Kamyaran (Persian: كامياران)[a] is a city in the Central District of Kamyaran County, Kurdistan province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district.[4]

The inhabitants of Kamyaran are Kurdish[5] and mainly follow the Shafi'i school of Sunni Islam; however there is a Shia minority as well as a few Jewish families in Kamyaran.[citation needed]

Population

The population of Kamyaran tripled in a matter of two decades (1975-1995) due to mass immigration from nearby villages. [citation needed] At the time of the 2006 National Census, the city's population was 46,760 in 11,186 households.[6] The following census in 2011 counted 52,907 people in 14,007 households.[7] The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 57,077 people in 16,547 households.[2]

The city of Kamyaran is located at the south end of Kurdistan province between two major Kurdish cities, Sanandaj and Kermanshah.

Archaeology

Tengiwer cuneiform inscription is located 45 km northwest of Kamyaran. The inscription consists of 47 lines in cuneiform that had been carved in Assyrian. The inscription refers to Sargon II, an Assyrian king, on which his captures of Arpad, Simirra, Damacsus, Egypt and other countries have been inscribed. The inscription dates back to around the eighth century B.C.E.[8]
