Early life and education
Upbringing
Katie Sarife was born on July 1, 1993, in McKinney, Texas, USA.[9] She is the daughter of Fernando Sarife, who is of Argentinian and partly Lebanese descent, and Shelly Miller Sarife, an American of English, Scottish, and Irish ancestry.[10][11] Sarife grew up in Texas alongside her three siblings, Emily, Mary, and Alex.[11] At around age 18, she relocated to Los Angeles to pursue acting opportunities.[12]Acting training
Sarife developed an interest in acting during her high school years in McKinney, Texas, where she graduated from McKinney North High School before pursuing formal training.[13] Following high school, she enrolled in classes at Cathryn Sullivan's Acting for Film studio in nearby Plano, Texas, a program emphasizing on-camera techniques and professional preparation for film and television.[14][12] Under the mentorship of Cathryn Sullivan, Sarife advanced rapidly, adapting the studio's methods and serving as a main aide and teacher for several years, which deepened her practical understanding of the craft.[12][15] Prior to her professional debut in 2011, she relocated to Los Angeles to further her career, continuing her development through targeted acting workshops focused on on-camera performance.[12]Professional career
Early roles (2011–2018)
Sarife made her professional acting debut in 2011, portraying the character Selena in the made-for-television movie Teen Spirit, a comedy about a popular girl who dies and returns as a ghost to help an unpopular classmate win prom queen.[16] In the following year, she took on supporting roles in multiple projects, including Abel's Field, a drama where she played Courtney, a high school student in a story centered on a groundskeeper mentoring a troubled teen athlete.[17] She also appeared as Eliza in the unaired Disney pilot Zombies and Cheerleaders, a musical sitcom exploring zombie-human dynamics in high school, and had a minor role as a girl in an episode of the MTV sketch comedy series Sketchy.[18][19] Expanding into television guest spots, Sarife guest-starred as Marie in the 2014 Supernatural episode "Fan Fiction," depicting a high school student directing a musical adaptation of the show's lore, which highlighted her comedic timing in a meta-narrative.[20] In 2015, she portrayed Gina DeJesus, one of Ariel Castro's real-life kidnapping victims, in the Lifetime television movie Cleveland Abduction, opposite Taryn Manning as Michelle Knight, earning praise for her portrayal of resilience amid trauma.[21] The next year brought roles in Twisted Sisters (also known as Sorority Nightmare), where she played the manipulative Maria, the film's hidden antagonist in a thriller about sorority intrigue, and as the recurring character Marly Evans in two episodes of Disney's Girl Meets World, introducing a new student navigating high school dynamics.[22] By 2018, Sarife secured her first lead role as Sarah Hurley in the YouTube Red original series Youth & Consequences, a comedy-drama following a high school principal's daughter entangled in social power struggles at Central Rochester High; the eight-episode series marked a significant step in building her series experience.[23] Over this period, she accumulated around ten credits across film and television, primarily in supporting and guest capacities, which helped her gain visibility and transition toward more prominent opportunities in the industry.[2]Breakthrough and later roles (2019–present)
Sarife achieved a major breakthrough with her lead role as Daniela Rios in the 2019 supernatural horror film Annabelle Comes Home, a spin-off in The Conjuring Universe directed by Gary Dauberman and produced by New Line Cinema. In the film, her character becomes entangled in supernatural events after accidentally unleashing the possessed doll Annabelle, showcasing Sarife's ability to portray vulnerability and intensity in high-stakes horror scenarios. This role, opposite stars like Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, marked a significant step up from her earlier work and greatly enhanced her visibility within the industry, establishing her as a rising talent in the horror genre.[2] Building on this success, Sarife continued to explore horror with her portrayal of Kellyn Cage in the 2022 thriller So Cold the River, directed by Paul Shoulberg and adapted from Michael Koryta's novel.[24] As the young investigator Kellyn, she delved into themes of family secrets and supernatural curses in a Midwestern town, further solidifying her presence in atmospheric horror narratives. The film, featuring co-stars like Bethany Joy Lenz and Andrew J. West, highlighted Sarife's versatility in ensemble-driven stories.[25] She also guest-starred as Esther Ahmed in an episode of This Is Us (2021) and appeared as Aliz Kazan in two episodes of The Rookie: Feds (2022).[26][27] In 2024, Sarife transitioned into drama with a lead role as Linda Jenkins in The Nana Project, a road-trip comedy-drama directed by Robin Givens.[8] Her character supports the film's central figure, a grandmother pursuing her chess ambitions, allowing Sarife to demonstrate emotional depth in familial and inspirational contexts.[28] This project diversified her portfolio beyond horror, earning praise for its heartfelt ensemble dynamics.[29] As of November 2025, Sarife remains active in the horror community, appearing at the Midsummer Scream convention in Long Beach, California, in August 2025, where she engaged with fans discussing her Conjuring Universe work.[30] No major new film projects have been announced for her in 2025, but her convention presence underscores ongoing fan engagement.[31] Sarife's career trajectory since 2019 reflects a preference for horror and drama genres, where she has garnered increased recognition for her compelling portrayals of complex, resilient young women.[2] Her roles in franchise blockbusters and independent features have positioned her as a genre staple, with growing acclaim for blending intensity with nuance.[32] Alongside acting, Sarife has pursued teaching as a side venture since around 2020, co-founding Just Be Acting Studio in Los Angeles to offer on-camera acting classes and workshops.[33] Through the studio, she instructs aspiring actors on techniques like self-taping and scene work, with sessions held in-person in Los Angeles and online for international participants.[12] Her teaching draws from over a decade of professional experience, emphasizing practical skills for the industry.[3]Filmography
