Ukrainian Independence Movements and World War I

This timeline covers the period of Ukrainian independence movements during the collapse of empires in World War I and the subsequent establishment of short-lived republics.
Central Rada and Ukrainian People’s Republic
1917
The Central Rada council was set up in Kyiv following the collapse of the Russian Empire, and the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UPR) was proclaimed.
West Ukrainian People’s Republic
1918
The West Ukrainian People’s Republic (WUPR) was established in western territories, centered in Lviv.
Unification Act
1919
The Unification Act (Act Zluky) was signed to unite the UPR and WUPR, but their independence was short-lived due to military conflicts.
Soviet-Ukrainian War
1921
Following the Soviet-Ukrainian War, Ukrainian lands were divided: the eastern territories became the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, while western Ukraine was absorbed by Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia.
