Founding of Kyivan Rus'

9th Century

The first major Eastern Slavonic state, Kievan Rus', was founded. This marked the beginning of a significant period in Ukrainian history.

Rurik Dynasty and Christianization

10th Century

The Rurik dynasty was established, and Prince Vladimir the Great accepted Orthodox Christianity in 988, beginning the conversion of Kievan Rus' and setting the course for Christianity in Eastern Europe.

Peak of Kyivan Rus'

11th Century

Under Yaroslav the Wise, Kievan Rus' reached its peak, with Kyiv becoming the chief political and cultural center of Eastern Europe.

Mongol Invasion

1237-40

The Mongols invaded the Rus principalities, destroying many cities and ending Kievan Rus' power. The Tatars established the Golden Horde empire.
