Early life
Miguel Changa Chaiwa was born on 7 June 2004 in Luanshya, Zambia.[1][7] Luanshya, an industrial mining town on Zambia's Copperbelt province, has long been a hub for football culture, with the sport emerging as a key leisure activity among mining communities since the mid-20th century, fostering local passion for the game amid the region's economic reliance on copper production.[8][9] Chaiwa was raised by his father, Changa Chaiwa, a former professional footballer who played as a winger for Power Dynamos in the Zambia Super League, and his mother, Florence Mulenga.[10][11] His father's career in the sport provided an early inspiration for Chaiwa's interest in football, instilling lessons on passion and commitment from a young age.[11]Youth career in Zambia
Miguel Chaiwa began his youth football career in Zambia with Atletico Lusaka, joining the club's academy as a young prospect and developing his foundational skills there until 2020.[1] He then moved to Shamuel Academy in 2020, where he continued his progression as a defensive midfielder and emerged as a standout talent in the Zambian youth system.[1][12] His early development benefited from the guidance of his father, Changa Chaiwa, a former professional winger for Power Dynamos in the Zambia Super League, who served as a key mentor in his training.[10] In February 2022, at the age of 17, Chaiwa returned to Atletico Lusaka on a short-term loan from Shamuel Academy, gaining additional competitive experience in local youth matches and leagues until May.[13] His strong performances during this stint drew interest from international scouts, leading to his transfer to Swiss club BSC Young Boys on June 14, 2022, where he signed a four-year professional contract at age 18.Club career
Young Boys
Miguel Chaiwa signed with BSC Young Boys on 14 June 2022 at the age of 18, agreeing to a four-year contract and initially joining the club's U19 team to continue his development in European football.[12] Chaiwa was promoted to the first team during the 2022–23 season, making his professional debut on 21 July 2022 in a UEFA Europa Conference League qualifier against FK Liepāja, where he came on as a substitute in a 1–0 away victory. His Swiss Super League debut followed shortly after, and he went on to feature in 11 league matches that season, starting six of them as Young Boys clinched the league title.[12] Notable appearances included his Champions League group stage debut on 20 September 2023 against Red Star Belgrade, becoming the youngest Zambian to play in the competition at 19 years and three months old; he also featured against Manchester City and RB Leipzig in the same campaign.[14] As a defensive midfielder, Chaiwa contributed to Young Boys' midfield stability by focusing on ball recovery, positional discipline, and supporting defensive transitions, often deployed in a double pivot to shield the backline during high-pressing phases. Over his tenure with the first team from 2022 to 2025, he made 34 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing no assists, with his limited starts reflecting intense competition in the midfield.[15] Due to restricted playing time amid a crowded squad, Chaiwa was loaned out to FC Schaffhausen in February 2024 to gain more consistent minutes in the Swiss Challenge League.[16]Loan to Schaffhausen
In January 2024, following limited opportunities at BSC Young Boys, Miguel Chaiwa joined FC Schaffhausen on a short-term loan from the Swiss Super League club to the second-tier Challenge League, aiming to secure more playing time and gain competitive experience.[12] The agreement, finalized on February 14, 2024, lasted until the end of the 2023/24 season in June 2024, allowing the 19-year-old Zambian midfielder to adapt to regular senior football in a demanding environment.[17] Chaiwa made an immediate impact during his debut on February 22, 2024, contributing crucially to Schaffhausen's 1-0 victory by demonstrating strong defensive positioning and ball recovery skills in midfield.[18] Over the course of the loan, he earned his first consistent senior starts, appearing in 14 matches (starting 8 of them) and accumulating 1,159 minutes on the pitch, without scoring or providing assists.[19] Standout performances included a full 90-minute display in a key league fixture against FC Aarau on March 15, 2024, where his decision-making in transitions helped maintain Schaffhausen's structure.[20] The loan proved instrumental in Chaiwa's development, offering him significantly more minutes than at Young Boys—where he had only sporadic substitute roles—and enhancing his physicality, tactical awareness, and ability to handle the intensity of weekly matches in the Challenge League.[12] Upon returning to BSC Young Boys in June 2024 for pre-season training ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, the club evaluated his progress but opted not to extend the arrangement, prioritizing his integration back into the first-team squad.[21]Hibernian
In the summer of 2025, Hibernian FC secured the services of 21-year-old Zambian defensive midfielder Miguel Chaiwa from Swiss Super League club BSC Young Boys on August 8, for an undisclosed fee, with his market value estimated at €1.20 million.[22][3][2] Chaiwa signed a three-year contract, becoming head coach David Gray's sixth signing of the transfer window and opting for Hibs despite interest from several European clubs.[23][3] His prior loan experience at FC Schaffhausen in the Swiss Challenge League helped facilitate a swift integration into the squad.[22] Chaiwa made his debut for Hibernian on August 17, 2025, in a 2-0 victory over Livingston in the Premier Sports Cup group stage, where he came off the bench and impressed with his energy in midfield.[24][25] He earned his first start two days later against the same opponent in another cup match, contributing to a clean sheet and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to "give everything" on the pitch.[26] Under Gray's tactics, Chaiwa has been deployed primarily as a dynamic defensive midfielder, with the coach noting his "too much energy" for a purely holding role and instead utilizing him in a more advanced, box-to-box capacity to support transitions.[27] During the 2025-26 Scottish Premiership season, Chaiwa has featured in eight league matches by early November, starting four and accumulating 429 minutes, while making additional appearances in cup competitions and Europe for a total of 12 outings across all fronts.[28][29] His contributions have centered on providing defensive solidity and midfield drive, highlighted by his first goal for the club on 29 August 2025, coming off the bench to score against Legia Warszawa in the UEFA Conference League qualifying play-off second leg, though Hibernian were eliminated 4–5 on aggregate.[30] He has not recorded assists in league play but has been instrumental in Hibs' improved form, including a 3-0 away win over St Mirren on October 26, where he earned a 7.6 Sofascore rating for his tackling and forward surges.[31] Adapting to Scottish football has presented Chaiwa with challenges such as the league's high pace, physical demands, and tactical intensity, compounded by the colder weather compared to his experiences in Zambia and Switzerland.[26][32] Despite this, his transition has been relatively smooth, aided by Gray's supportive approach, with Chaiwa noting the need to "adapt quickly" while praising the manager's guidance in November interviews.[33] Successes include consistent performances in Premiership fixtures, such as a 6.77 WhoScored rating in a 2-2 draw at Livingston on November 1, where he completed 85% of his passes and won key duels.[34] As of November 14, 2025, Chaiwa remains a regular squad member for Hibernian, with 12 total appearances across competitions and no reported injuries, positioning him as a key prospect for the team's mid-table push in the Premiership.[15] His recent form suggests growing confidence, and with the season ongoing, he is expected to build on his role, potentially attracting further international attention for Zambia.[33][35]International career
Youth international career
Chaiwa's youth international career commenced with the Zambia under-17 national team, where he earned his first call-up for the 2019 COSAFA Under-17 Championship hosted in Malawi from 11 to 21 October. As captain, he led the team through the tournament, contributing defensively and offensively in key matches, including scoring the opening goal via a header from a corner kick in the 10th minute of the semi-final against South Africa, which Zambia won 7-0.[36] The side advanced to the final and secured the title with a 1-0 victory over Mozambique, marking Zambia's first win in the competition and highlighting Chaiwa's leadership at age 15.[37][38] The following year, Chaiwa continued to feature prominently for the under-17s at the 2020 COSAFA Under-17 Championship in South Africa, again as a key squad member and wearing the captain's armband in several fixtures.[39] Zambia demonstrated dominance in group stages, including a 6-2 win over Malawi, before defeating Angola 2-1 in the semi-final, but lost the final 1-1 (2-4 on penalties) to South Africa.[40][41] These performances underscored his role in Zambia's youth setup, with standout defensive plays and set-piece contributions. Over his under-17 tenure from 2019 to 2020, Chaiwa amassed approximately 15 appearances, including tournament starts and leadership duties, though exact goal tallies remain limited to his confirmed strikes in qualifiers and the 2019 semi-final. His consistent performances in these regional tournaments, combined with emerging club form at Young Boys, facilitated his transition to the senior national team, earning a first call-up for training and a debut in a friendly against Iraq on 18 March 2022.Senior international career
Chaiwa received his first senior call-up to the Zambia national team in March 2022 and made his debut on 18 March 2022 in a friendly match against Iraq, starting and playing the full 90 minutes in a 3–1 defeat.[42] This appearance marked the culmination of his youth international progression, positioning him as an emerging talent in the defensive midfield.[43] In major tournaments, Chaiwa featured prominently during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (held in 2024), where he made two appearances in the group stage: 3 minutes as a substitute against Tanzania in a 1–1 draw on 21 January 2024 and a full 90 minutes against Morocco in a 0–1 loss on 24 January 2024, earning praise for his composure despite limited time in the former.[42] He contributed to Zambia's qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations through starts against Ivory Coast (0–2 loss on 6 September 2024) and Sierra Leone (3–2 win on 10 September 2024), plus 26 minutes against Chad (0–0 draw on 11 October 2024).[43] In World Cup qualifiers, Chaiwa started all three of his appearances in the 2023–2026 cycle up to September 2025—90 minutes each against Morocco (1–2 loss on 7 June 2024), Tanzania (0–1 loss on 11 June 2024), and Morocco again (0–2 loss on 8 September 2025)—totaling 270 minutes and focusing on defensive stability.[42][44] He also appeared for 78 minutes in a 1–3 friendly loss to South Africa on 15 November 2025.[42] Throughout his senior international tenure, Chaiwa has primarily operated as a defensive midfielder, tasked with breaking up opposition plays, distributing from deep, and providing cover for the backline; he has occasionally shifted to central defense or right back for tactical flexibility.[1] Notable contributions include key tackles and interceptions in qualifiers, though he has yet to score or assist at the senior level.[43] As of 16 November 2025, Chaiwa has earned 14 caps for Zambia, with 0 goals.[42]Personal life
Family background
Miguel Chaiwa was born on 7 June 2004 in Luanshya, a town in Zambia's Copperbelt Province historically dominated by copper mining, which has shaped the local economy and community life.[1][45] The family resided in this industrial area during his early years, where the mining sector provided the primary economic backbone, supporting livelihoods amid fluctuations in global copper prices.[46] His father, Changa Chaiwa (also known as Christopher Changa Chaiwa), was a professional footballer who played as a winger for Power Dynamos in the Zambia Super League during his youth career and later joined Green Buffaloes FC, prompting the family's relocation to Lusaka.[10][47] Chaiwa's mother, Florence Chaiwa, offered steady support for the family's daily life and his initial involvement in sports before her death from cancer in June 2025.[10][48] No public information is available regarding siblings.Father's influence and personal challenges
Miguel Chaiwa's father, Changa Chaiwa, a former professional winger for Zambian club Power Dynamos, has been a pivotal mentor in his son's football journey, providing constant feedback after matches and instilling a deep sense of discipline. Changa emphasizes the importance of approaching the game with passion, commitment, and meticulous attention to detail, lessons Miguel credits for shaping his professional mindset. As Miguel describes, "He's more like a leader, my mentor," highlighting the father's role in guiding him through the rigors of a career abroad.[33][10] Stories of Changa's own resilience have profoundly influenced Miguel's perseverance, particularly the anecdote of his father playing a full match with a broken leg, fashioning a makeshift splint from wooden planks to stay on the pitch. Though Miguel never witnessed his father's playing days firsthand, these tales—shared by Changa's former teammates—underscore a legacy of toughness and dedication that Miguel draws upon during challenging moments in his career. Changa's example of continuing to compete despite severe injury has taught Miguel to prioritize mental fortitude, reinforcing that "you have to do it with passion, with commitment. Everything, the little details matter." This paternal guidance has cultivated Miguel's dynamic, box-to-box playing style and his ability to push through adversity at Hibernian.[33][10] The tragic passing of Miguel's mother, Florence Mulenga Chaiwa, from cancer in June 2025—just a month before his transfer to Hibernian—marked a profound personal challenge, amplifying his emotional drive to succeed in her memory. Florence, whom Miguel affectionately called "the boss of the house," was a pillar of strength whose unwavering support for his football dreams fueled his early motivation; her loss has transformed into a source of resilience, pushing him to honor her through intensified dedication on the field. Despite the grief, Miguel has leaned on familial bonds for support, with his father's ongoing phone calls offering encouragement during his adaptation to life in Scotland. This blend of loss and enduring paternal influence has honed Miguel's mental toughness, enabling him to channel family tragedies into a relentless work ethic that defines his professional growth.[10]Career statistics
