View on Wikipedia
Newsted is an American heavy metal band formed in October 2012. The first lineup was led by Jason Newsted (former member of Metallica, Flotsam and Jetsam, and Voivod) on bass and lead vocals, along with drummer Jesus Mendez Jr., guitarist Jessie Farnsworth,[1][2] with Staind guitarist Mike Mushok joining in 2013.[3] The band released the four-song EP Metal (recorded before Mushok had joined) on January 8, 2013,[4] and followed up with the full-length debut album Heavy Metal Music on August 6, 2013.[5] Guitarist Mushok stated that there were no plans for the band to regroup for any further touring or recording, explaining that Jason Newsted "shut down" the project in early 2014.[6] Newsted broke silence in 2016 to explain having been overwhelmed with projects.[7]
Key Information
In April 2023, Newsted announced reactivating the band with a new show on May 20 at Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.[8] The band, featuring new guitarist Humberto Perez replacing Mushok, played their first show since August 2013, on May 20, 2023, at Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdalle, Florida, featuring 4 old Newsted songs, Metallica, Motörhead and Ted Nugent covers and debuting 12 new songs.[9]

Formation (2012)
Jason Newsted, who had served as the bassist for Metallica from October 1986 until his departure in January 2001, sought a fresh creative outlet in heavy metal following his tenure with the band and a subsequent stint with Voivod from 2002 to 2008. After leaving Metallica, Newsted explored other projects, including the short-lived Echobrain, but by late 2011, his guest appearance at Metallica's 30th anniversary shows reignited his passion for raw metal music. This experience, coupled with years of informal jamming, motivated him to form a new power trio dedicated to unfiltered heavy metal expression.[6][7][8] In October 2012, Newsted officially formed the band in California, assembling an initial lineup featuring himself on bass and lead vocals, guitarist Jessie Farnsworth, and drummer Jesus Mendez Jr., whom he had known since the 1990s, when Mendez worked as crew for Metallica and later as drum tech for Newsted's band Echobrain.[9] The group coalesced at Newsted's Chophouse Studio, with early recording sessions extending into the Creation Lab in Turlock, California, during October 5–12. Drawing from his extensive background, Newsted aimed to capture a visceral, "fast and ugly" sound reminiscent of early thrash metal, prioritizing original compositions over commercial constraints.[8][10][11] The band's initial goals centered on self-production to maintain artistic control and independence from major labels, releasing music directly through platforms like iTunes under Newsted's Chophouse Records imprint. Rehearsals began with improvisational sessions at Chophouse, evolving into focused songwriting by mid-2012, where the trio developed 11 tracks emphasizing riff-driven heavy metal inspired by classic influences like Metallica's Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning. Newsted contributed lyrics rooted in personal poetry, ensuring the material reflected a raw, meaningful heavy metal ethos without external interference.[8][11][12]Rise and debut release (2013)
Following the formation of the core trio in late 2012, Newsted quickly advanced into recording and releasing material. The band self-released their debut EP, Metal, on January 8, 2013, available initially through digital platforms like iTunes. The four-track effort featured aggressive heavy metal tracks such as "Soldierhead," "Godsnake," "King of the Underdogs," and "Skyscraper," showcasing Jason Newsted's prominent bass lines and vocals alongside guitarist Jessie Farnsworth and drummer Jesus Mendez Jr. Recorded prior to any lineup expansions, the EP captured the band's raw, thrash-influenced sound and marked their entry into the contemporary metal scene.[13][14][15] Building momentum from the EP, Newsted signed with Chophouse Records for wider distribution and entered the studio to record their full-length debut. The album, titled Heavy Metal Music, was produced entirely by the band and released on August 6, 2013. Spanning 11 tracks—including re-recorded versions of EP cuts like "Soldierhead" alongside new songs such as "Heroic Dose" and "Nocturnus"—it emphasized straightforward, riff-driven heavy metal with nods to Newsted's thrash roots. The release achieved commercial success, debuting at No. 40 on the US Billboard 200 chart and reaching No. 12 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart, reflecting strong initial interest from metal audiences.[16][17][18] To support live performances, the band expanded their lineup in early 2013 by adding second guitarist Mike Mushok, known from Staind, who brought additional rhythmic depth and stage presence. With this quartet configuration, Newsted launched their first tour in April 2013, headlining clubs across North America before securing support slots on major packages like Gigantour alongside acts such as Megadeth. The itinerary extended into Europe for festival appearances at events like Sonisphere and Graspop Metal Meeting, solidifying their rising profile through energetic sets that highlighted material from both the EP and album.[19][20][21]Disbandment (2014)
In early 2014, following the band's extensive touring in support of their 2013 debut album Heavy Metal Music, Newsted announced an indefinite hiatus, citing a combination of business disputes and overwhelming personal commitments as primary factors. The decision came after the cancellation of their planned Australian appearances at the Soundwave Festival in February 2014, where promoter AJ Maddah failed to deliver on promised main stage slots and adequate support, leading to logistical chaos and financial losses for the self-funded project. Additionally, the band's manager departed to work with Florida Georgia Line, exacerbating operational instability and leaving Jason Newsted to shoulder the full burden of operations.[22][23] The band's final performance occurred on August 11, 2013, at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre in Toronto, Ontario, as part of the Gigantour, marking the end of their live activities without any scheduled return at the time. Although Newsted had completed demos for a second album upon returning from the tour in mid-August 2013, no further releases were planned or produced, as priorities shifted dramatically in the spring of 2014.[24][22] In a 2016 interview, Newsted confirmed the project's official shutdown, attributing it to unresolved management issues and the unsustainable financial toll, which amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars for touring across 22 countries. The disbandment allowed Newsted to redirect his energies toward personal artistic pursuits, including acoustic performances and the establishment of Chophouse Records, while grappling with his mother's illness, which further influenced his withdrawal from the heavy metal scene.[3][22]Reactivation (2023–present)
On April 18, 2023, Jason Newsted announced the reactivation of his band Newsted via social media, marking the group's return after nearly a decade of inactivity following their 2014 disbandment. The announcement highlighted a one-off performance scheduled for May 20, 2023, at Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut album Heavy Metal Music. This revival was motivated by Newsted's renewed passion for live performance, stemming from a casual jam session with bandmates the previous year, and a desire to honor the "brotherhood" and nostalgia of the project after his retirement from extensive touring due to physical tolls in 2014.[4][25] The reactivated lineup retained the core trio of Newsted on lead vocals and bass, Jessie Farnsworth on guitar and backing vocals, and Jesus Mendez Jr. on drums, but featured a change with Mike Mushok replaced by Venezuelan guitarist Humberto Perez, who brought fresh energy to the quartet. The May 20 show drew a sold-out crowd and lasted over two hours, featuring a 20-song setlist that blended classics from Heavy Metal Music such as "Soldierhead" and "Heroic Dose" with 11 world-premiere original songs including "Burn the Scarecrow," "Heart of Stone," and "Black Sheep Trawler," which ranged from thrash-infused riffs to bluesy grooves. The performance also included covers like Metallica's "Whiplash," Motörhead's "(We Are) The Roadcrew" and "Love Me Like a Reptile," Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold," and the Ramones' "I Just Want to Have Something to Do," emphasizing the band's raw, authentic heavy metal roots without modern production cheats.[25][26][27] No further full-band tours or extensive U.S. dates materialized in 2023, aligning with Newsted's initial framing of the reunion as a fun, low-pressure endeavor rather than a full comeback. As of November 2025, the band maintains a sporadic activity level but has not conducted further live shows since the May 2023 performance, with Newsted focusing on acoustic performances under his Chophouse Band moniker. No new studio releases or albums have been announced, prioritizing selective heavy metal revival performances over consistent recording. Planned 2025 events, such as benefits at the Everson Museum of Art, were postponed, underscoring the project's emphasis on meaningful, intermittent engagements.[5][25][28]Band members
Current members
Newsted's current lineup, reformed in 2023 after a decade-long hiatus, features founder Jason Newsted on bass and lead vocals, alongside original members Jessie Farnsworth on guitar and Jesus Mendez Jr. on drums, with Humberto Perez joining as second guitarist to enhance the band's live dynamics.[4][1][29] Jason Newsted serves as the band's driving force, handling bass duties, lead vocals, and acting as the primary songwriter, drawing on his extensive experience from prior groups like Metallica to shape the reactivated project's heavy metal sound.[4][1] Since the 2023 reactivation, Newsted has led the group through its return to the stage, including the band's first performance in ten years at Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on May 20, 2023.[29][25] Jessie Farnsworth, an original member since the band's formation in 2012, contributes rhythm and lead guitar, providing continuity in the group's aggressive riffing style during the reactivation era.[30][31] Farnsworth's tenure spans the band's entire history, including its initial run and the 2023 revival shows.[1] Jesus Mendez Jr., also an original member from 2012, anchors the rhythm section on drums, delivering the powerhouse percussion that underpins Newsted's metal intensity.[30][29] His consistent presence has been key to maintaining the band's foundational groove since reactivation.[31] Humberto Perez joined as guitarist in 2023, adding dual-guitar layers that expand the live arrangements and contribute to the reactivated band's fuller sonic presence.[32][33] Perez's addition has supported performances like the 2023 reunion gig and ongoing activities into 2025.[5] All members have been active with the band since the 2023 reactivation, with Farnsworth and Mendez Jr. holding their positions from the group's inception.[1][5]Former members
Mike Mushok served as the guitarist for Newsted from March 2013 until the band's initial disbandment in 2014.[19] He joined the lineup during a period of heightened activity following the release of the band's debut EP, Metal, contributing significantly to the full-length album Heavy Metal Music, which was released in August 2013.[34] Mushok's guitar work featured prominently on the record, blending heavy riffs with the band's aggressive metal sound, and he participated in extensive touring that year, including U.S. club dates and international shows across multiple countries.[35] Mushok remained with Newsted through their final performances. His departure coincided with the project's shutdown later that year, primarily due to substantial financial losses incurred by frontman Jason Newsted, who personally funded operations and tours, including a costly European leg that strained resources despite creative success.[36] No other major personnel changes were reported during this period beyond the collective exit tied to the disbandment.Musical style and influences
Musical style
Newsted's music is firmly rooted in heavy metal, incorporating elements of thrash metal and hard rock, as evidenced by the aggressive riffs and propulsive rhythms that define their debut album Heavy Metal Music (2013).[37][38] The band's sound features powerful, gruff vocals delivered by bassist Jason Newsted in a style blending punk aggression with influences reminiscent of Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister, paired with muscular grooves and hypnotic mid-tempo structures that evoke stoner and sludge metal on tracks like "Heroic Dose."[37] Drumming by Jesus Mendez Jr. contributes fast-paced, thunderous percussion that drives the intensity, while guitarists Jessie Farnsworth and Mike Mushok layer in rhythmic trickery and dissonance for added depth.[38][39] A key signature of Newsted's style is its bass-driven grooves, highlighted by Newsted's multi-layered bass tones that anchor the compositions without overpowering the guitar work, creating a balanced yet raw aesthetic.[40] The band, self-produced by Newsted with mixing by Mike Fraser, embraces a deliberate avoidance of over-polished production, favoring a vital, thunderous quality that honors classic metal's grit over modern sheen.[41] Anthemic choruses, such as those in "Soldierhead," provide memorable hooks that amplify the music's headbanging appeal, blending straightforward heaviness with occasional bluesy undertones.[39][38] The band's early releases in 2013 emphasized a revival of classic metal sounds, drawing on thrash's fury and hard rock's stomp to craft anthemic, riff-centric songs that feel both nostalgic and immediate.[39] By their 2023 reactivation, as of that year, live performances introduced evolution through improvisation in newly debuted tracks—premiering 11 new songs ranging from thrash-laden assaults to bluesy grooves—alongside covers of influences like Metallica and Motörhead that expanded the setlists' dynamic range.[26] Critics often compare Newsted's output to Metallica's early thrash era's fury and the mid-paced heaviness of their later albums like the Black Album, but note a more straightforward edge without the progressive complexity.[37] This draws briefly from influences like Black Sabbath's thud and Voivod's quirks, shaping a sound that's unpretentious yet electrifying for metal enthusiasts.[38] The band has continued live performances into 2025 without major changes to their core style.[5]Influences
Newsted's music draws heavily from classic heavy metal pioneers, particularly Black Sabbath, Motörhead, and Iron Maiden, which inform the band's riff-driven aggression and high-energy delivery. Jason Newsted has explicitly cited these acts as shaping the sound of the band's debut EP Metal, noting that tracks like "Soldierhead" evoke Motörhead's raw speed and "Futureality" channels Black Sabbath's brooding heaviness.[42][43] Iron Maiden's influence appears in the galloping rhythms and epic structures, as Newsted has praised their role in proving metal's viability as a sustainable genre.[44] These foundational elements emphasize straightforward, powerful songwriting over complexity, reflecting the band's commitment to metal's origins. Jason Newsted's personal background further anchors Newsted in thrash metal traditions, stemming from his time with Flotsam and Jetsam and Metallica, where he honed a DIY ethos centered on relentless live performances and fan connection. His experiences in these bands instilled a focus on intensity and authenticity, which he carries into Newsted by prioritizing music that "takes it to the people" without compromise.[44][43] This thrash-derived approach manifests in the band's unpolished vigor, echoing the underground spirit of 1980s metal scenes that valued raw execution over polished production. Contributions from other members expand the band's palette with 1980s metal and hard rock inspirations. Guitarist Jessie Farnsworth, influenced by his father's collection featuring Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, UFO, Black Sabbath, and AC/DC, brings melodic hooks and groove elements drawn from that era's hard rock edge.[45] Drummer Jesus Mendez Jr., who rose through the Metallica crew circuit, adds a solid, groove-oriented backbone inspired by the same 1980s metal milieu, enhancing the band's rhythmic drive without diluting its heaviness.[46] The band's overarching philosophy rejects contemporary metal trends in favor of "pure heavy metal music," a stance articulated through album titles like Heavy Metal Music and Newsted's interviews emphasizing unapologetic, traditional metal over experimentation.[47][43] This ethos prioritizes loyalty to metal's roots, fostering a sound that celebrates aggression, melody, and community over commercial innovation.Discography
Studio albums
Newsted's sole studio album, Heavy Metal Music, was released on August 6, 2013, via Chophouse Records in North America and Spinefarm Records in Europe.[48] The 11-track record marked the band's full-length debut following their EP Metal, showcasing Jason Newsted's vision for a return to classic heavy metal roots with aggressive riffs, powerful vocals, and prominent bass lines. Tracks like the title song "Heavy Metal Music" and "Soldierhead" exemplify the album's high-energy, thrash-influenced sound, drawing on Newsted's extensive experience from his time in Metallica.[49] The album features the following track listing:- Heroic Dose

- ...As the Crow Flies
