Key Information
Kevin Riepl is an American composer for video games, films and television shows.[3] He is best known for his work on the Unreal series of games as well as Gears of War and Aliens: Colonial Marines.[4][5]
Biography
[edit]Riepl was born in Cliffwood Beach, New Jersey. His interest in music started at the age of six, when he began to play piano and guitar under the instruction of his uncle.[6] In the fourth grade he began studies on the trumpet and piano and that continued throughout his high school years in which he was a member of a variety of bands and orchestras.[7] After high school, he began private independent studies in composition and orchestration at the Village East Conservatory of Music. Following the years at the conservatory and few scoring projects, he attended Mannes College of Music in New York City for further education in composition and orchestration.[8]
Riepl began his career working as an assistant and co-writing partner for Kevin Manthei in the early 2000s.[9] At the time, Cliff Bleszinski, former design director at Epic Games, who was then looking for a different musical sound for the Unreal franchise, played his demo reel.[9] This led him to work on Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Championship 2.[10] In February 2005, Riepl became attached to Gears of War. Initially, he was asked to write the main themes for the game, but after submitting the pieces he had written, Epic liked what he created and signed him on to create the entire score.[11] In March 2007, Riepl recorded the score for the massively multiplayer first-person shooter computer game Huxley, developed by Webzen Games.[12][13]
In October 2010, Riepl suffered a sudden heart failure and was hospitalized. He had a pump installed in his heart until a donor heart could replace it, and underwent the heart transplant in July 2011. Shortly afterwards, a rare tumor was found on his adrenal gland, which was affecting his blood pressure. He has since made a good recovery.[14]
In addition to his work on the video game industry, Riepl has composed for films and television series, including his recent scores for horror films such as Silent Night, Contracted and the Cabin Fever films (Patient Zero and the 2016 film remake).[15][16]

Early life and education
Kevin Riepl was born and raised in Cliffwood Beach, a small town in central New Jersey.[7] His early exposure to music came through family, particularly his uncle, an accomplished guitarist and pianist who provided initial lessons starting when Riepl was six years old.[7] These sessions included learning songs like "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple on piano and guitar, fostering a blend of guided instruction and personal enthusiasm.[7] In fourth grade, Riepl expanded his instrumental studies to include the trumpet, continuing with piano through high school while participating in school bands and orchestras.[7][2] From a young age, he showed self-taught creativity by constructing his own compositions, inspired by the emotional impact of music in films and television.[7][2] This period also highlighted family influences, as his uncle's musical proficiency encouraged Riepl's budding interests beyond formal lessons.[7] Following high school, Riepl pursued private studies in composition and orchestration at the Village East Conservatory of Music.[7][8] He then advanced to formal education at the Mannes College of Music in Manhattan, where he focused on composition, orchestration, instrumentation, jazz, and classical music.[7][3] These programs built the technical foundations for his later work, emphasizing both theoretical and practical skills in music creation.[3]Professional career
Riepl began his professional career in the early 2000s as an assistant composer and co-writing partner to Kevin Manthei at Kevin Manthei Productions in Los Angeles, where he contributed to various television and game projects, including scores for animated series and adventure titles.[3] This role honed his skills in diverse musical styles, from jazz-infused themes to ambient soundscapes, under tight production deadlines.[3] His breakthrough into video game scoring came with the Unreal series (2002–2004) at Epic Games, where he composed dynamic, orchestral-driven tracks for Unreal Championship, Unreal Tournament 2003, and Unreal Tournament 2004, marking a pivotal shift toward high-energy action scores that defined the franchise's auditory identity.[1][3] This period established Riepl as a rising talent in the gaming industry, collaborating closely with design director Cliff Bleszinski to align music with fast-paced gameplay.[3] Riepl achieved major success with the Gears of War series, composing the original 2006 score using a full live orchestra to capture the game's gritty, epic tone, which earned critical acclaim for its intense, militaristic orchestration.[1] He contributed approximately 50 minutes of music to the 2008 sequel, Gears of War 2, before handing primary duties to Steve Jablonsky, solidifying his reputation for orchestral scores in blockbuster gaming.[3][1] In the mid-2000s, Riepl transitioned to film and television, starting with synth programming for Michael Giacchino's score on the Disney film Sky High (2005), followed by additional music contributions to the animated series Invader Zim.[1] These early forays into live-action and animation expanded his versatility, blending electronic elements with traditional scoring techniques.[1] Since 2015, Riepl has maintained a long-term collaboration with Warner Bros. Animation, becoming a key composer for the DC Animated Universe, where his scores for direct-to-video films and series emphasize heroic themes and dramatic tension through hybrid orchestral and electronic arrangements.[9][1] Riepl further expanded into major Hollywood productions, providing additional music for films such as Ghost in the Shell (2017), directed by Rupert Sanders, and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023), collaborating with composers like Lorne Balfe to enhance action sequences with atmospheric and percussive layers.[1][10] In recent years up to 2025, Riepl has focused on direct-to-video animated films within the DC Universe and independent projects, including composing the full score for the action-thriller Under Fire, a Voltage Pictures production released in August 2025, which features his signature blend of intense, rhythmic orchestration tailored to high-stakes narratives.[1][11]Personal life
In October 2010, Kevin Riepl was diagnosed with end-stage heart failure from an undisclosed cardiac condition, leading to the implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) to support his heart function.[12] Nine months later, in July 2011, he underwent a successful heart transplant surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, receiving a donor heart that restored his cardiac strength after the procedure.[12][13] Following the transplant, Riepl endured a rigorous recovery involving multiple surgeries over the subsequent 2.5 years, during which his medical team monitored his progress closely and noted significant improvements in his overall health.[13] Six weeks post-transplant, in August 2011, doctors diagnosed a rare genetic tumor above Riepl's adrenal gland as the underlying cause of his heart failure, which had been affecting his blood pressure; the benign tumor was surgically removed shortly thereafter.[12] Although the condition was genetic and unprecedented in his family, subsequent testing confirmed its benign nature, allowing Riepl to resume normal activities as his recovery progressed into the mid-2010s.[12] By 2016, while still in the later stages of recuperation, he described working on projects like the short film Henri as a therapeutic outlet, connecting the story's themes to his own experiences of vulnerability and renewal.[2] These health adversities profoundly shaped Riepl's personal outlook, fostering deep gratitude toward his donor family for granting him a second chance at life and safeguarding his loved ones from the genetic risk.[12] In public reflections, he has emphasized how the ordeal reinforced his commitment to music as a means of processing trauma, culminating in 2017 with the release of his album as we grasp the stillness, which musically chronicles the six-year journey from crisis to healing.[14] This resilience enabled him to continue his professional composing career without interruption after initial recovery.[2]Credits
Video games
Kevin Riepl began his video game composing career in 2002, contributing to over 20 titles through 2025, with a focus on action, shooter, and adventure genres developed by studios like Epic Games and Gearbox Software. His scores often blend orchestral elements with electronic and industrial sounds to create immersive, adrenaline-fueled atmospheres that adapt to fast-paced gameplay and narrative tension.[1][15] Riepl's early breakthrough came with the Unreal series, where he crafted intense, hybrid tracks emphasizing rhythmic percussion and synth layers to underscore multiplayer combat. For Unreal Tournament 2003 (2002), he composed the full original score, including dynamic themes like "Assault" and "Chemical Burn" that heightened the game's frenetic arena battles.[16][17] Similarly, in Unreal Championship (2002) and Unreal Tournament 2004 (2004), his contributions featured aggressive electronic-orchestral fusions, such as the menu theme and ending sequence, supporting the series' evolution into console-friendly shooters.[1][18] His most iconic work is the epic orchestral score for Gears of War (2006), which established a gritty, militaristic sound with heavy percussion, choirs, and synthetic undertones inspired by blockbuster films, totaling over 60 minutes of music for the Locust invasion narrative. For Gears of War 2 (2008), Riepl provided additional music to expand on the original's themes, integrating more organic elements amid the series' escalating war sequences.[19][20][21] In later projects, Riepl's style evolved to incorporate adaptive, genre-blending elements suited to diverse gameplay. For Aliens: Colonial Marines (2013), he delivered a tense, horror-infused orchestral score evoking the Alien franchise's dread, with pulsating synths and strings amplifying xenomorph encounters. Hunted: The Demon's Forge (2011) featured his dark fantasy compositions, mixing medieval orchestration with electronic pulses for co-op combat. Rocket League (2015) included his high-energy track "Scorched Earth," a chaotic rock-orchestral piece for the Chaos Run DLC that matched the game's vehicular mayhem. Other notable contributions include additional music for Tales from the Borderlands (2014), blending folk and electronic motifs for its episodic storytelling, and full scores for Battleborn (2016), emphasizing heroic anthems in a MOBA-shooter hybrid.[22][23][24]| Year | Title | Role |
