Childhood
Leah Cairns was born on June 2, 1974, in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.[1] She spent her formative years growing up in Kamloops, British Columbia.[5]Initial interests in acting
Leah Cairns grew up in Kamloops, British Columbia, where she nurtured an early passion for the performing arts through rigorous dance training.[2] Her childhood aspirations centered on becoming a professional dancer, a pursuit she followed diligently until a severe car accident at age 16 left her with a broken back, effectively ending her dance career.[2] In the years following her recovery, Cairns undertook an extensive eight-year backpacking odyssey through 36 countries, an adventure that exposed her to diverse cultures and individuals, subtly shifting her interests toward other forms of performance.[2] This pivotal turn toward acting occurred serendipitously in India, where she stumbled upon an improv session at an ashram; participating on stage for the first time since seventh grade sparked an immediate connection to the craft. "I ended up getting up on the stage that night and fell in love with acting," Cairns later reflected.[2] Encouraged by an acting instructor at the ashram, she enrolled in a short course there, fostering her burgeoning enthusiasm for acting as a means of storytelling and expression before committing to professional training back in Canada.[2]Personal life
Marriage
Leah Cairns married Kevin Hawryluk on July 24, 2004.[1] The couple's union has endured for over 21 years as of 2025, reflecting a stable and enduring partnership.[1] Cairns has described their relationship as one built on shared experiences, noting in a 2007 interview that she and Hawryluk watched episodes of Battlestar Galactica together on Sunday nights, underscoring his support for her professional endeavors.[2] This long-term commitment has provided a consistent personal foundation amid her acting career.[1]Family
Leah Cairns and Kevin Hawryluk have three children: twin daughters Aura and Kaia, born around 2010, and a son, Bodhi.[6][7] She has occasionally featured her children in public charitable efforts alongside her family.[6] Following her marriage, Cairns has embraced motherhood as a central aspect of her personal life, integrating family responsibilities with her professional commitments as an actress.[8] Extended family connections, including her role within a broader familial network in British Columbia, have provided ongoing support for her personal development through the years.[7]Career
Early career
Leah Cairns began her professional acting career in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she had relocated after initial training experiences abroad. Her entry into the industry was marked by enrollment in local acting classes, building on earlier improv work encountered during travels, which sparked her interest in performance. This foundation in Vancouver's vibrant film and television scene, centered around Canadian productions, provided the platform for her first on-screen opportunities.[9][2] Cairns made her television debut in 2002 with a guest appearance as Girlfriend #1 in the episode "Mysterious Hearts" of the Showtime series The Chris Isaak Show, a minor role that served as her initial credited performance. This early exposure in a lighthearted music-themed comedy helped her gain footing in the competitive Vancouver audition circuit. The following year, she expanded into short films with the role of Sharon in The Mall Man, a 15-minute comedic piece directed by Matthew Blecha, which highlighted her comedic timing in a story about a mall security guard aiding a celebrity couple.[10][11][12] In 2003, Cairns secured another guest spot on television as Julie Spence in the episode "Morning After" of Fox's Tru Calling, portraying a character in a supernatural drama that allowed her to demonstrate dramatic range alongside leads Eliza Dushku and Shawn Hatosy. These roles, primarily in Vancouver-shot productions, reflected her transition from uncredited or improvisational beginnings to established supporting parts in both television and independent shorts, solidifying her presence in the Canadian entertainment industry by 2004.[13][14]Breakthrough with Battlestar Galactica
Leah Cairns landed her breakthrough role as Lieutenant Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson, a skilled Raptor pilot in the Colonial Fleet, in the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series, which aired on Syfy from 2004 to 2009.[15] She first appeared in the season 1 episode "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II," marking her entry as a recurring character across all four seasons, with a total of 35 episodes.[16] The casting came after Cairns auditioned specifically for the part, drawing on her prior experience in smaller television roles to secure the opportunity in this high-profile sci-fi production. During the series' run, she took on concurrent roles including Emily Hollander in Kyle XY (2007–2008) and a supporting part as Sara Pollard in 88 Minutes (2007).[2][1] Racetrack is depicted as a tough, competent officer with a strong disdain for the Cylons, often involved in high-stakes reconnaissance and transport missions aboard her Raptor alongside Eco Karl "Skulls" Agathon.[15] Her character arc evolves from a background pilot in early seasons—participating in pivotal operations like the scouting of Kobol and the integration with the battlestar Pegasus—to a more prominent figure in later episodes, including the perilous "jump" through a star cluster in "The Passage" and the climactic assault on the Cylon colony in the series finale "Daybreak, Parts I and II," where she sacrifices herself in a desperate bid to destroy the enemy.[17] Cairns contributed to the character's development, incorporating subtle improvisations such as an unrequited affection for Lieutenant Karl "Helo" Agathon, inspired by fan fiction she encountered, which added depth to their on-screen dynamic.[18] The role resonated with audiences, earning Racetrack a reputation as a fan-favorite for her resilience and understated heroism amid the fleet's survival struggles.[19] The exposure from Battlestar Galactica significantly elevated Cairns' career, transitioning her from episodic guest appearances in Canadian television to international recognition in genre programming. This momentum contributed to her 2006 Leo Award nomination for Best Supporting Performance by a Female in a Dramatic Series, for her portrayal of Jenna in the episode "Fancy Footwork" of Godiva's, highlighting the broader industry acknowledgment of her growing talent during the height of the series' run.[20]Later roles and projects
Following the conclusion of Battlestar Galactica in 2009, Leah Cairns maintained a steady presence in both film and television, often gravitating toward science fiction and genre projects while expanding into drama and horror. She appeared in two episodes of the web-turned-television series Sanctuary (2007–2008) as Tatha, a role that bridged her earlier work into the early 2010s. This period marked a transition where Cairns balanced recurring television commitments with select film appearances, showcasing her versatility across ensemble casts. In film, Cairns notably played Lois, the wife of Tom Cooper (Casey Affleck's character), in Christopher Nolan's critically acclaimed Interstellar (2014).[21] She later co-starred as Adrianna Sloane in the drama Diminuendo (2018), directed by Adrian Stewart, which explored themes of grief and artificial intelligence and featured her alongside Battlestar Galactica alum Richard Hatch in one of his final roles. Other 2016 projects included the lead role of Darcy in The Wilding and voice work as Jordan Cass in Dead Rising 4.[4] These projects underscored her continued involvement in thoughtful, genre-blending storytelling. On television, Cairns secured a significant recurring role as Kathryn "Kat" MacLaren, the wife of FBI agent Grant MacLaren, in the Netflix sci-fi series Travelers (2016–2018), appearing in 27 episodes across three seasons and earning praise for her portrayal of a supportive yet complex family figure in a time-travel thriller.[22] She also guest-starred as Sasha Rawling in the season 14 episode "Nightmare Logic" of Supernatural (2018), adding to her supernatural genre credentials.[23] In 2017, she took on supporting roles in made-for-TV mysteries, including Detective Lopez in Deadly Sorority and Bess Burns in Dead Over Heels: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery. Cairns further diversified into legal dramas with her performance as Norah in Darrow & Darrow: In the Key of Murder (2018) and Eleanor in Past Malice: An Emma Fielding Mystery (2018). Cairns ventured into horror with her role as Veronica Burke in the Netflix limited series Brand New Cherry Flavor (2021), appearing in four episodes as a production executive entangled in a surreal tale of revenge and body horror.[24] From 2022 to 2025, Cairns has focused on convention appearances, with no major acting credits announced as of November 2025.[25] Her post-Battlestar Galactica career demonstrates sustained engagement in sci-fi, horror, and mystery genres, prioritizing roles that allow for nuanced character development over high-volume output.Filmography
