Construction and service history

Building and launch

AIDAblu was ordered on July 1, 2006, as the fourth vessel in AIDA Cruises' expansion of its fleet with Sphinx-class ships built by Meyer Werft. This order followed announcements of prior ships in the series and supported AIDA's growth strategy under parent company Carnival Corporation. The contract was valued at approximately $420 million. Construction took place at Meyer Werft's shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, where the first steel was cut in January 2008. The keel was laid in October 2008, marking the formal start of assembly with 55 modular steel blocks joined using advanced laser welding techniques. The ship was launched on July 11, 2009, completing the primary build phase within the covered dock before subsequent outfitting. AIDAblu belongs to the Sphinx class, a series of six similar vessels designed for short-haul European cruising, with sister ships AIDAdiva, , , , and . The name "AIDAblu" had previously been applied to another ship operating from 2004 to 2007, which was later transferred to Ocean Village as Ocean Village 2.
