Season 1

[edit]

On 5 October 2018, Vikas Gupta released the first promo of Ace of Space 1.[7]

Eighteen contestants fought it out in six rooms to win the audiences' hearts and space in the house. They had to perform difficult tasks to ensure survival.[8] After 71 days, the contestant with the highest votes and space walked away with the title of Ace of Space.[9]

As the mastermind of the show, it will be pretty exciting to play with the minds of contestants and bring out the basic instinct of survival to mark one's territory using your heart and brain equally.

Season 2

[edit]

On 3 August 2019, Vikas Gupta shared the first promo of Ace of Space 2.[11]

Eighteen contestants were divided into two sections: Team Kings, who had access to luxuries and Team Jacks, who did not have access to even basic necessities.[12] They had to perform tasks and manage survival for 72 days. Coupled with this, the season had an enhanced digital interaction.[13]

Ace of Space 1 was an experimental show which did extremely well, and we succeeded in making our way into our viewers heart, as we tested the houseguests and made them choose between head and heart. With the second season it’s going to be more tough and challenging as I will be testing their beliefs and conditioning.

Ace of Quarantine

Overview

Premise and format

MTV Ace of Space is an Indian reality television series broadcast on MTV , in which a group of contestants are confined to a house divided into six rooms, challenging their survival instincts through physical, mental, and strategic tasks inspired by the dystopian survival themes of . The core premise centers on the competition for basic space as a , with the house designed to simulate escalating confinement and pressure, forcing participants to navigate interpersonal dynamics and high-stakes decisions in isolation. The format involves 18 contestants competing over several weeks for limited space and resources within the house, divided into "Haves," who enjoyed luxuries, and "Have-Nots," who faced deprivations. Weekly tasks dictate room allocations, resource distribution, and potential eliminations, with contestants nominating peers and audience voting through the app playing a pivotal role in evictions and ultimately deciding the final winner based on public support. While cash prizes have been awarded to past winners—such as ₹7 in the first season—the emphasis remains on earning the title of "" and demonstrating personal growth amid adversity, rather than financial rewards alone. Unique mechanics heighten the drama, including interventions from the mastermind host who manipulates challenges and reveals to steer the game's direction, alongside the periodic shrinking of rooms to intensify confinement. These elements underscore strategic gameplay and psychological endurance as central to the competition. The format evolved from an experimental setup in the first season, which introduced the shrinking house and core survival rules, to a refined version in the second season featuring additional twists, more intense contestant interactions, and adjustments to group dynamics for greater unpredictability.

Hosts and broadcast

Vikas Gupta served as the creator, mastermind, and primary host for both seasons of MTV Ace of Space, overseeing the show's dramatic twists and contestant interactions from 2018 to 2019. Known for his interventions that heightened tension, such as revealing contestants' backstories and delivering impactful announcements, Gupta's hosting style emphasized emotional depth and strategic gameplay. The series aired on , with Season 1 premiering on October 20, 2018, and Season 2 on August 24, 2019, both running daily at 6 PM IST. Episodes typically lasted around 45 minutes, spanning approximately 70 to 80 per season to cover the full competition duration. Viewers could stream episodes, participate in voting, and access exclusive content via the platform, enhancing audience engagement. International availability was primarily limited to , with no major syndication deals abroad, though select clips and promotional segments were shared on for global access. The show featured occasional celebrity guest appearances for special tasks, such as actress , who participated in promotional activities and challenges during Season 1, but maintained no recurring co-hosts.

Production

Development

MTV Ace of Space was created by producer and television personality Vikas Gupta in 2018 as an experimental reality competition series for MTV India. Drawing inspiration from global formats such as The Hunger Games for its survival elements and shows like Survivor for endurance challenges, the concept blended psychological confinement akin to Bigg Boss with interpersonal drama reminiscent of MTV Splitsvilla. Gupta, who had recently appeared as a contestant on Bigg Boss 11, pitched the show as a high-stakes game of manipulation and self-discovery, where contestants would be locked in a confined space under his oversight as the "mastermind" host. The series was commissioned by , a channel targeting urban youth demographics through innovative, youth-centric programming. The initial pitch emphasized intense psychological tension and strategic gameplay over purely romantic narratives, aiming to captivate a Gen Z audience with its mix of drama, alliances, and betrayals in a controlled environment. This alignment with MTV's focus on engaging young viewers through bold, interactive content helped secure quick approval for production. Season 1, airing from October to December 2018, served as a proof-of-concept that exceeded expectations in viewer engagement, prompting to greenlight Season 2 within months. The second installment, launched in August 2019, featured 18 participants and intensified drama with reduced living space to heighten conflicts, reflecting the network's confidence in the format's appeal. Plans for a third season emerged in 2021, with initially approached but unavailable due to commitments on his directorial debut film; actor , winner of 13, was set to replace him as host. However, Shukla's sudden death in September 2021 halted development, and as of 2025, no further seasons were produced. Production faced several challenges, including casting hurdles where high-profile figures like were approached to host but the role went to , and instances of contestants withdrawing mid-season due to interpersonal tensions. The 2020 spin-off, Ace the Quarantine, adapted the format for the lockdown by shifting to remote, audience-participatory tasks hosted by Season 1 winner and finalist Varun Sood, incorporating strict health protocols to ensure safe virtual engagement amid the pandemic.

Filming and locations

The filming of MTV Ace of Space was handled by production company Shine India in a custom-built house set located in , . The house was intentionally designed with spatial constraints to heighten tension among contestants, featuring six themed rooms—including a Mastermind’s Room, Gymnasium Room, Servants Room, Living Room, Bathroom, and Kids Room—each offering varying levels of luxury and basic amenities, such as sleeping in bathtubs or on gym benches. One of the rooms, such as the Gymnasium Room, measured approximately 18 feet by 18 feet, with elements like shrinking walls to induce conflict, and was equipped with surveillance cameras for comprehensive monitoring. Filming occurred 24/7 with minimal crew presence to maintain an immersive environment. Each season was shot continuously over 70-73 days, allowing for daily episodes that were edited overnight for broadcast. Enhanced safety protocols were introduced following injuries during physical tasks in Season 2. Technical production utilized high-definition cameras throughout the house for capturing footage, with select live feeds available on the streaming platform to provide viewers real-time access to key moments. Post-production emphasized dramatic editing techniques to underscore alliances, conflicts, and eviction sequences, ensuring episodes aligned with the show's survival theme.

Culturally, the show was praised for its innovative confinement-based format, drawing inspiration from survival games like to engage a young audience with strategic challenges and interpersonal drama. It received mixed reception, reflected in its IMDb rating of 4.2/10 from 70 user reviews, with critiques often centering on the balance between scripted elements and participant authenticity. While it earned no major awards, the series is credited with revitalizing India's reality TV lineup by attracting youth demographics through high-stakes tasks. Former contestant has defended its genuineness, stating that the dynamics emerged organically from real personalities rather than heavy scripting. Plans for a third season in 2021, initially set to feature Sidharth Shukla as host after Vikas Gupta stepped away for film commitments, were abandoned following Shukla's sudden death from a heart attack on September 2, 2021. MTV shifted focus to established formats like Splitsvilla amid a crowded reality TV market, with no revival announced as of 2025 due to oversaturation of similar competition shows. The show's confined environment influenced subsequent Indian reality formats emphasizing isolation and alliances, such as elements in later iterations. Fan discussions frequently highlight debates on its drama's authenticity, contributing to ongoing conversations about reality TV's emotional realism.
