Varina is an incorporated small, rural village in Pocahontas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 68 at the time of the 2020 census.
Varina got its start in the year 1899, following construction of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway through that territory. It was named after Varina Farms, a plantation established by John Rolfe in Jamestown, Virginia.
Varina is located at 42°39′36″N 94°53′56″W / 42.66000°N 94.89889°W (42.659864, -94.898808).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.27 square miles (0.70 km2), all land.
As of the census of 2020, there were 68 people, 34 households, and 19 families residing in the city. The population density was 308.3 inhabitants per square mile (119.0/km2). There were 38 housing units at an average density of 172.3 per square mile (66.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 76.5% White, 0.0% Black or African American, 0.0% Native American, 0.0% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 13.2% from other races and 10.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino persons of any race comprised 17.6% of the population.
Of the 34 households, 44.1% of which had children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.4% were married couples living together, 11.8% were cohabitating couples, 26.5% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present and 29.4% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present. 44.1% of all households were non-families. 35.3% of all households were made up of individuals, 20.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
The median age in the city was 38.0 years. 33.8% of the residents were under the age of 20; 2.9% were between the ages of 20 and 24; 20.6% were from 25 and 44; 25.0% were from 45 and 64; and 17.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.0% male and 50.0% female.
At the 2010 census there were 71 people in 30 households, including 17 families, in the city. The population density was 263.0 inhabitants per square mile (101.5/km2). There were 35 housing units at an average density of 129.6 per square mile (50.0/km2). The racial makup of the city was 97.2% White and 2.8% African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.0%.
