Early and non-league career (2007–2015)
Lois Paul Maynard was born on 22 January 1989 in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, England.[12] Standing at 1.91 metres tall and right-footed, he began his football journey in local amateur circles, developing as a versatile player capable of operating in central midfield with defensive attributes that would later define his career.[12] Maynard's first organised club involvement came with Daisy Hill from 2007 to 2009, where he gained initial experience in non-league football at the amateur level. He then progressed to Chadderton between 2009 and 2011, continuing to build his skills in the lower tiers of English non-league pyramid. In June 2011, he signed with Flixton, making 32 appearances without scoring during the 2011–12 season, during which he also had a short loan spell to Stocksbridge Park Steels in 2012 that yielded no appearances.[2][13] In 2012, Maynard moved to Winsford United for the 2012–13 season, where he showcased his versatility across defensive and midfield roles, appearing in 39 league matches and scoring 3 goals while helping the team finish fifth in their division.[14] His form earned him a transfer to F.C. Halifax Town in 2013, marking a significant step up. Over two seasons from 2013 to 2015, he made 85 appearances and scored 18 goals, contributing key performances that included goals in competitive fixtures and aiding the club's push in the National League North; his output included 45 matches and 7 goals in 2013–14, followed by 38 matches and 11 goals in 2014–15.[12] This period solidified his reputation as a goal-scoring midfielder with strong physical presence.Tranmere Rovers and Salford City (2015–2020)
In May 2015, Lois Maynard signed a two-year professional contract with Tranmere Rovers after leaving FC Halifax Town, transitioning from part-time football to a full-time environment at Prenton Park.[15][16] This move allowed him to focus entirely on his development as a central midfielder, having previously balanced playing with other commitments at Halifax.[16] During his two seasons with Tranmere from 2015 to 2017, Maynard made 68 appearances and scored 5 goals across all competitions, contributing to the team's push for promotion from the National League.[17] He featured regularly in midfield, providing energy and occasional goals, such as in league matches during the 2015–16 campaign. In the 2016–17 season, Tranmere finished as runners-up in the National League, securing a playoff spot, though they were eliminated in the semi-finals by Aldershot Town; Maynard notably hit the post in the second leg of that tie at Prenton Park.[18] His adaptation to full-time training enhanced his physical presence and tactical awareness, helping him establish himself as a reliable squad member under manager Gary Brabin.[16] In May 2017, Maynard joined Salford City on a free transfer, signing as a key addition to their midfield ahead of the 2017–18 National League North season.[19] Over his tenure from 2017 to January 2020, he recorded 94 appearances and 8 goals, evolving into a more defensively oriented midfielder capable of playing as a centre-back when needed.[20] Under joint managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley, Salford won the National League North title in 2017–18, earning promotion to the National League; Maynard was instrumental in the midfield, starting most matches and contributing to a dominant campaign that saw the team clinch the championship with games to spare.[21][22] The following season, with Graham Alexander as manager, Maynard helped Salford finish seventh in the National League and advance through the playoffs.[4] In the playoff final against AFC Fylde at Wembley Stadium in May 2019, his deflected shot in the first half led to a corner from which Salford scored their second goal in a 3–0 victory, securing promotion to EFL League Two for the first time in the club's history.[23] Maynard's increased defensive responsibilities during this period included breaking up opposition plays and providing leadership in a young squad, as evidenced by his consistent starts in midfield alongside players like Gus Mafuta.[4] In May 2019, he extended his contract with Salford for another season, reflecting his importance to the team's dynamics under Alexander's structured approach.[24]Stockport County, Oldham Athletic, and Radcliffe (2020–present)
In February 2020, Lois Maynard signed for Stockport County from Salford City on a free transfer, marking his return to the National League.[1] He made 24 appearances and scored 1 goal during the 2020/21 season, contributing to the team's solid mid-table finish.[2] In August 2021, Maynard joined Solihull Moors on a season-long loan, where he featured in 30 matches and netted 2 goals across the National League campaign.[2] Although primarily at Solihull, his parent club Stockport secured promotion to the National League as runners-up in 2021/22, providing Maynard with indirect involvement in the achievement before his contract expired that summer. Maynard then moved to Oldham Athletic in July 2022 on a one-year deal, reuniting with former Salford colleagues.[1] His time at the club was limited, with just 9 appearances and no goals in the National League during the 2022/23 season, hampered by competition for places and injury concerns.[2] Oldham finished 12th, and Maynard was among those released at the end of the campaign in May 2023.[25] In July 2023, Maynard signed with Radcliffe FC in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, embracing a role as a versatile defensive midfielder and experienced leader at the seventh-tier club.[1] Over the 2023/24 season, he made 27 appearances and scored 6 goals, helping Radcliffe win promotion to the National League North as champions.[2] The following 2024/25 season saw him feature in 38 matches with 2 goals as Radcliffe adapted to the sixth tier, finishing 20th to secure survival.[2] By November 2025, in the early stages of the 2025/26 National League North season, Maynard had already recorded 11 appearances and 4 goals, including key contributions in midfield orchestration and set-piece delivery.[8] His contract was extended in May 2024 to run until June 2025, with the club activating an option in May 2025 to keep him through the 2025/26 campaign.[26] At 36, Maynard has become a mentor to younger squad members, leveraging his promotion-winning experience to stabilize Radcliffe's defense while transitioning to a more measured playing style in non-league football.[8]International career
Eligibility and debut
Born in Manchester, England, Lois Maynard qualified for Saint Kitts and Nevis through his paternal heritage, as his father was born on the islands, making him eligible under FIFA's eligibility criteria which allow representation of a nation if a biological parent was born there.[27][28] Despite being eligible for England by birth, Maynard opted to represent Saint Kitts and Nevis, a decision facilitated by the fact that he had not competed at a level that would cap-tie him to England under FIFA rules, which permit switches only from non-competitive youth internationals or limited senior appearances before age 21. Maynard received his first call-up to the Saint Kitts and Nevis national team in November 2015 for a pair of friendlies during a European tour, shortly after establishing himself in the English National League with Tranmere Rovers. He made his debut on 12 November 2015, starting as a defensive midfielder in a 1–0 victory over Andorra in Andorra la Vella, contributing to a solid defensive performance that secured the clean sheet. Five days later, on 17 November, he earned his second cap in a 3–0 defeat to Estonia in Tallinn, where he captained the side despite the loss, showcasing his leadership potential early on.[29] In 2016, Maynard adapted swiftly to the international stage, becoming a regular in the defensive midfield role during the CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers. He featured in key matches, including wins over Aruba (2–0 on 26 March), Antigua and Barbuda (1–0 on 29 March), Suriname (1–0 on 1 June), and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (1–0 on 7 June), helping Saint Kitts and Nevis advance through their group and playoff stages to qualify for their first-ever Gold Cup appearance. His initial eight caps highlighted a strong adaptation, with Maynard noted for his defensive solidity and impact in anchoring the midfield against higher-ranked opponents.[2][27]Personal life
Family
Lois Maynard was born on 22 January 1989 in Cheetham Hill, a suburb of Manchester known for its rich multicultural fabric shaped by successive waves of immigration from the Caribbean, South Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe since the mid-20th century.[30] This diverse environment, where up to 150 languages are spoken in a small area, features a vibrant community of varied cultural heritages.[31] Maynard's immediate family hails from mixed origins, with his father originating from Saint Kitts and Nevis, which provided the familial connection granting him eligibility to represent the Caribbean nation internationally.[10] This heritage played a pivotal role in his decision to debut for Saint Kitts and Nevis in 2015, embracing his roots despite being born and raised in England. The family's support has been evident throughout his career transitions, from non-league clubs to professional moves, offering stability and encouragement during relocations across northern England. Among his extended family, Maynard is the cousin of renowned footballer Marcus Rashford, the Manchester United and England forward, sharing a close bond through their maternal lineage via Rashford's mother, Melanie Maynard. Growing up together in Manchester, Maynard witnessed Rashford's prodigious talent from as early as age seven or eight, attending his youth matches and drawing inspiration from his cousin's dedication and rise to stardom, though their professional paths diverged significantly with Rashford pursuing elite European football while Maynard built a career in lower leagues. The family dynamic, marked by mutual pride, has motivated Maynard in his own endeavors, with Rashford's achievements serving as an early exposure to the professional game's demands without direct collaboration.[11]Other activities
In addition to his football career, Lois Maynard has established himself as a fitness coach in Manchester, founding LMFIT to provide personalized training programs.[32] The business offers one-on-one sessions, small group training, and athlete-specific programs focused on football performance, strength and conditioning, fat loss, mindset development, and nutrition guidance, operating from a private facility in Salford that accommodates all fitness levels.[33] Maynard began this venture as a side pursuit during the later stages of his playing career around 2020, leveraging his professional athletic background to build credibility in coaching footballers and general clients.[34] Maynard maintains an active social media presence on Instagram under @lo.maynard.fitness, where he has amassed over 3,600 followers by promoting training tips, motivational content on mindset and nutrition, and client progress updates as of 2025.[32] Through the platform, he endorses products via partnerships, such as offering a 20% discount code 'LOMAYNARDFITNESS' for Applied Nutrition supplements to support his clients' nutritional needs.[33] This online engagement helps balance his coaching with ongoing football commitments, allowing him to expand his reach while preparing for post-playing stability.[35]Honours
