View on GrokipediaEarly life
High school career
Jared Mayden was born on June 24, 1998, in Dallas, Texas, and raised in the nearby suburb of Sachse.[11] He grew up in an athletic family; his father, James Mayden Sr., played basketball as a center for the University of Oklahoma from 1994 to 1995, while his older brother James Mayden played wide receiver at Rice University from 2014 to 2016, and his younger brother Jalen Mayden followed in their footsteps as a quarterback at Sachse High School before playing college football at institutions including Mississippi State and San Diego State.[6][12] Mayden attended Sachse High School in Sachse, Texas, where he emerged as a standout defensive back, playing primarily as a cornerback with versatility to also contribute at safety.[13] As a freshman, he earned 3rd Coast Freshman of the Year honors and started for the Mustangs, showcasing his potential early in his high school career.[13] Over his tenure, Mayden demonstrated strong coverage skills and ball-hawking instincts, contributing to Sachse's competitive teams in Texas's competitive 6A classification; he was selected to the Texas Associated Press Class 6A All-State football team as a senior in 2015.[14] His high school performance drew widespread attention from college programs, culminating in an invitation to The Opening, Nike's elite all-star prospect camp held on the Nike Campus.[13] Rated as a four-star recruit by 247Sports with an 88 composite score—the No. 134 overall prospect nationally, No. 13 cornerback, and No. 24 player in Texas for the class of 2016—Mayden's athletic profile highlighted his size, speed, and football IQ, positioning him for a highly competitive recruitment process.[13][15][16]College recruitment
Jared Mayden, a standout cornerback from Sachse High School in Texas, attracted significant attention from college recruiters due to his athleticism and defensive skills during his senior year.[13] In August 2015, Mayden committed to the Oregon Ducks as a four-star recruit, ranked as the No. 7 cornerback nationally by 247Sports.[17] However, on December 7, 2015, he decommitted from Oregon amid coaching changes and reopened his recruitment, drawing interest from several elite programs including Alabama, Texas, and Oklahoma.[18][19] Mayden ultimately signed with the Alabama Crimson Tide on National Signing Day, February 3, 2016, citing the influence of head coach Nick Saban's personal visit—during which Saban famously participated in a dance known as the Wobble—and Alabama's renowned defensive tradition as key factors in his decision.[20][21][22] According to the 247Sports Composite rankings for the 2016 class, Mayden was rated as the No. 134 overall prospect, the No. 13 cornerback in the nation, and the No. 24 player in Texas.[13][15][16]College career
2016–2018 seasons
Mayden arrived at the University of Alabama as a highly touted cornerback recruit in the class of 2016, but his initial years were marked by a gradual integration into the program amid stiff competition in the secondary.[13] As a true freshman in 2016, he appeared in four games, primarily contributing on special teams units, where he recorded one solo tackle and one pass deflection while focusing on mastering the complexities of Alabama's defensive scheme.[23] This limited role allowed him to preserve eligibility and develop without the immediate pressure of starting duties, as the Crimson Tide's depth chart featured established veterans like Eddie Jackson and Minkah Fitzpatrick.[24] Entering his sophomore season in 2017, Mayden saw expanded opportunities, appearing in seven games and logging four tackles, including one for loss, mostly in special teams and rotational defensive roles.[25] His contributions helped support Alabama's dominant defense during a national championship campaign, though he remained behind upperclassmen in the depth chart. Following the season, Mayden underwent surgery for a hip injury sustained earlier, which limited his participation in spring practices but did not derail his long-term development.[26] During this period, he also took on scout team responsibilities, simulating opposing offenses to aid the starters' preparation, a common path for young defensive backs in the SEC.[27] By his junior year in 2018, Mayden's role evolved significantly as he transitioned from cornerback to safety, adapting to the position's demands for greater range and coverage versatility under defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt.[28] He played in all 13 games, recording 18 tackles (eight solo), one sack, and two pass deflections, often rotating in at free safety and continuing special teams duties amid ongoing depth chart battles.[4] A targeting ejection during the Iron Bowl against Auburn resulted in a half-game suspension for the SEC Championship, but his overall performance demonstrated steady progress in a unit that ranked among the nation's elite.[29] Throughout these seasons, Mayden's academic diligence supported his on-field growth, as he balanced rigorous coursework with practice demands in one of college football's most competitive environments.[3]2019 season
In his senior season, Jared Mayden transitioned from a rotational role to a full-time starter at safety for the Alabama Crimson Tide, starting 11 of 12 games played. He finished the year with 59 tackles, including 1 tackle for loss, 4 interceptions that led the team, 3 pass breakups, contributing significantly to a defense that ranked among the nation's best in scoring defense (18.6 points per game allowed).[3][30][31][32] Mayden's coverage efficiency stood out, as he allowed just 17 receptions on 30 targets for 152 yards according to Pro Football Focus data, while his ball skills were highlighted in a dominant 66-3 win over Western Carolina on November 23, where he recorded 4 tackles and 2 interceptions. In the Vrbo Citrus Bowl victory over Michigan on January 1, 2020 (35-16), he added 6 tackles to help cap Alabama's 11-2 campaign.[33][34][35] Following the season, Mayden participated in the 2020 Reese's Senior Bowl, where he impressed NFL scouts by demonstrating versatility through reps at both safety and cornerback during practices.[36]Professional career
San Francisco 49ers
After going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, Jared Mayden signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent on April 28, 2020. His strong senior season at Alabama contributed to the 49ers' interest in his defensive back versatility. The 49ers waived Mayden during final roster cuts on September 5, 2020, but he cleared waivers and was signed to their practice squad the following day.[37] Mayden spent the entire 2020 season on the 49ers' practice squad, contributing to special teams drills and benefiting from exposure to the team's defensive schemes.[38] On January 6, 2021, the 49ers signed Mayden to a reserve/future contract, securing his rights for the upcoming season.[39] He was waived again on August 31, 2021, during training camp cuts, but rejoined the practice squad on September 1.[40] Mayden remained on the practice squad until his release on October 18, 2021, to make room for other additions.[41] Throughout his time with the 49ers, he focused on professional development within a defense anchored by edge rusher Nick Bosa, honing his coverage and run support techniques.[42] Mayden appeared in two regular-season games during the 2020 season with the 49ers, contributing one solo tackle primarily on special teams.[2] Scouting evaluations highlighted his ball skills, noting his ability to track and disrupt passes effectively, as well as his solid tackling form in open-field situations, which impressed 49ers personnel during training camp.[43] These attributes positioned him as a developmental prospect in the team's secondary depth.[44]Philadelphia Eagles
Following his release from the San Francisco 49ers practice squad, Mayden signed with the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad on October 26, 2021.[45] During the 2021 season, he remained primarily on the practice squad under defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, receiving limited reps in defensive installations while contributing to special teams preparation.[6] Mayden was elevated to the active roster four times—against the New Orleans Saints on November 21, the New York Giants on November 28, the New York Jets on December 12, and the Washington Football Team on January 2, 2022—appearing in those games with six total tackles (four solo, two assisted) on special teams, but no defensive snaps.[46][47] On January 18, 2022, the Eagles signed Mayden to a reserve/future contract, securing his spot for the 2022 offseason and training camp.[48] He participated in preseason activities but suffered an undisclosed injury, leading to his placement on injured reserve after being waived/injured on August 16, 2022.[49] The Eagles reached an injury settlement with Mayden and released him from injured reserve on September 20, 2022, ending his tenure with the team.[50]Buffalo Bills (first stint)
Following his release from the Philadelphia Eagles' injured reserve due to an undisclosed injury, Jared Mayden signed with the Buffalo Bills' practice squad on October 10, 2022.[46] The move addressed depth needs in the secondary amid ongoing injuries, including safety Micah Hyde's placement on injured reserve earlier in the season and cornerback Christian Benford missing the prior two games.[51] Mayden joined as the Bills held a 5-0 record after their Week 5 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. During his three-week tenure, Mayden remained on the practice squad without any elevations to the 53-man active roster. He was released on November 3, 2022, to make room for wide receiver Isaiah Coulter on the practice squad as part of broader roster management.[52]New York Jets
On November 5, 2022, Mayden was signed to the New York Jets' practice squad, two days after his release from the Buffalo Bills' practice squad.[53][54] Mayden remained on the Jets' practice squad for the rest of the 2022 regular season, a period of approximately eight weeks, without any elevations to the active roster or participation in games.[9][55] During his tenure, Mayden joined the defensive unit under head coach Robert Saleh as the Jets navigated a competitive stretch, entering Week 9 at 6-3 following a win over the Bills and reaching 7-4 after Week 12 before finishing the season 7-10 overall.[56][57]Buffalo Bills (second stint)
Following his release from the New York Jets practice squad, Mayden signed with the Buffalo Bills' active roster on January 4, 2023, to provide depth in the secondary amid safety Damar Hamlin's season-ending injury.[7][58] This marked his return to the Bills after an earlier practice squad stint during the 2022 season and subsequent time with the Jets.[59] Mayden remained with the Bills through the 2023 offseason and training camp but did not appear in any regular-season or playoff games during this period.[2] In the preseason, he played in all three games, logging defensive snaps and recording 4 solo tackles and 2 assists for a total of 6 tackles.[60] The Bills waived Mayden on August 27, 2023, as part of final cuts to reach the 53-man roster limit ahead of the regular season.[61][10]Arlington Renegades
Following his journeyman path through several NFL teams, Jared Mayden signed with the Arlington Renegades of the XFL on December 18, 2023, ahead of the league's merger into the United Football League (UFL) for the 2024 season.[62] This move provided Mayden an opportunity to compete in a spring football league, where he joined a Renegades secondary seeking depth under head coach Bob Stoops, aiming to leverage the platform for potential visibility and a return to NFL rosters.[63] Mayden participated in the team's training camp but was waived on March 21, 2024, prior to the UFL regular season opener, resulting in no games played.[64] The waiver came as the Renegades finalized their roster, with Mayden noted for his prior college experience at Alabama but ultimately not retained amid competitive cuts in the defensive backfield.[64] As of November 2025, Mayden remains an unsigned free agent, with no reported contracts in the NFL or UFL since his release from the Renegades.Career statistics
