28 appearances in the regular season and conceding 25 goals while securing 11 clean sheets by late October.[28] His consistent shot-stopping and command of the penalty area contributed to the Riverhounds' strong defensive record, including a league-leading 13 shutouts overall in all competitions as of early November.[29] Bolstered by Dick's efforts, the team clinched a home playoff spot and advanced through the postseason, defeating Hartford Athletic and Detroit City FC in penalty shootouts to reach the Eastern Conference Final against Rhode Island FC on November 15, marking the club's deepest playoff run in recent history.[30][31] As of November 2025, Dick remains a cornerstone of the Riverhounds' backline, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.[32] His ongoing success positions him as a key asset in the USL Championship, potentially drawing interest for future opportunities while solidifying his role in Pittsburgh's push for a championship.[33]Career statistics
