Early life
Karoy Zidane Lovebourne Anderson was born on 1 October 2004 in Lewisham, London, England.[2] His full name incorporates "Zidane" as a tribute to the French footballer Zinedine Zidane, inspired by his mother's admiration for the player, and "Lovebourne" as a family surname honoring his grandfather.[6][7] Anderson's family background reflects strong Jamaican roots, with his mother born in Clarendon, Jamaica, and his paternal grandmother originating from Trelawny, Jamaica, which granted him eligibility to represent the Jamaica national team despite his English birth.[8] Raised in the nearby Sydenham area of South London, he grew up immersed in Jamaican culture through family traditions, including food and music.[8][6] His early interest in football developed through informal play, such as cage football in South London neighborhoods, where he honed basic skills and cultivated a passion for the sport before entering organized youth training.[6] This local exposure, combined with inspiration from family acquaintance and Charlton academy product Joe Gomez, laid the foundation for his progression into structured academy football at Charlton Athletic around age nine.[6]Youth career at Charlton Athletic
Karoy Anderson joined Charlton Athletic's academy at the under-9 level in 2013, at the age of nine.[9] He progressed steadily through the club's youth ranks, featuring regularly for the under-18 team by the 2020–21 season. In April 2021, Anderson contributed to a 4–1 away win against Hull City under-18s in the Professional Development League, where he discussed his role in midfield and the team's cohesive play in a post-match interview.[10] The following year, he reflected on a 2–0 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion under-18s in February 2022, highlighting areas for improvement in the team's defensive transitions during another academy notes session.[11] On 5 October 2021, Anderson signed his first professional contract with Charlton Athletic, securing his future at the club until the summer of 2024.[12] As he continued to impress at youth level, including captaining the under-21 side, Anderson earned early exposure to senior football by being named on the substitutes' bench for Charlton's EFL Trophy group stage match against Brighton & Hove Albion U21s on 2 November 2022.[1][13]Club career
Charlton Athletic
Karoy Anderson made his senior debut for Charlton Athletic on 22 November 2022, coming on as a substitute and scoring the opening goal in a 3–1 EFL Trophy group stage defeat to Plymouth Argyle.[1][14] Following his debut, Anderson was loaned to Aldershot Town in January 2023. He made his league debut for Charlton in EFL League One on 5 August 2023, substituting in a 1–0 home win over Leyton Orient.[15] Anderson gradually progressed to a regular starter in League One during the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons, featuring in midfield and occasionally at right-back, with his versatility contributing to Charlton's improved form under manager Nathan Jones.[3][7] By November 2025, Anderson had accumulated over 80 senior appearances for Charlton across all competitions, scoring 5 goals, including his debut strike in the EFL Trophy against Plymouth Argyle (2022), league goals against Derby County and Northampton Town (2023–24), and against Bolton Wanderers and Wycombe Wanderers (2024–25). He has since featured in the 2025–26 EFL Championship season, making 10 appearances as of 14 November 2025.[15][16][3] On 17 September 2025, Anderson signed a contract extension with Charlton, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2028.[17][3] Anderson played a supporting role in Charlton's 2024–25 League One campaign, making 43 appearances (16 starts) across all competitions as the team secured promotion to the EFL Championship via a 1–0 victory over Leyton Orient in the playoff final at Wembley on 25 May 2025, where he came on as a substitute and assisted in the build-up play.[15][18][19][20]Aldershot Town (loan)
On 17 January 2023, Karoy Anderson joined Aldershot Town on a one-month loan from Charlton Athletic to gain first-team experience in the National League.[14][21] The move was intended to provide the 18-year-old midfielder with regular senior football following limited opportunities in Charlton's first team.[21] Anderson made his debut for Aldershot on the same day, coming on as a substitute in a 2–1 league victory away at Solihull Moors.[21] Over the loan period, he featured in 7 matches, all in the National League, primarily operating in a defensive midfield role without scoring any goals.[21][15][22] His appearances were mostly as a substitute, accumulating approximately 450 minutes of playing time.[15] On 21 February 2023, the loan was extended for an additional month, allowing Anderson to remain with Aldershot until mid-March.[21][23] He returned to Charlton Athletic at the conclusion of the extended spell on 23 March 2023.[22] The loan stint offered Anderson valuable exposure to competitive senior matches, contributing to his ongoing development as a central midfielder at the parent club.[21]International career
Jamaica national team
Karoy Anderson received his first senior call-up to the Jamaica national team in October 2023 for the CONCACAF Nations League, having qualified through his Jamaican heritage.[9] He made his international debut on 12 October 2023, coming on as a substitute at halftime in Jamaica's 4–1 away victory over Grenada.[24][25] Anderson has since earned 18 caps for Jamaica as of 14 November 2025, without scoring any goals.[26] His appearances have included substitute roles in various competitive fixtures, accumulating limited minutes. Notable among his international engagements are participations in the 2024 Copa América, where he featured as a substitute in group stage matches against Ecuador and Venezuela, and ongoing CONCACAF Nations League contests that contributed to his early development. These outings, alongside World Cup qualifying efforts, have seen him involved in key regional competitions. In November 2025, Anderson was called up for Jamaica's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches and made a substitute appearance (9 minutes) against Trinidad and Tobago on 14 November 2025.[5][26]Playing style
Anderson is a versatile central midfielder known for his strong defensive contributions. He excels in tackling, interceptions, and winning duels, particularly aerial duels, ranking highly in these metrics among peers. His style emphasizes short passes and layoffs, though he tends to commit fouls frequently. Weaknesses include low pass accuracy, poor dribbling success, holding onto the ball, crossing, and finishing.[27][28]Career statistics
