Sevenus (세븐어스; stylized as SEVENUS) is a South Korean duo consisting of vocalists Heejae and Ireah under PCS Entertainment. Formed after the duo gained widespread recognition as runners-up on JTBC's 2023 survival program , Sevenus debuted on July 31, 2023, with their first Summús, marking their transition from former boy group MASC to a renewed focus on and emotional ballads. Heejae and Ireah first rose to prominence as members of MASC (short for "masculine"), a four-member boy group under JJ Holic Media that debuted in August 2016 with the extended play Strange. After MASC's activities halted in 2020 amid member changes and internal challenges, the duo reunited for Peak Time under the temporary name "Team 07:00," performing reimagined versions of their past tracks and securing second place, which revitalized their careers and led to their signing with PCS Entertainment. Their group name "Sevenus" derives from "07:00," symbolizing their Peak Time team number and a fresh start at "dawn." The duo's members are Kim Hee-jae (born February 22, 1994), who serves as the main vocalist and dancer, and Lee So-won (stage name Ireah, born March 25, 1994), the , , and maknae. Known for their synchronized vocals and chemistry honed from years in MASC, they have no fixed leader, instead rotating the role quarterly to promote balance. Their is called HEEALA, meaning "shining fans with wings," reflecting the duo's aspirational themes in music. Sevenus has emphasized personal growth and fan connection in interviews, with Heejae also branching into , debuting in the play Love You, Mom in 2024. Since debuting, Sevenus has released a series of projects showcasing their versatile sound, blending R&B-infused ballads and upbeat tracks. Their discography includes the debut single Summús (2023), the digital single MIRROR (December 2023), the first mini-album Spring Canvas (March 2024) featuring the hit "Want You Back," the second EP Stay Tuned (December 2024) with title track "SLOMO," the single "Can I Love You" (May 2025), and their upcoming third mini-album White Fall (November 25, 2025), which explores introspective autumn themes. Notable achievements include "Want You Back" surpassing 1 million views shortly after release and ranking high on domestic charts, alongside their first solo concert On Air Night with HEEALA in February 2025 and international fan meetings. Looking ahead, the duo aims to expand globally with performances in various countries and continued releases to solidify their presence in the landscape.

Background

Formation and concept

MASC was formed in 2016 by the entertainment agencies JJ Holic Media and Lotus E&M as a four-member boy group, debuting on with the mini-album Strange. The group's name is an for "masculine," reflecting their intended image as a strong, charismatic ensemble in the K-hip-hop idol space. The original lineup consisted of leader and main vocalist Woosoo, dancer 26 (pronounced Yi Ryuk), rapper ACE, and vocalist Heejae, who were assembled through the agencies' scouting and training efforts prior to debut. Their concept centered on a bold, manly aesthetic, blending hip-hop rhythms with energetic performances to convey power and confidence. Early promotional strategies involved sequential member teasers released in the weeks leading to debut, starting with image and video reveals to build anticipation for their hip-hop-oriented sound. In 2017, the group expanded with new additions, including Ireah, amid shifts in agency structure as JJ Holic Media transitioned toward broader operations under its evolving management. This initial phase laid the groundwork for MASC's identity before their eventual reformation as the duo Sevenus in 2023.

Name and branding

Sevenus, originally known as MASC, derived its debut name from the English word "masculine," symbolizing the group's intended tough and edgy image as a four-member under JJ Holic Media and Lotus E&M. The name MASC was stylized in all uppercase letters, with the Korean equivalent 마스크, emphasizing a bold and masculine aesthetic in their early promotions and album artwork from 2016. Following their appearance on the 2023 survival program as Team 07:00, the duo of Heejae and Ireah rebranded to Sevenus upon signing with PCS Entertainment. The new name SEVENUS combines "seven," referencing their team number 07:00 (evoking 7 o'clock), with "us" to signify unity and a promise of ongoing connection with fans. This rebranding marked a shift toward themes of renewal and togetherness, officially stylized as SEVENUS in all promotional materials starting May 2023. Post-reformation visual branding evolved to incorporate warmer, more inviting elements compared to MASC's darker motifs. For instance, their 2023 single "Summus" and subsequent releases featured updated logos with sleek, modern typography, while teasers for the 2023 winter track "MIRROR" introduced a soft pastel pink color palette to convey seasonal warmth and accessibility. In 2023, PCS Entertainment also established the official fan club name as HEEALA (희아라 / 熙ALA), derived from the shared syllable "Hee" in the members' names and symbolizing "shining fans who will fly up together" with the group, further reinforcing the unity motif in marketing campaigns.

History

2016–2020: MASC debut, activities, and disbandment

MASC debuted as a four-member boy group under JJ Holic Media on August 19, 2016, releasing their first mini album Strange along with the of the same name, which featured a bluesy rock sound and synchronized choreography. The original lineup consisted of leader Woosoo, 26, A.C.E, and Heejae, positioning the group as a masculine-leaning act in the competitive landscape. Following their debut, MASC continued activities with the release of their first single album Tina on February 4, 2017, an upbeat rock track that highlighted member A.C.E's lyrical contributions and marked a shift toward more vibrant energy compared to their initial release. In September 2017, the group expanded significantly by adding four new members—Chibin, Doeun, Ireah, and Moonbong—bringing the total to eight members ahead of their next comeback. This restructuring aimed to refresh the group's dynamic, leading to the October 12, 2017, release of their second single Do It, a colorful and fun track performed by the full octet. The expanded group pursued international promotion, embarking on a Southeast Asia promo tour in late 2018 and early 2019, including showcases in Malaysia and Cambodia where they performed hits like "Strange," "Tina," and "Do It" and interacted with fans through meet-and-greet events. However, challenges emerged in July 2018 when member A.C.E was accused of physically assaulting newer member Chibin during an argument, resulting in A.C.E's immediate departure from the group and Chibin's departure following recovery; 26 and Doeun also left around the same time amid the fallout. These internal conflicts, compounded by agency financial difficulties, led to an extended hiatus, with the remaining members—Woosoo, Heejae, Ireah, and Moonbong—releasing sporadic content like the 2019 single Maschera before activities stalled. On October 18, 2020, MASC announced their disbandment via a heartfelt video message on their official YouTube channel, citing the expiration of members' contracts and unresolved internal issues as key factors after four years of promotions. The final activities included the farewell statement, where the remaining members expressed gratitude to fans and outlined plans for individual pursuits, marking the end of the group's original run without a dedicated farewell single.

2023–2025: Peak Time appearance, reformation, and major releases

In early 2023, members Heejae and Ireah from the disbanded group MASC participated in JTBC's survival program as Team 07:00, performing reimagined versions of their previous tracks and original songs that showcased their and stage presence. The duo advanced through the competition, ultimately securing second place in the finale, which sparked significant fan support and calls for their official as a permanent act. Following their strong performance on Peak Time, Sevenus officially reformed as a duo under PCS Entertainment and debuted on July 31, 2023, with the single album Summús, led by the title track "Wonder Land," an upbeat pop track emphasizing their refreshed dynamic. This release marked their transition from survival show contestants to established artists, building on the exposure from the program to establish a new fanbase. In December 2023, they followed up with the digital single "MIRROR," further showcasing their vocal synergy. In 2024, Sevenus continued their momentum with the release of their first mini album Spring Canvas on March 18, followed by their second mini album Stay Tuned on December 9, reflecting a maturation in their sound with themes of growth and connection. The duo's Stay Tuned achieved commercial success, debuting at number 9 on the Circle Album Chart for the week of December 8–14, 2024, with over 11,000 copies sold in its first week. Key milestones during this period included their first solo concert On Air Night with HEEALA in February 2025 and international fan meetings across . In May 2025, they released the single "Can I Love You," expanding their discography with emotive tracks. Looking ahead to late 2025, Sevenus announced their third mini album White Fall, scheduled for release on November 25, 2025, which promises to explore seasonal motifs in their evolving artistry. Their first fanmeeting tour in titled 7DAYS in August 2025 highlighted their growing international appeal through interactive performances and fan engagements across multiple cities. These activities, alongside promotions in , underscored the duo's expansion beyond Korea, with Stay Tuned contributing to broader recognition in global markets. Post-reformation, their musical style has shifted toward more emotive pop arrangements, incorporating subtle electronic elements to complement their vocal strengths.

Musical style and artistry

Genres and influences

Sevenus's music draws primarily from hip-hop, R&B, and pop genres, reflecting the broader landscape while evolving through their career phases. As MASC, the group emphasized hip-hop-influenced pop, characterized by midtempo beats, live-band percussion, and dramatic elements that lent a mature aura to tracks like their debut single "Strange." This style was shaped by influences from prominent Korean acts such as , whose rap flows and energetic delivery impacted MASC's sound, and Beast, evoking a similar blend of emotive choruses and structured melodies. Post-reformation in 2023 as a duo, Sevenus transitioned to more emotional ballad-pop hybrids and uplifting pop/rock, incorporating diverse genres that prioritize sincerity and introspection, as seen in their second EP Stay Tuned with tracks like "Be My World" and "Starlight." Their title track "Want You Back" exemplifies this shift through its sunny pop/rock vibe, featuring bright melodies and straightforward delivery that contrast the hip-hop edge of their earlier work. "Wonder Land," from their debut single album Summús, further highlights this maturity with its thematic focus on wonder and reflection, blending pop accessibility with subtle R&B vocal nuances. Influences from Western artists like Bruno Mars are evident in their vocal stylings, adding smooth, soulful layers to their duo dynamics, while Peak Time performances inform their group synergy and performance energy. This evolution continued in later releases, such as the 2025 single "Can I Love You," which blends R&B-infused pop with emotional elements, emphasizing and introspective lyrics consistent with their post-reformation sound.

Production and songwriting

Sevenus' production process is characterized by close collaboration between the duo and PCS Entertainment, with a strong emphasis on member-driven creativity in songwriting. Ireah has emerged as a key contributor, co-writing multiple tracks across their post-reformation . On the second EP Stay Tuned (2024), he received credits for lyrics and composition on "Be My World" (with Kit), "by" (with Jay Lee), "Starlight" (with Junji), "wish," and "COLD AND SHINY" (with ). These contributions highlight Ireah's role in shaping the album's introspective and emotive tone, drawing from the duo's experiences during their hiatus. Heejae, while primarily focused on vocals, has shown keen interest in expanding his involvement in songwriting. In a 2025 interview, he described writing as his favorite hobby and expressed aspirations to lead composition efforts in future projects, indicating a potential evolution in the duo's creative dynamic. The group's releases often feature partnerships with established external producers to refine their sound. For instance, "COLD AND SHINY" from Stay Tuned was produced by renowned composer , known for his work with acts like and Red Velvet, blending polished electronic elements with the duo's harmonious vocals. Similarly, "SLOMO" involved for composition and arrangement, contributing to the track's rhythmic, modern pop structure. Earlier, the 2023 single "Mirror" was composed by DEFENDER and Cleverboi, with lyrics by Woo Sung Jun, emphasizing a clean, atmospheric production suited to its themes of reflection and connection. This collaborative approach allows Sevenus to maintain artistic control while leveraging professional expertise under PCS Entertainment's oversight.

Featuring introspective lyrics centered on themes of self-reflection and personal growth, the track resonated with listeners exploring inner vulnerabilities. Additionally, the digital version of "Want You Back"—originally the title track from their 2024 mini album—garnered significant online traction, surpassing 5 million streams across major platforms within months of its standalone digital push.
