Sebastian Marka (born 1978 in Geneva, Switzerland) is a German film director and editor.

Key Information

Life and work

[edit]

Sebastian Marka was born in Geneva in 1978 and grew up in Königsbach-Stein near Karlsruhe. Marka began studying at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in 2001 and graduated in 2005 with a degree in Film & Media.[1]

While still a student, Marka began working as a film editor. He edited commercials, short- and feature films. After graduating, he continued his editing work and was responsible for editing several Television productions such as Unschuldig or 100 Code, an internationally co-produced Swedish crime drama series.

In 2010 Marka's short film - thriller Interview[2] was released, for which he received many awards at German and international film festivals.

Due to the success of his short film Interview he received his first directing assignments. After directing five episodes of the German TV series Notruf Hafenkante, Marka subsequently shot ten 90-minute episodes of the popular German police crime drama series Tatort since 2013, three of which he edited himself.

The award-winning three Tatort-episodes Long Live Death (Tatort: Es lebe der Tod), Tatort: Die Wahrheit, Tatort: Meta, and four other episodes were created in collaboration with Erol Yesilkaya. He wrote the screenplays for all seven episodes. Marka had met Yesilkaya in 2012 and worked with him frequently until then.

In an interview with the German trade magazine Blickpunkt:Film, Marka compares their cooperation to the "showrunner principle". During the process of making a film, from idea development to film editing, Yesilkaya and Marka would be in constant exchange of information to achieve a good result.[3]

On October 20, 2020, Marka's dystopian TV - Science fiction film Exit was broadcast on the nationwide German television channel Das Erste. Yesilkaya again wrote the screenplay for the film, which is set in the year 2047 and addresses the dimension and impact of artificial intelligence and digital life. The German film critic Arno Frank of Spiegel Online said, that a "perfectly formed dystopia like "Exit" [...] has not yet been seen on public television" in Germany. (Eine formvollendete Dystopie wie "Exit" [...] hat man bei den Öffentlich-Rechtlichen noch nicht gesehen.)[4]

Marka and Yesilkaya also filmed the German fantasy novel The Gryphon (Der Greif, 1989) by Wolfgang Hohlbein as television series for Amazon Prime Video. Here, Marka was showrunner alongside Yesilkaya and directed four episodes. The Gryphon was released on Amazon Prime on May 25, 2023.[5]

Reception

[edit]

The released Tatort-episodes by Marka were almost all praised by the German press and received good IMDb ratings.

For example, the German film critic Rainer Tittelbach wrote in October 2018, that Marka had created "exceptional crime films" (Ausnahmekrimis).[6]

Spiegel Online - critic Christian Buß also wrote in a 2018 Tatort - review, that Marka had "repeatedly artfully widened the format of the series with cinematic 'Tatort-episodes' such as the Berlin episode 'Meta' or the 'Se7en' variation" for the Frankfurt Tatort edition (hat mit cineastischen "Tatorten" wie der Berliner Folge "Meta" oder der "Se7en"-Variation [...] immer wieder kunstvoll das Format der Reihe geweitet).[7]

In addition, some of the Tatort - episodes won national and international awards. For example, the episode Long Live Death celebrated its international premiere at the Austin Film Festival in 2016. And Marka won an audience award for it at the Nashville Film Festival in 2017 and received a jury award at the Garden State Film Festival in 2017.

For the Tatort-episode Die Wahrheit Marka and screenwriter Erol Yesilkaya were nominated for the prestigious Grimme Award in 2017. They received the Grimme Award in 2019 for their Tatort-episode Meta.

Early life and education

Early life

Sebastian Marka was born in 1978 in Geneva, Switzerland. He grew up in Königsbach-Stein, a town near Karlsruhe in Germany.

Education

Sebastian Marka began his studies in film and media at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in 2000. He completed his education there in 2005, graduating with a diploma in cinematography (Bereich Kamera).

Career

Early career as editor

Sebastian Marka initially pursued a career as a film and television editor after studying cinematography at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in Germany. His earliest known editing credits date to his student years, beginning as early as 2001 with work on short films. During the early 2000s, he edited a variety of short films, feature projects, and television productions, including the feature film Der Ärgermacher in 2003, the TV movie Zores in 2006, and the feature Parkour in 2009. He also edited the segment "Uwe" in the 2008 anthology film 1. Mai. Marka gained significant experience in episodic television by editing five episodes of the series Unschuldig between 2008 and 2009. He later edited three episodes of the series 100 Code in 2015. This foundational work as an editor in the 2000s built his technical expertise in post-production and prepared him for his eventual transition to directing.

Breakthrough as director

Sebastian Marka's breakthrough as a director came with his debut short film Interview (2010), a tense thriller that he directed and edited himself. The 20-minute one-room drama centers on a journalist interviewing a suspected serial killer, featuring performances by Stephan Grossmann and Florian Panzner. The film garnered significant international recognition, marking his shift from primarily editing to directing. Interview won multiple awards at film festivals worldwide, including Mejor Director Cortometraje at Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre (2010) and Best Short Film at Oaxaca FilmFest (2010). Additional accolades included Best International Short Film at Foster International Film Festival Australia (2010), Best Short Film at exground film festival Wiesbaden (2011), and Best Short Thriller at Pentedattilo Film Festival (2012). These honors highlighted Marka's skill in building suspense within confined settings and established his reputation in the short film circuit. Building on this momentum, Marka transitioned to television directing with five episodes of the long-running ZDF series Notruf Hafenkante between 2013 and 2015. This work represented his initial foray into episodic television and laid the groundwork for his later contributions to German crime drama. Around 2012, he also began collaborating with screenwriter Erol Yesilkaya, a partnership that would become significant in his subsequent projects.

Work on Tatort

Sebastian Marka directed ten episodes of the German crime anthology series Tatort between 2015 and 2021. He frequently collaborated with screenwriter Erol Yesilkaya on seven of these episodes, including Das Haus am Ende der Straße (2015), Die Wahrheit (2016), Es lebe der Tod (2016), Meta (2018), Ein Tag wie jeder andere (2019), Parasomnia (2020), and Pavlovs Köter (2021). Marka also edited several of his own directed episodes, such as Meta (2018), KI (2018), and Ein Tag wie jeder andere (2019). His work on the series has been praised for its cinematic quality and ability to expand the traditional Tatort format through sophisticated visual storytelling and genre elements. In particular, the episode Es lebe der Tod (2016) drew comparisons to David Fincher's Se7en, with critic Christian Buß describing it as "like Se7en – only better" due to its masterful staging of psychological tension, atmospheric dread, and condensed genre mechanics that left viewers profoundly disturbed. Marka's episodes, especially those co-created with Yesilkaya, have been noted for generating an "unstoppable mechanics of horror" within the constraints of television crime drama, establishing him as a director who brings feature-film ambition to the long-running series.

Other directing projects

Sebastian Marka has directed several standalone television films separate from his extensive work on the long-running crime series Tatort. In 2017, he directed the TV movie Hit Mom – Mörderische Weihnachten. In 2020, he directed Exit, a dystopian science fiction television film broadcast on the German public broadcaster Das Erste, with a screenplay by Erol Yesilkaya.

Showrunning and production company

In 2021, Sebastian Marka co-founded the fiction production company Dog Haus alongside screenwriter Erol Yesilkaya and producer André Zoch. Launched in July 2021 and based in Berlin and Munich, the company specializes in premium television and film projects, with a focus on elevated genre content that bridges arthouse sensibilities and suspenseful entertainment, drawing on the founders' expertise in high-end fantasy fiction and crime series. The trio's long-term collaboration predates the company, encompassing numerous crime dramas such as episodes of Tatort for ARD and the acclaimed series Exit. Dog Haus positions itself as a production label for creatives committed to exceptional, thematically relevant stories with the highest artistic standards. In February 2024, Spark Studios (part of Newen Studios) acquired a majority stake in the company to support its development within a broader European producers network. Marka has expanded into showrunning and producing roles through Dog Haus's inaugural major project, serving as co-showrunner, creator, and producer on the Amazon Prime Video fantasy series The Gryphon (Der Greif), which premiered in 2023 as an adaptation of Wolfgang Hohlbein's novel and was produced in collaboration with W&B Television. He also directed four episodes of the series.
