Nuzzle and Scratch is a British children's television programme, shown on CBeebies from 1 September 2008, that ran for three series with two spin offs up to 4 March 2011. The show also aired on the international CBeebies channels in Poland and Australia. They showed two spin offs, Hoof And Safety, and Frock And Roll. The show aired on CBeebies in the UK.[1]
It stars two eponymous puppet alpacas created and developed by Barry Quinn and Alan Robinson and written by various writers.[2]
Information
[edit]The show starts with a beautiful scene of the Andes which is where Nuzzle and Scratch are originally from: (We're alpacas from the Andes, we've got hooves instead of handies) Each episode follows the same format, Nuzzle and Scratch work for '2 by 2, The Any Animal Agency'. run by The Boss, a tough-talking girl. She receives a phone call from someone who is in desperate need of some assistance. Unfortunately all her hard working animals are out already and the only free hands (or hooves) available are the two alpacas Nuzzle and Scratch. The Boss knows they aren't any good so is reluctant to send them, but there is usually some misunderstanding over the phone and they end up getting the job. Nuzzle and Scratch mess up and the person rings the Boss to complain. She convinces them to 'give them another chance' and Nuzzle and Scratch normally turn things around and really impress the person who hired them. They often win a rosette or get offered a permanent job but refuse leading them to go on their next assignment.[3]
Nuzzle and Scratch like to climb mountains and will go up anything that looks like a mountain e.g. piles of clothes. However, Nuzzle is scared of heights and when he climbs to the top he gets scared and Scratch has to save him.
Alpacas like to herd. When Nuzzle and Scratch see a lot of things, or if they get scared, they say 'herd up' and begin herding.
At some point in the episode, someone will say that they need to 'start from Scratch'. Nuzzle gets upset about this and asks why can't they start from Nuzzle. Usually the person is very confused but agrees to 'start from Nuzzle' instead. In the painting and decorating episode, Scratch complains that they always 'start from Nuzzle', and they actually do 'start from Scratch'.
Nuzzle and Scratch have some catchphrases:- 'Is it snack time yet?', 'No job's too easy', 'Working can be fun'.
Both Nuzzle and Scratch are completely distinct in thoughts and are actually opposites of each other:
Nuzzle is neat, quiet, shy, nervous, and cautious.
Scratch is silly, loud, friendly, energetic, and optimistic.

Premise
Nuzzle and Scratch is a British children's puppet comedy series centered on two alpaca protagonists who operate out of the Two by Two job agency for animals, where they are assigned a variety of temporary roles by their employer, known as The Boss.[1] Their adventures span diverse everyday environments such as schools, parks, and workplaces.[2] Despite their well-meaning intentions, Nuzzle and Scratch frequently bungle their assignments, leading to chaotic mishaps that highlight their incompetence, only for them to ultimately redeem themselves and resolve the situations positively.[1] The core themes of the series emphasize learning from errors, the value of teamwork between the duo, and finding enjoyment in routine work, all delivered through lighthearted humor suitable for young audiences.[1] Episodes typically follow a structure where the alpacas receive a new job brief, embark on their task with enthusiasm but poor execution, encounter escalating comedic problems, and conclude with a successful turnaround, often incorporating collaborative efforts to fix the chaos.[1] This narrative arc reinforces positive messages about perseverance and cooperation without delving into complex conflicts.[1] Each installment runs approximately 20 minutes and employs puppetry to bring the animal characters to life, blending physical comedy with occasional musical elements to engage preschool viewers in the humorous exploration of job-related antics.[2] The format prioritizes fun and resolution, ensuring every story ends on an uplifting note that celebrates the protagonists' growth through their shared experiences.[1]Production
Nuzzle and Scratch was created by Barry Quinn and Alan Robinson, who developed the concept of two alpaca puppets navigating various jobs for a children's audience.[2] The series was produced by the BBC specifically for the CBeebies channel, targeting preschool viewers with a blend of humor and learning.[12] The production utilized puppetry techniques, featuring live-action elements alongside the puppet alpacas to create engaging scenarios in everyday work environments. Puppetry was performed by Neil Sterenberg as Nuzzle and Dave Chapman as Scratch.[13] Directors Jack Jameson and Anna Perowne oversaw multiple episodes, ensuring the visual storytelling aligned with the show's comedic and educational tone.[5][12] Writing duties were handled by a team of contributors, including Barry Quinn, Mat Lyons, Karen Ward, Adrian Poynton, and Robbie Sims, who crafted scripts emphasizing mishaps in professional settings to teach basic concepts.[14] Music played a key role, with original songs and a theme tune composed to reinforce episode themes and enhance memorability for young audiences.[15] Developed as educational entertainment, the series focused on preschoolers by highlighting job-related skills and safety practices through the characters' comedic failures, promoting awareness without direct instruction.[16] Filming took place in UK studios between 2008 and 2011 across three series, incorporating occasional location shoots to depict diverse workplaces authentically.[17]Characters
Main characters
Nuzzle is a white alpaca puppet character who serves as one half of the titular duo, typically acting as the more neat and cautious member, often trying to keep situations under control as the voice of reason. He is performed and voiced by Neil Sterenberg.[4] Scratch is the brown alpaca counterpart to Nuzzle, characterized by his silly and optimistic nature, which frequently leads to enthusiastic mishaps and comedic errors during their assignments. He is performed and voiced by Dave Chapman.[4] The Boss is the strict young girl who owns and runs the Two by Two animal job agency, assigning various temporary jobs to Nuzzle and Scratch while providing comic authority and occasional exasperation at their incompetence. She is voiced by Eve De Leon Allen.[4][18]Supporting characters
Notable one-off guest characters include Bob Sheen, a window cleaner voiced by Angus Kennedy, who features in the episode where Nuzzle and Scratch assist with cleaning tasks, leading to humorous spills and splashes. Another guest is Terry Towling, a lifeguard voiced by Ortis Deley, appearing in a swimming pool episode focused on preparing for a gala, where the duo's help results in watery disruptions.[19] Additional guests, such as Mr. Squeaky voiced by Nick Wilton, portray various tradespeople whose brief roles underscore the show's theme of job-related blunders through interactions that escalate the alpacas' errors.[19]Broadcast
Airing history
Nuzzle and Scratch premiered on the CBeebies channel on 1 September 2008, marking the start of its run as a puppet-based comedy drama aimed at preschool children.[2] The first series consisted of 20 episodes, which aired daily from Monday to Friday during the channel's afternoon schedule, concluding later that month.[20] This format allowed for consistent viewing opportunities within CBeebies' educational programming block, which focuses on entertaining and informative content for young audiences. The second series, subtitled Hoof and Safety with Nuzzle and Scratch, began airing on 1 March 2010 and comprised 13 episodes broadcast over approximately three weeks, skipping Wednesdays to align with the channel's rhythm.[21] It ended on 22 March 2010, maintaining the daily preschool slot to reinforce safety-themed lessons.[22] The third and final series: Frock 'n' Roll returned in early 2011 with another 20 episodes, airing in the same daily format and concluding on 4 March 2011.[23] Across all three series, a total of 53 episodes were produced, emphasizing job-related adventures and learning opportunities.[24] Reruns of the programme, including episodes from the second series, continued on CBeebies until at least 2015, supporting ongoing access for its target demographic.[25] No major specials or holiday editions were produced during or after the original run.[26]International distribution
Nuzzle and Scratch was distributed internationally through CBeebies channels and local broadcasters, with adaptations including dubbing to accommodate non-English speaking audiences. In Poland, the series premiered on CBeebies Poland in 2010, where it was dubbed into Polish under the title Nosal i Skrob and aired on additional channels targeting young children.[27] The show found a foothold in Australia, broadcasting on ABC Kids beginning in 2009 as part of the CBeebies block on ABC2; select episodes have since been made available on Australian streaming platforms like ABC iView.[28] Distribution remained limited in other regions, such as New Zealand via CBeebies and select European markets through localized CBeebies feeds, though it did not achieve widespread adoption. Unlike these areas, there was no major release in the United States, with only minor or unconfirmed airings reported on preschool blocks.[26] Home media releases supported international accessibility, including DVD compilations in the UK such as the Series 1 box set issued in 2009 by BBC Worldwide, and similar editions distributed in Australia through local retailers.[29] These physical formats allowed fans outside the UK to access full seasons without relying on broadcast schedules.Episodes
Series overview
Nuzzle and Scratch aired for three series on CBeebies between 2008 and 2011, with the program evolving from simple comedic mishaps to more structured lessons in safety and collaboration across its 55 episodes. The first series, launched on 1 September 2008, comprised 20 episodes that introduced the alpaca protagonists' work at the Two by Two Employment Agency through basic jobs like window cleaning and hairdressing, centering on their endearing incompetence and the resulting chaos.[20][30][1] The second series, broadcast in 2010, featured a run of 13 episodes and focused on safety lessons in everyday hazards, such as fire and road safety, while refining the puppetry techniques for smoother performances and incorporating themes of caution.[21][22][31] The third series in 2011, consisting of 22 episodes, emphasized dress-up and role-playing in costumes for various jobs and mysteries, building upon lessons from prior seasons with an increased number of songs to reinforce concepts of coordination and group effort.[32][33][34] Throughout the series, there is no continuous narrative arc, but rather episodic development that progressively highlights the importance of safety practices and teamwork in resolving the duo's job-related blunders.[1]Series 1 (2008)

Spin-offs
Hoof and Safety
Hoof and Safety with Nuzzle and Scratch is a British children's television spin-off series derived from the original Nuzzle and Scratch programme. It premiered on CBeebies on 1 March 2010 and consisted of 13 episodes, airing weekdays (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday) until 22 March 2010. The series was hosted by Miss Mulberry, the safety supervisor from the main show, who guides the alpaca duo Nuzzle and Scratch through practical safety training sessions.[8] The premise centers on educating young viewers about everyday safety hazards using a structured, standalone format distinct from the main series' employment-themed narratives. Episodes incorporate live-action puppetry, animated "hoovies" (instructional videos), and catchy songs to reinforce lessons on topics such as fire prevention, personal hygiene, and water safety. Nuzzle and Scratch's appearances provide continuity with the parent show, but the focus remains on Miss Mulberry's authoritative delivery of safety rules through scenarios, drills, and demonstrations.[39][8]Episode List
