Early years
Johan Gómez was born on July 23, 2001, in Arlington, Texas. He grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area as part of a Mexican-American family, with eligibility for Mexican national team selection stemming from his parents' heritage.[9][2][11] Gómez's introduction to organized soccer came early, as he began playing at the age of 7 by joining the Solar Soccer Club, a prominent local youth organization in the Dallas region. Prior to that, he participated in recreational programs with the YMCA, where he first developed an interest in the sport. His time with Solar focused on building foundational skills through competitive play in regional youth leagues.[9][2] By age 12, in 2013, Gómez transitioned to the FC Dallas Academy, a key milestone in his early development that provided advanced training and exposure to higher-level competition. During his pre-academy years with Solar and YMCA, he demonstrated early promise as a forward, participating in state-level tournaments and team successes that highlighted his scoring ability and work ethic. His Mexican heritage has shaped his cultural identity, blending influences from both American and Mexican backgrounds in his Texas upbringing.[6][2][9]Family background
Johan Gómez is of Mexican descent through his parents, which has made him eligible to represent Mexico internationally alongside his American nationality.[6][9] He is the older brother of Jonathan Gómez, a professional defender who plays for Albacete Balompié in Spain's Segunda División (as of 2025).[12][13] The Gómez family has been instrumental in fostering the brothers' soccer ambitions, providing emotional and logistical backing for major career steps, including Johan's relocation to Europe at age 18 to join FC Porto's youth system in 2019—a move that Jonathan later emulated.[14][15]Club career
Youth career
Johan Gómez began his organized youth soccer journey with the Solar Soccer Club in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where he developed foundational skills before transitioning to a more competitive environment.[9] In 2013, at the age of 12, Gómez joined the FC Dallas Academy, committing to a structured development program that emphasized technical proficiency, tactical awareness, and physical conditioning under professional coaching.[4] Over the next six years, he progressed through the academy's age groups, primarily as a forward, benefiting from intensive training sessions and competitive matches within the U.S. Soccer Development Academy framework. Under coach Luchi González with the U-17 team, Gómez honed his goal-scoring instincts and movement off the ball, contributing to team successes in domestic leagues and showcases.[16] Gómez's standout performances came in high-profile youth tournaments, including the 2018 Generation Adidas Cup, where he scored three goals and provided one assist across four matches for the FC Dallas U-17s, helping them finish as the top MLS academy side in the Champions Division.[17] He notably netted the second goal in a 2-1 group-stage victory over Monaco, showcasing his ability to capitalize on transitional plays.[16] His consistent scoring led to individual honors, such as the U-17 Central Conference Best XI and Generation Adidas Cup Best XI selections, underscoring his emergence as a prolific attacker in American youth soccer.[9] In August 2019, shortly after turning 18, Gómez transferred to FC Porto's youth system in Portugal, marking a significant step in his development by immersing him in a renowned European academy known for its emphasis on possession-based play and high-intensity pressing.[15] During the 2019-2020 season, he featured for the Porto U-19 team in the UEFA Youth League, making three appearances as he adapted to the faster pace and technical demands of European youth competition.[6] This move challenged Gómez to refine his positional versatility, shifting between forward and attacking midfield roles while adjusting to cultural and stylistic differences from the U.S. setup. He remained with Porto's youth ranks until 2021, using the experience to build resilience and tactical acumen before advancing further.[9]North Texas SC
Gomez joined North Texas SC, the USL League One affiliate of FC Dallas, in 2019 as part of the club's academy development pathway, marking his transition from youth to professional soccer.[18] He made his professional debut on May 4, 2019, starting as a center forward in a 1-0 home win over Greenville Triumph SC, where he showcased his creativity by executing a clever turn on the edge of the box to generate a shot opportunity in the first half, though it was deflected for a corner.[19][18] In his next match on May 11, 2019, Gomez started again and scored his first professional goal in the 77th minute during a 4-1 victory against Orlando City B, assisted by Arturo Rodriguez to secure the lead; he also received a yellow card earlier in the game before being substituted in the 90th minute.[20] Across six appearances that season in USL League One—the third tier of American professional soccer—Gomez primarily operated as an attacking midfielder or forward, logging between 180 and 300 minutes while contributing one goal and demonstrating his speed and persistence in applying pressure in the attacking third.[8][18] This brief professional exposure under coach Eric Quill provided essential senior-level experience, bridging his FC Dallas youth background to opportunities abroad.[18] The USL League One stint, during North Texas SC's inaugural season, honed Gomez's professional acumen at a competitive developmental level, directly preceding his transfer to FC Porto's youth system in August 2019.[21][6]Porto B
Johan Gomez joined FC Porto B in July 2020, transitioning from a brief professional debut with North Texas SC in the USL Championship to the competitive environment of Portugal's Liga Portugal 2. At 18 years old, he integrated into the reserve team by adapting to the faster pace and technical demands of European football, training alongside more experienced players and occasionally with the first team.[9][22] During the 2020–21 season, Gomez established himself as an attacking midfielder, making 23 appearances and scoring one goal while contributing to the team's efforts to maintain their league status. His playing style evolved toward greater versatility, focusing on intelligent positioning, two-footed play, and cutting inside from wide areas to create chances, though he occasionally struggled with consistency in a possession-oriented system.[23][9] The higher competitive level presented significant challenges, including frequent bench roles due to first-team players being loaned down to bolster the reserves, which disrupted his preparation and starting opportunities. Gomez described instances where up to eight senior players displaced the youth squad in a single match, leading to frustration despite a generally positive overall experience; he highlighted the mental toll of working hard all week only to be excluded on matchday. No major injuries were reported, but these inconsistencies limited his development and prompted his decision to depart in June 2021 in pursuit of more regular playing time elsewhere in Europe.[9][22]FSV Zwickau
Johan Gómez signed a two-year contract with FSV Zwickau on July 8, 2021, joining the 3. Liga club on a free transfer following a successful trial after his departure from Porto B. Over the subsequent two seasons (2021–2023), Gómez established himself as a key attacking presence for Zwickau, adapting to the league's demanding physicality and tactical discipline under the guidance of American head coach Joe Enochs, who provided a supportive environment for the young forward.[6] Playing primarily as a striker in a 4-4-2 system—his preferred role after more varied positional duties at Porto B—Gómez contributed to the team's mid-table stability in his debut campaign, where Zwickau recorded a balanced record of four wins, ten draws, and four losses in their first 18 matches.[5] His prior experience in Portugal's competitive reserve league helped ease his transition to European professional play, though he noted the 3. Liga's emphasis on endurance and directness better suited his strengths.[5] Across all competitions, Gómez delivered consistent performances, scoring 15 goals and providing 7 assists in 75 appearances, including four goals in his first 16 league outings during the 2021/22 season that underscored his growing confidence in the forward line, and notable cup performances (3 goals, 4 assists in Landespokal Sachsen).[5][8] Notable moments included his maiden goal for the club on September 18, 2021, a composed finish in the 25th minute that secured a 2-0 home win over 1860 Munich—Zwickau's first victory of the campaign—and an opening goal in a 2-0 triumph against SC Verl on March 4, 2023.[24] The following season, he added six goals in 3. Liga play, providing crucial offensive output amid the team's struggles.[6] Gómez's contract with Zwickau expired at the end of the 2022/23 season, coinciding with the club's relegation to the Regionalliga after finishing 20th in the 3. Liga. Seeking to advance his career in a higher division, he departed on a free transfer to 2. Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Braunschweig on June 13, 2023, where he signed a two-year deal to take on greater challenges.Eintracht Braunschweig
Johan Gómez transferred to Eintracht Braunschweig from FSV Zwickau on a free transfer, with the move announced on June 13, 2023, and effective July 1, 2023, under an initial two-year contract.[2] His prior success at Zwickau, where he contributed significantly in the 3. Liga, facilitated this step up to the 2. Bundesliga.[6] At Eintracht Braunschweig, Gómez wears jersey number 44 and primarily operates as an attacking midfielder, capable of playing on the wings or centrally to support offensive transitions.[25] He integrated into the squad as a versatile squad player, bringing energy and technical skill from his American and Portuguese youth development background, though he initially faced competition for starting spots in a team adjusting after relegation from the Bundesliga.[6] In the 2023–2024 season, Eintracht Braunschweig finished 15th in the 2. Bundesliga with a record of 11 wins, 5 draws, and 18 losses, securing survival through a strong home form that yielded 25 points from 17 matches.[26] Gómez made 34 league appearances (28 starts, 2,222 minutes), scoring 3 goals and providing 4 assists; he also featured in one DFB-Pokal match (82 minutes, no goals or assists).[8] His role was largely rotational as the team prioritized defensive stability amid a challenging campaign.[27] The 2024–2025 season saw Eintracht Braunschweig end 16th with 8 wins, 11 draws, and 15 losses, accumulating 35 points and avoiding direct relegation via the playoff position, bolstered by improved away resilience with 13 points from 17 games. Gómez appeared in 27 league matches (19 starts), providing 2 assists but no goals; he also played in one DFB-Pokal match and two relegation playoff matches (no goals or assists).[28][8][29][3] On July 9, 2024, Gómez signed a two-year contract extension, committing to the club until June 30, 2027, reflecting his improved form and the team's confidence in his development.[2] In the 2025–26 season, as of November 2025, Gómez has made 11 league appearances (4 starts, 535 minutes) and 1 DFB-Pokal appearance (120 minutes), without goals or assists. He remains a key rotational option in Braunschweig's squad, with prospects for further progression in the 2. Bundesliga contingent on maintaining consistency and adapting to tactical shifts under the current management.[2]International career
U.S. under-20 team
Johan Gomez earned his first call-up to the U.S. under-20 men's national team in August 2019, selected by head coach Tab Ramos for a training camp and two friendly matches in Slovenia as part of the team's preparation for the 2021 FIFA U-20 World Cup cycle.[30] His inclusion was based on strong performances in the FC Dallas academy and a brief stint with North Texas SC in USL League One earlier that year, where he made six appearances and scored once, highlighting his potential as a versatile forward capable of contributing in attack.[21] Gomez made his U-20 debut on September 5, 2019, starting as a forward in a 2-1 victory over a Croatian youth selection in Rogaska Slatina, Slovenia, where he helped maintain the team's attacking pressure alongside teammates like Cole Bassett and Cameron Harper, who scored the goals. Three days later, on September 9, he appeared in the second friendly, a 3-0 win against the United Arab Emirates U-23 team, netting his first international goal in the match to open the scoring and demonstrating his role in linking midfield play with forward runs to enhance team dynamics. These two appearances from 2019 represent Gomez's full involvement with the U.S. under-20 team during his youth eligibility period through 2021, totaling two caps and one goal while playing primarily as an attacking midfielder who provided creativity and goal threat in the team's offensive setup.[6] His early international exposure during this time, tied to his transition from FC Dallas to FC Porto's youth system, underscored his development as a dynamic presence in the U.S. youth pipeline.[31]U.S. under-23 team
Johan Gómez earned his first call-up to the U.S. under-23 men's national team in October 2023 for a training camp in preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he featured as a forward alongside players like Paxten Aaronson and Duncan McGuire.[32] During this camp, he made his debut in a 0-0 draw against Mexico on October 15 in Las Vegas and started in the subsequent 4-1 victory over Japan on October 18 in Phoenix, Arizona, scoring the opening goal in the 5th minute to set the tone for the U.S. attack.[9] His performance highlighted his ability to contribute in forward-thinking play, using his vision and positioning to initiate pressing and transitions.[33] In November 2023, Gómez was selected for another U-23 camp in San Pedro del Pinatar, Spain, appearing in a 0-1 friendly loss to Morocco on November 21, 2023, which further solidified his role in the squad's buildup phase.[34] He continued his involvement into 2024, receiving a call-up for a March training camp in Spain, where he scored his second international goal in a 3-0 victory against Guinea on March 22, finishing a move sparked by Griffin Yow in the 75th minute.[35] Later that year, in May, he joined the final pre-Olympic preparation camp, featuring in a friendly against Japan on June 11 in Kansas City, contributing to the team's efforts despite the U.S. ultimately failing to qualify for the tournament. In July 2024, he was named as an alternate for the U.S. Olympic soccer team for the Paris Games, although the U.S. failed to qualify.[36][37] Over these call-ups from 2023 to 2024, Gómez accumulated seven appearances and two goals, often deployed on the wing or as an attacking midfielder to drive offensive momentum.[38] Gómez's progression to the U-23 level built on his prior experience with the U.S. under-20 team, positioning him as a promising talent in the youth pipeline. The under-23 program serves as a key pathway to the senior national team, emphasizing Olympic qualification and high-level competition, though Gómez has yet to earn a senior cap as of November 2025.[9] His standout moments, including those goals against Japan and Guinea, underscored his clinical finishing and integration into the team's dynamic attacking style under head coach Marko Mitrović.[33][35]Career statistics
