Early years
Luke Baines was born on June 8, 1990, in Hyde, Greater Manchester, England.[7][8] His family immigrated to Australia when he was young, and he was raised in the Sydney suburb of Cronulla.[7][9] Baines grew up with three older sisters, including actresses Penny McNamee and Jessica McNamee, and both his parents, all of whom reside in Australia.[10][11] From an early age, he showed interest in the arts, beginning acting lessons at five years old through local activities in Australia.[12]Education
Baines attended The McDonald College of Performing Arts, a selective full-time institution in Sydney, New South Wales, where he received classical training in drama and music during his high school years.[13] This specialized education emphasized performance disciplines, providing a foundational grounding in the arts that aligned with his early interest in acting.[7] Following his graduation from performing arts college, Baines pursued higher education in a different field, earning a Bachelor of Communications (Business) from Bond University in Queensland, Australia.[14] His studies equipped him with practical business acumen alongside his artistic background.[15] This dual educational path bridged Baines' training in performing arts with business-oriented skills, enabling him to navigate the professional demands of acting while later expanding into writing and filmmaking.[15] The combination has supported his multifaceted career, as evidenced by his transition from corporate roles in crisis management to creative pursuits.[15]Acting career
Early roles
Prior to his screen debut, Baines began his professional career in theater and musical theater in Australia. Baines began his professional acting career as a teenager in Australia, debuting on television in the long-running soap opera Home and Away. He portrayed the character Cameron in several episodes during 2004, including Episode #1.3812 and Episode #1.3814, marking his first credited role at the age of 14.[16] This appearance provided him with initial exposure in the competitive Australian television landscape, where soap operas like Home and Away often served as launching pads for emerging talent.[3] After completing his secondary education at The McDonald College of Performing Arts, Baines briefly stepped away from acting to pursue higher education, earning a Bachelor of Communications (Business) from Bond University.[14] His communications background aided in networking within the industry upon his return, facilitating auditions and connections that supported his transition from student to professional actor. During this period, he worked in corporate communications and crisis management, honing skills that later informed his multifaceted career.[15] Leading up to 2014, Baines secured minor roles in Australian-linked productions, including a small part as a waiter in the biographical drama Saving Mr. Banks (2013), which was partially filmed in Sydney.[17] These early credits highlighted his versatility in both television and film while navigating the challenges of breaking into Australia's entertainment scene, where opportunities for young actors were often concentrated in soaps and limited independent projects.[2]Breakthrough roles
In pursuit of broader acting opportunities, Baines relocated from Australia to Los Angeles in his early twenties, around 2011, following initial roles in Australian television.[18] This move marked a pivotal shift from local soap opera work, such as his appearance on Home and Away, to the competitive U.S. film and television landscape.[3] Baines made his Hollywood debut in 2015 with the role of Tom, one of the psychopathic serial killers, in Wes Craven's final directorial effort, The Girl in the Photographs. The horror thriller, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, featured Baines alongside Kal Penn and Claudia Lee, and highlighted his ability to portray chilling antagonists in a narrative inspired by real-life serial killings.[18] Working closely with Craven during production, Baines described the experience as transformative, noting the director's mentorship in refining his performance amid the film's intense psychological themes.[19] Baines' profile rose significantly with his casting as the reincarnated Jonathan Morgenstern—Clary Fray's villainous brother—in the final arc of Shadowhunters season 3B, appearing in 12 episodes from 2018 to 2019. Replacing Will Tudor in the role, Baines brought a layered intensity to the character, blending charm and menace in storylines involving demonic resurrection and family betrayal, which resonated with the show's dedicated fanbase.[1] The series' passionate supporters amplified his visibility through social media campaigns and attendance at conventions like The Land Con and Mortal Hunters, where he engaged in Q&A panels and photo ops, fostering a growing international following.[20] Baines has credited the role with expanding his career reach, including partnerships with organizations like Oxfam, as the Shadowhunters community proved instrumental in advocating for social causes.[21] Amid these breakthroughs, Baines took on supporting roles that showcased his versatility, such as a cameo appearance as himself in the 2014 romantic drama The Ever After, and in 2018, he starred as Alex in the indie thriller A Dark Place, portraying a young man rebuilding his life after personal failures; Baines drew from his own experiences with broken relationships to infuse authenticity into the character's emotional turmoil and path to redemption.[22][23]Recent work
Following the conclusion of Shadowhunters in 2019, Baines' portrayal of the antagonistic Jonathan Morgenstern continued to influence casting opportunities in genre projects, drawing him into high-profile franchises. In 2020, he made his entry into the Star Wars universe as an Imperial shuttle pilot in the second season of Disney+'s The Mandalorian, appearing in the episode "Chapter 16: The Rescue" where his character is part of a tense Imperial operation. That same year, Baines guest-starred as the Chronicom operative Luke in the Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., contributing to the show's final season arc involving time-travel threats. He also appeared as the ghostly John "Johnny Mac" MacDonald in episodes of Nancy Drew, blending supernatural elements with mystery. Baines expanded into horror with his lead role as Kurt in the 2022 thriller Bunker, directed by Adrian Langley, which follows World War I soldiers trapped underground and confronting a malevolent force; the film, produced by Red Hound Films and XYZ Films, received a limited theatrical release in the United States on February 24, 2023.[24] In 2025, he starred as the notorious serial killer Alexander Spesivtsev in the independent horror film No Tears in Hell, directed by Michael Caissie and based on real events in Russia, where a mother and son lure and murder vulnerable individuals; the movie premiered to critical attention for its grim atmosphere.[4] Additionally, Baines portrayed Jacques, a fugitive entangled in a road-trip narrative of faith and redemption, in the dark comedy Crystal Cross, which debuted at the Austin Film Festival in October 2025 and features original music by the band Guards.[25] This period reflects Baines' evolution toward diverse genres, particularly horror and sci-fi, allowing him to explore complex antagonists while balancing his burgeoning writing career, including the 2024 release of his debut young adult novel.[26] Throughout 2025, he remained engaged with fans, reuniting with Shadowhunters co-stars Katherine McNamara and Dominic Sherwood at Creation Entertainment's Vampire Fan Weekend in Dallas, Texas, on March 29, where they participated in panels and photo ops celebrating supernatural television.Writing career
Debut novel
Luke Baines published his debut novel, In Scientia, under the pseudonym L.J. Baines in February 2024 through Not From Here Entertainment.[27] The choice of pen name allowed Baines to explore the young adult (YA) fiction genre separately from his acting persona, aligning with the book's target audience of teen readers interested in fantasy romance. The novel is a contemporary YA fantasy centered on protagonist Eva Nelson, who relocates to New York for her senior year of high school and becomes enamored with a enigmatic boy. This romance unveils family secrets, drawing her into an elite, hidden society of magic when she travels to London to meet her unknown relatives, blending elements of forbidden love, suspense, and magical discovery.[27] The story emphasizes themes of identity and self-discovery, reflecting Baines' personal life transitions during a period of career and personal growth.[26] Baines drew inspiration for In Scientia from his scriptwriting experience in film, such as co-writing the horror comedy Untitled Horror Movie, adapting those narrative skills to prose. He wrote the book during downtime from acting commitments, fulfilling a lifelong dream of authorship in the YA space, where he could infuse personal reflections on discovery and relationships.[26] Baines has confirmed that a sequel to In Scientia is in development.[28] Upon release, In Scientia received positive reception for its addictive pacing and romantic tension, earning an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 on Goodreads based on reader reviews praising the immersive world-building.[29] Fellow actor Claire Holt, known from The Originals, endorsed the novel on her blog, highlighting its engaging qualities and recommending it to fans of fantasy romance.[30] Baines promoted the book through events, including appearances at fan conventions in 2025, such as Vampire Fan Weekend in Dallas.[31]Other projects
In addition to his acting and novel-writing pursuits, Baines identifies as a filmmaker, having co-founded the branded content production company Go Forth Content with actors Rachael Taylor and Tahyna Tozzi.[13] This venture allows him to explore producing and scriptwriting for short-form projects, drawing on his early career experiences in independent films. For instance, during the production of the 2017 short film Waste, in which he starred, Baines contributed off-camera insights informed by his growing interest in content creation.[32] Baines leverages his Bachelor of Communications (Business) from Bond University to inform his scriptwriting for personal projects, often developing narratives that blend genre elements like horror and drama.[14] His most notable screenplay credit is the 2021 horror comedy Untitled Horror Movie, which he co-wrote with director Nick Simon; the film satirizes low-budget horror production and features Baines in the lead role as Declan, a screenwriter navigating chaotic filmmaking.[33] This project exemplifies his hands-on approach, where writing intersects with performance to shape intimate, collaborative endeavors. As of 2025, Baines has discussed ongoing writing efforts in interviews, emphasizing scripts that allow him to "attack a story from a different angle" during periods of downtime from acting commitments.[34] These pursuits highlight how he uses breaks between roles to advance creative development, fostering a multifaceted career that extends beyond traditional on-screen work.Personal life
Family background
Luke Baines possesses English heritage through his parents and was raised in a distinctly Northern English household, even while spending significant time in Australia during his youth.[18] In adulthood, he maintains a close relationship with his three older sisters, all of whom continue to reside in Australia alongside his parents, a dynamic that underscores his ongoing ties to his roots despite his base in the United States.[10][2] Baines' multicultural upbringing across the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States has significantly influenced his worldview, instilling a sense of displacement that he describes as feeling like an "odd man out," while enhancing his adaptability for a mobile acting career that spans continents.[18] Early family dynamics, marked by his persistent performances that his sisters viewed as attention-seeking, helped cultivate his passion for the arts.[2]Public statements on sexuality
On June 26, 2022, during Pride Month, Luke Baines publicly shared his experiences with love and identity via an Instagram post, stating, "I’ve been lucky enough to have been in love twice – the first with a woman, the second with a man. Label that however you like, but all I know is that… love is love. Happy pride!"[35] The post included two black-and-white photographs symbolizing his past relationships: one depicting shadows holding hands on a concrete floor with the words "F*ck, I think I love you" etched nearby, and another showing a woman's hand holding a note reading "You are perfect to me."[36] Baines did not name his partners, emphasizing a personal reflection rather than specifics. In the statement, Baines identified himself as part of the LGBTQ+ community while rejecting rigid labels, instead promoting the fluidity of love and identity with his assertion that love transcends categorization.[37] This approach resonated with broader themes of inclusivity, particularly given his role in Shadowhunters, a series known for its prominent LGBTQ+ representation, such as the relationship between characters Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood.[35] The post received widespread positive support from fans and media outlets, with comments from followers expressing pride and affection, such as "Happy pride my love" and "Okay, I am cryin over this."[36] Co-stars from Shadowhunters, including Dominic Sherwood and Alberto Rosende, also voiced encouragement, with Sherwood writing, "So proud of you, brother!! Happy Pride. Love you," and Rosende adding, "So happy for you buddy! Happy Pride!"[36] Since 2022, Baines has not provided updates on his current relationship status, consistently maintaining privacy on personal matters.[2]Philanthropy and activism
Baines is a longtime supporter of Oxfam America, having been involved for over a decade as of 2025. He advocates for humanitarian causes, including efforts to end poverty and support migration crises, as well as climate justice initiatives.[2][14][21]Filmography
